Join this great cultural celebration originated from the Colombian Carib-bean coast. Become a “currambero” and enjoy an unforgettable party Barranquilla-style. We invite you to dance and enjoy with all your fam-ily in the 2nd Annual Barranquilla’s Carnival in Arizona.

Barranquilla, a land of colorful and joyful people. Its carnival, with more than a century of tradition has transcended borders as the most representative cultural celebration of Colombia.

The 2nd Annual Barranquilla’s Car-nival in Arizona pays homage to this colorful festivity filled with music and tradition on Sunday April 22nd from 4 to 10 PM. A celebration for the whole community that will be taking place in a spectacular venue, The Icehouse, a historic building located in Downtown Phoenix, setting the atmosphere for an unforgettable night. Produced by Ces’t Tout Entertai-mentand with the collaboration of Co-lombianos en Arizona, the 2nd Annual Barranquilla’s Carnival in Arizona pretends to preserve and showcase all of the culture, folklore and legacy that the Carnival encompasses.

“We want to present those attending The 2nd Annual Barranquilla’s Carnival in Arizona the best of an exceptional party. For that, we will be present-ing different exponents of the most representative genres of Colombian and tropical music as it is done on the famous Festival of Orchestras that takes place over the last two days of the Carnival in Barranquilla, and where musicians of different parts of the world compete for the grand prize calledCongo de Oro. That’s what we want to show the public, great-quality music.” Said Camilo Moreno who serves as Creative Director at Ces’t

Tout Entertaiment and is a member of the band Jaleo, who are widely-known in the Valley of the Sun. Moreno con-tinued saying that the most important objective was to preserve this celebra-tion for the generations to come. “The mission of this project that started three years ago, comes from the desire of a group of musicians to preserve the artistic legacy of the Carnival, and pass-on to our children the love for our culture. Our main goal is to become the official entity in charge of bring-ing this festivity to the whole nation including Arizona.”

However, the best will be the sur-prises, and there will be many at the musical level, but it won’t only be a day full of music and celebration, you can also delight your palate with tantalizing Colombian food. So do not let anyone tell you about it, and as they say in Barranquilla: ¡Quien lo vive esquien lo goza!

magic and splendor of a vacation in Greece without ever leaving the valley, complete with the sights, sounds and delicacies found in a far-away village.

Without a doubt the highlight of the three-day festival, is the delicious array of mouth watering time-honored delicacies that will satisfy any appetite. Weeks prior to the event, several dozen church volunteers work to hand-prepare favorite dishes such as Dolmathes (grapevine leaves stuffed with ground beef, seasoned rice and herbs), Spanakopita (thin filo dough filled with spinach and cheeses), souvlakia (shish-kabob), and Pastichio (Greek lasagna, baked macaroni and ground beef covered in béchamel sauce), and more. Home- made pastries like Baklava (filo dough filled with nuts and spices), Kourabiedes (a rich, shortbread-like cookies covered with

powdered sugar) Loukoumathes (pastry puffs sweetened with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon), are also available for snacking or to take home.

Greek music will fill the air, and performances by Greek Folk Dancers in authentic costumes promise to add to the atmosphere. For festival-goers who like to get involved, dance workshops. DANCE COMPANY CELEBRATES BRAZILIAN CULTURE

DanceBrazil Thursday, April 26, 2012, 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2012, 8 p.m. Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts

For 35 years, DanceBrazil has thrilled audiences across the United States and throughout the world with its dazzling artistry inspired by the cultural tapestry of Brazil. The New York-based company’s dancers and musicians perform a unique fusion of Afro-Brazilian movement, contempo-rary dance and Capoeira, the daring martial-arts dance that evolved in colonial Brazil as a means of resisting enslavement. Highly theatrical and athletic, Capoeira is characterized by

its swift and powerful kicks, jumps and acrobatic flips. DanceBrazil’s artistic director, Jelon Vieira, founded the company with the late Loremil Machado in 1977 as The Capoeiras of Bahia, later changing its name to DanceBrazil at the sugges-tion of legendary dancer and choreog-rapher Alvin Ailey. Vieira continues to teach Capoeira to people of all ages and from all walks of life in both Brazil and the United States. DanceBrazil will perform the Scott-sdale premieres of two new dances choreographed by Vieira: Batuke, a heart-pounding exploration of sound, rhythm and movement; and Imfazwe, a high-energy work propelled by the traditional and contemporary conno-tations of war, fighting and dance.

