  • Thank You, Mr. Holst!

    Gustav Holst

    arranged by

    Lee Shook

    Young Band Festival Series

    Grade 2.5

  • About the Music

Arranger, Lee Shook, combines themes from Gustav Holst's 1st and 2nd Suites to create an exciting,

overture style composition for festival performance. Written at a grade 2.5 level, this composition is

playable by advanced level middle school and intermediate level high school bands. Key centers and

instrument ranges have been adjusted for young musicians without compromising the signature British

band sound that is characteristic of Holst's music. Students will find rehearsing and performing these

    famous melodies very rewarding.

Rehearsal suggestions. . . Beginning with the opening statement, all sections of this piece written inCut Time should be performed with a crisp, detatched style of articulation. Keep dotted quarter and eighth

notes separated and quarter notes shortened (staccato). The 6/8 section beginning at measure 47 should

have a light, dance-like feel. In contrast, the Andante section (meas. 100) should be rubato and very

connected. Take care to keep accompaniement voices balanced under the melody. Melody should

predominate throughout this piece. The restatement of the first march theme (meas. 153) follows Holst's

orignal scoring with the lower voices taking the countermelody. This melody should be played in a

marcato style and be balanced equally with the melody in the upper winds.