Reviewers’ Roundtable

The following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists’ full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Chimpanzee’

A 3-year-old chimpanzee is separated from his troop and is then adopted by a fully-grown male. Narrated by Tim Allen. (G – 75 minutes)

Joseph: “You would have to be bananas to deny that ‘Chimpanzee’ is incredibly cute. But that does not mean that it is actually good. Even with a mere 75-minute runtime, the latest documentary from DisneyNa-ture lacks enough material to fill up a feature-length film. Its scope is simply far too focused. Granted, this approach gives directors Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield an opportunity to form a fairy tale from their footage, but said fairy tale takes entirely too long to get to the point.” Grade: D

‘Damsels in Distress’

A trio of girls (Greta Gerwig, Mega-

lyn Echikunwoke and Carrie Ma-cLemore) set out to change the male-dominated environment of the Seven Oaks college campus and rescue their fellow students from depression, grunge and low standards of every kind. (PG-13 – 99 minutes)

Stan: “’Delightfully insane’ is the thought that comes to mind as the ex-tremes in personality types are flaw-lessly presented by a talented cast of up and coming actors with a well chiseled script by writer/director Whit Stillman with my thought of keeping a tighter rein on one’s own personal-ity eccentricities’.” Grade: C

Randy: “‘Damsels in Distress’ features fine acting from a talented, relatively unknown cast. This would be an outstanding feature at a film festival, but for movie going audi-ences outside of the ‘art house,’ the non-stop dialogue and often-psy-chotic behavior by the lead characters may prove too much. The well-written script and perfect execution by the ac-tors deserve accolades.” Grade: B+

Joseph: “‘Damsels in Distress’ is en-tertaining for about 9 minutes. Then it becomes insufferable for the remain-ing 90 minutes. However, it is not as if anything changes after those first

9 minutes of the new comedy from writer/director Whit Stillman. That is merely the amount of time it takes the viewer to come to the realization that the filmmaker has no intention whatsoever to tell a story that is even remotely cohesive. The only glue that holds this mess together is the act of being annoyed.” Grade: F

‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi’

A documentary on 85-year-old sushi master Jiro Ono, his business in the basement of a Tokyo office building and his relationship with his son and eventual heir Yoshikazu. (PG – 81 minutes)

Stan: “I’ll never think of fish in the same way again after experiencing the fervor and creative expertise gathered over a lifetime of dedication by sushi master Jiro Ono to be the best at his chosen craft which hints at the underlying factor of defining one’s direction in living life.” Grade: C+

Randy: “One cannot help but like Jiro and his story. This rather humble man has lived out his dream and will be passing on his legacy to his grateful sons. It’s a warm-hearted documen-tary that will have you booking a flight to Japan to sample Jiro’s cuisine for

‘The Lucky One’*

A Marine (Zac Efron) travels to North Carolina after serving three tours in Iraq and searches for the unknown woman (Taylor Schilling) he believes was his good luck charm during the war. Based on the best-selling book of the same title by Nicholas Sparks. (PG-13 – 101 minutes)

*Screened after deadline.

‘Marley’

The story of Bob Marley, a towering figure of musical history, whose music and message has transcended differ-ent cultures, languages and creeds to resonate around the world today as powerfully as when he was alive. (PG-13 – 145 minutes)

Stan: “Expecting the biographical documentary style to present a view of the legendary Bob Marley that many of us ‘boomers’ adopted along

with musicians like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez who spoke with their mu-sic during the peace moment of the 60s, director Kevin Macdonald takes

us on a journey of discovery as Bob Marley, like many of us at the time, secured a firm hold on our convic-tions.” Grade: B

Joseph: “‘Marley’ is as moving as it is mesmerizing. That statement will ring true for a viewer whether or not he or she is a fan of the musician whose life story is the subject of the new documentary from director Kevin Macdonald. It is just unfortunate that the film does not come with an alternate audio track for those non-fans who, like myself, desire said story’s substance but cannot tolerate its sound.” Grade: C

‘Think Like a Man’

Four friends (Michael Ealy, Jerry Fer-rara, Terrance J and Romany Malco) conspire to turn the tables on their women (Taraji P. Henson, Gabrielle Union, Regina Hall and Meagan Good) when they discover the ladies have been using Steve Harvey’s rela-tionship advice against them. (PG-13 – 122 minutes)

Randy: “Going in with low expecta-

tions, this laugh-out-loud funny, often hysterical comedy did not disappoint, not even for a minute. With a running time of just around two hours, there was not a dull moment. You will be reciting the one-liners and bits of this smartly written film. Sure, at times it feels like an infomercial for Steve Harvey’s book of the same name, but a funny infomercial it is.” Grade: A

Joseph: “By acknowledging and subsequently playing with its own stereotypes, ‘Think Like a Man’ rises above most romantic comedies of its ilk. However, then it starts to take itself seriously. The first hour of direc-tor Tim Story’s new movie, which is based on a self-help book written by comedian Steve Harvey, includes plenty of self-referential nods to the most common clichés of its genre. It is an approach that is as fresh as it is funny. Unfortunately, the flick eventu-ally falls into the very traps of which it had been making fun.” Grade: C

‘Touchback’

On the game winning play of the biggest game of his life, a high school football player (Brian Presley) injures his knee and destroys his dreams of a college and professional career. Fifteen years later, he receives the

opportunity of a lifetime – the chance to go back and change history. (PG-13 – 118 minutes)

Stan: “Before one thinks ‘another sports film’, think a film about life choices as this movie reminded me of the injury that ended my film pro-duction career at 61 years old and a question asked by a colleague if I could change that moment to avoid the injury would I, ‘Touchback’ reaf-firmed my thought of I know where this current path has taken me, the other would be that unknown factor, will surely linger with you long after the closing credits roll and the screen fades to black…” Grade: B

Randy: “If you can get over the fact that 34-year old Brian Presley is playing a high school student, you may find yourself totally immersed in this slow-moving heartfelt piece of filmmaking. Thought-provoking and all-around enjoyable, ‘Touchback’ will have you evaluating the choices

‘Film Noir’ is a term coined by French movie critics for a style of American black & white films marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace that evolved from the late 1930s until 1960.

you have made in life and how many of those decisions may have been made for you. This is one that will have you talking long after leaving the theater.” Grade: A

Joseph: “‘Touchback’ is tremen-dously touching – so long as you can get past the fact that 30-something-year-old actors are playing both middle-aged folks and high school students. The new inspirational sports drama from writer/director Don Handfield tackles a topic that is likely one of the most universal truths of the human experience – regrets are inevitable. However, the movie helps the viewer see said regrets in a new light, encouraging not only content-ment but also excitement over the weird way that the universe tends to work to our advantage – even if we do not yet realize it.” Grade: B

Soundbite Spotlight

The following quotes were pulled from

interviews conducted by AZ Weekly En-tertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released in theaters.

Filmmaker Kevin Macdonald (‘Marley’)

By Stan Robinson

“One of the hardest aspects about the documentary I wanted to do on Bob Marley is to get the music rights. The word had gotten out that I was trying to pull the project together when I get a phone call saying, I hear you’re into Bob Marley and want to direct a film about his life; if you’re interested in doing it I have the rights to the music. Of course I said YES.

The music is one of the things that people admire about him (Bob Marley) so much is that his music is peace, harmony, and unity, and is non-racial and makes you feel good. There’s not very much music that makes you feel so good.

It was a huge amount of work to get the film made, almost two years of work. A lot of people who knew him were reluctant to talk on camera because they felt like it was private stuff. It took months and monthsjust to get the interviews for the film. The second thing was archival film, there’s not a lot of footage of the first

10 years of his life, the first photo-graph of Bob is when he was 16 years old because you have to remember, he comes from a third world country so nobody had cameras or were mak-ing film which made it very difficult to make this film.

I had to figure out ways to present certain aspects of his life. That’s what I love about documentaries, it’s the opposite of fiction, and you have to investigate, be a detective. It was a lot of fun and a big privilege to pres-ent such a fascinating story. I’m glad it brought back such fond memories of that period in your life, thanks so much from one Bob Marley fan to another!” – Kevin Macdonald

“When I met with Don Handfield, he’s a first time director, I was really taken with his connection to the story. His emotional connection to it and my character as the mother in the story reminded him a lot of his grandmother or mother, can’t remember which, but he was so con-nected to her and my character’s role in the story. I was very moved by his writing for all of the characters and felt I was going to be in good hands.

Sometimes first time directors are control freaks, they want to micro-manage everything. Don is so con-

Sfident and open, making it a very ful-fillingexperience for me. Even though my part is small, it was great. Don was not that way at all, he knew to hire the right actors and fly with what each of us brought to our characters.

‘Touchback’ is such a moving film with the theme of if you could have a second chance at life, would you re-ally do anything differently, and if you

wouldn’t, to appreciate every single aspect of what your life really is. That final scene in the soy bean field was so moving to me because it’s a reminder of close knit family, and friends that the central character had and he took it all for granted while feeling sorry for himself, and couldn’t get past his self pity, to see the forest through the trees, are really great lessons for all of us to think about…” – Christine Lahti

“Margin Call” (2011): Tucci is perfect to play the first victim of a financial institution’s meltdown at the cusp of the economic crisis.

“Burlesque” (2010): In a literally well-suited part, Tucci plays the man who outfits the dancers at a Los Angeles club with the title approach.

“The Lovely Bones” (2009): A thoroughly unsettling Tucci earned the film’s sole Oscar nomination in the adaptation of Alice Sebold’s best-seller about the aftermath of a girl’s murder.

“The Core” (2003): Tucci is ideally cast as an egotistical science expert along for the intraterrestrial ride to restart the earth’s energy center.

Truth about Blackjack Myths I recently spent a couple days in Laughlin Nevada playing Blackjack. At my table I couldn’t believe some of the dumb plays individuals were making, and the idiotic statements that they firmly believed

were true. I know many of you have heard these myths and have seen some of these crazy plays made by uninformed players - so here is the truth about what you have seen and heard. Basic Strategy Assumes the Dealer’s Hole Card Is a 10 This assumption is not what basic

strategy is based on. Basic strategy is based on bust probabilities of the up card that the dealer is showing, or if you prefer, the probability of the dealer making a hand given a certain up card.

The best way to play a hand is derived by a computer given the rules and number of decks used. When players split 10’s or double on 7 or less with an up card of a six, they always assume that the dealer will be hitting 16, when the dealer could have a 5 in the hole and be hitting an 11. Doubling on a Hard 12 This is worth mentioning because I have seen players do it. For example, one gentleman told me that he always doubles hard 12, because he wins 80% of the time.

“Really” I replied. I didn’t want to burst his bubble and inform him that you will only win that bet 34.92% of the time, lose 60.10% and push 4.97%. I guess some people mistake their imagination for reality. Standing on Hard 16 versus the dealers’ 7 Many players believe that it is better to stand with hard 16 versus a dealer up card of 7. The truth is - it’s a terrible hand to begin with, but it’s a 12-5 underdog to win if you hit it, considerably less if you don’t.

The dealer will only bust 26% of the time when showing a 7 so that means almost 3/4 of the time the dealer will make a hand. In fact if you play four hours a week, it will cost you $37 a year by playing this way. Standing on 16 against a 7 doesn’t seem like such a good idea after you have all of the facts.

Standing on the hand of Ace - 6 A hand with an ace involved has to be one of the most confusing hands for a new player since an ace can be valued at one or eleven. A lot of new players when told they have 17 are thankful and stand. The truth is the hand of 17 is a loser against every single dealer up card except a six, you either hit or double Ace -6 but never stand. The dealer Should Always Bust When Showing a 6 The fact is the dealer will make a hand when showing a 6 about 56% of the time. That means, more often than not, the dealer won’t bust - So when you hear players tell the dealer that they should bust when showing a 6 - well it’s just not the case. These kind of comments, identify them as uninformed players.

A Bad Player Messes Up The Cards Players will often blame a player who doesn’t play basic strategy for “taking

the dealer’s bust card”, or “messing up the order of the cards”. The truth is they will help you as much as they will hurt you. From a “long run” point of view it doesn’t affect your outcome. Of course you will remember the moron that split his 10s which enabled the dealer to make his sixteen into a twenty-one instead of busting, but you forgot that the next hand you received “Blackjack” because the order of the cards were changed. When I play - you will never hear me correct a player who plays his hand incorrectly. I figure it’s their money, let them play however they want.

You Can’t Win Playing One on One With The Dealer This is totally not true - in fact I prefer to play one on one. There isn’t a dealer alive that can deal faster than I can count. On my recent trip to Laughlin I found a single deck game that paid 3 to 2 for blackjack, with decent rules and dealt almost all the way through the entire deck. I was able to get one on one with the dealer at about 5am, which is what you want with single deck. For the next hour and a half I absolutely murdered their game. I won’t tell you how much I won but it was enough to buy a small country.

Until next month, remember - money won is twice as sweet as money earned.

DERBY FEVERWith less than a month before the Kentucky Derby May 5 at Churchill Downs, the contenders are starting to come to the forefront but before we get to the logical, proven runners, a word has to go out to the winner of the Louisiana Derby Hero of Order.

Everybody loves an under dog and Hero of Order, a $3,000 yearling purchase, got an ideal 2-hole trip in the Louisiana Derby, held on by a half length and paid $220.80, the largest price ever in the fixture.

Owned and trained by Russian Gennadi Dorochenko, the conditioner didn’t mince any words after his biggest victory.

Dorochenko: “I don’t know why this horse was 99-1. This horse was just 4th in a

$300,000 race, you know, I don’t know why. I ride horses. I work this horse. I do everything I know, you see, this is the result. In America, it is different. You know these people, they workout.

Workouts don’t pay. What do you get for workouts? Money pays at the wire.”

It sounds like he is a man with a plan. As for his runner, the blood is decent. His sire is known as a sprinter, but did win routing. His dam was unraced, but the dam is kin to Grade 1 winner and over $300,000 earner Things Change.

For lightning to strike twice in Kentucky, Hero of Order will have to prove he can handle a contested pace.

Union Rags, if he stays healthy, will be hard to beat in Kentucky even though he lost the last day of March in the Florida Derby. He was left with too much to do and may have been unsettled a bit because he had to be re-shod in the paddock. Union Rags won his first start of

the year without his A game and should come to Churchill primed for a smasher. Trained by Barbaro’s mentor Michael Matz, Union Rags, this is also some quality blood on the bottom side as his winning dam dropped a runner that won at the Kentucky Derby distance on grass. His dam is also kin to Marry Me Do, who won several stakes, cashed 19 times, and earned nearly $400,000. The Florida Derby winner Take Charge Indy just took charge. Calvin Borel, who has won the Kentucky Derby 3 times in the last 5 years, rode this son of A.P. Indy beautifully, opening up a length, taking a little hold and backing off on the throttle, then holding sway by a length to pay $17.40. He was timed in 1:48.79 with a Beyer of 95 and his connections were not surprised.

Take Charge Indy’s pedigree screams quality. His sire took the Breeders’ Cup Classic. His dam won multiple Grade 1s and banked over $2.4 million taking half of her 22 starts. She won several stakes at 9 furlongs and was 2nd beaten 6 in her lone try at a mile and a quarter.

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Hansen has blinding speed and will be prominent in Kentucky, but the pace is always crazy in the Derby and that will not

work to his favor.

Creative Cause carries the hopes of the West Coast. We’ll have a better concept of him after the Santa Anita Derby but he did win the San Felipe despite going wide.

Bodemeister is named for his trainer’s son. Bob Baffert is the dad and this guy ran well to Creative Cause but he is bucking a major trend, and that’s trying to win the Kentucky Derby after not racing at 2. No horse has accomplished that feat since 1882.

Mark Valeski was hung wide every step of the way chasing Hero of Order and he seems to be improving. The pedigree is decent too as there are several route winners in the tree and his dam won stakes routing and banked nearly $350,000.

Other runners that must be watched are Daddy Long Legs, Sabercat, Daddy Knows Best, Wrote and Secret Circle but the feeling at this point is if Union Rags gets a clean trip the first Saturday in May, he will come away with the hardware.

Good luck and have a mint julep for me.

La Condessa Gourmet Taco Shop. Tacos are quite possibly one of my favorite meals when done well. Whether it’s a carne asada street taco with cilantro, onions and lime, or delicate fish with cabbage slaw, tacos command a craving all their own. La Condessa Gourmet Taco Shop (1919 N. 16th Street, Phoenix, 602-254-6330) is a LocalLily.com lunchtime favorite that you’ve probably driven past million times.

The Baja Sur Dogfish Shark Taco is a specialty and is made of a corn tortilla stuffed with big chucks of delicate beer battered dogfish shark. The Oaxacan Black Mole Chicken Shark Taco combines a secret blend of spices, chiles, and chocolate made into a rich flavorful sauce with shredded chicken. Other menu items include big Burros, and Quesas; gourmet handmade corn quesadillas stuffed with a choice of ingredients like mahi mahi, shrimp and poblano, pork shoulder and veggies.

Each meal is made complete with the ever-changing fresh salsa bar filled with a variety of homemade salsas inspired by authentic Mexican traditions. Prices run under $10 per entrée.

The Art & Architecture of Taliesin West. Experienced locals know that time is precious this time of year. The opportunity to spend the weekend outdoors is numbered. A tour of the world-renowned work of Architect Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West (12345 N. Taliesin Dr., Scottsdale, 480-627-5340) is an excellent way to enjoy the last of the season. www.franklloydwright.org/web/Tours.htmlI must admit, it does not sound like the most exciting way to spend the day. However after taking the tour myself last Fall, I was so impressed that I included Taliesin in the LocalLily.com Holiday Gift Guide, and purchased tickets for several people on my list. More than just a historical tour, visitors are encouraged to sit on the furniture designed by Wright and experience firsthand his brilliant ability to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces.

Taliesin West is located on the beautiful Sonoran desert in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains in northeast Scottsdale. The site offers a variety of guided public tours including the most popular Insights Tour, which takes visitors through Wright’s living quarters, dramatic living room, and theater. Tour admission averages $32-$36 for adults with reduced admission available for seniors, military, students and children.

Spend these last few weekends wisely, and take in the rare Art & Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright.

BEER FOR BRAINS – EPICURIAD 2012 By Rhonni Moffitt

What do I love better than great food and wine … a friendly competition that adds in beer and benefits a great cause! That’s exactly what Epicuriad is all about.

When I heard about this concept, I was very intrigued. Beer vs. Wine in an event setting. I’d heard of beer versus wine dinners where each course is paired with a wine and a beer and at the end of the night there’s a tally to see which beverage was viewed by the diners as the best overall pairing with the dishes. The

Epicuriad was held on April 6th at the Firesky Resort in Scottsdale. This was my first time attending this annual event.

There were 11 local chefs that served one (or more) small plates and each table was paired with a beer and a wine. The event-goers then chose their favorite chef and whether they liked the beer or wine pairing better. I found that I preferred half and half … but overall the big winner was “beer.” I loved the ambience of this event. Normally I find these food events are so crowded that you end up standing in line or the chefs run out of food. This was a leisurely pace and we had time and ample opportunity to try each of the tables.

My favorites of the night were:

●● Lobster & Blue Cheese Mac & Cheese from Buzz n Beez … a local food truck. And this one I definitely preferred the Pena Ridge Zin …

●● Chef Anthony Crossly of College Street Brewhouse & Pub who served “Duck 3 Ways” – defi-nitely NOT what I expected from a brew pub! My choice of pairing on this was a tie – wine with one and beer with another …

●● And the winner … Chef Aaron Rickel of Elements who prepared a Braised Korean BBQ Short Rib with Shishito Pepper and Sweet

Potato Hash which was great with the Oskar Blues, Old Chub

Next year I hope to see more of a local slant with local wineries competing against local breweries. With that being said, the chefs went all out and I will definitely return to this event again next year!

The Epicuriad benefits the Beer For Brains Foundation, a worthy cause that’s fighting brain cancer across the country. They have many different events throughout the year. Check them out at www.thebeerforbrainsfoundation.org.

Beer DinnersThe title of this article might be a little off, because, let’s face it…any dinner can be a beer dinner. But for purposes of today’s discussion, we are going to focus on those dinners that are planned as beer dinners, usually at a nice restaurant or hotel ballroom. In a previous article, we discussed the concept of pairing food and beer, now we are going to get a little more in depth.

What is a beer dinner? Great question and one that you might have if you have never attended one. A beer din-ner is typically a four to eight course meal during which a different style of beer is served with each course. Each beer is specifically chosen by the chef or Cicerone to pair properly

with the dish being served. In many cases, the chef will cook with the beer being served or another beer that will complement the meal. Many times the dinners focus on one brewery and feature commentary during the meal from the brewmaster or some other brewery representative. Other times the chef will choose from everything available, with no thought to which brewery, just the best possible pair-ing. Either one can be enjoyable and both have their merits. It is nice to have the brewer of a particular beer discussing the beer while you eat, but the larger variety offered at the latter style of dinner usually provides a better overall meal. And the good news is that just because beer dinners are “typically” held at restaurants doesn’t mean you can’t put one to-

NNoche Dulce from Borderlands Brewery by “King” James Swann

Hello again craft beer lovers today let’s get Local again and chat about Noche Dulce from Borderlands Brewery in Tucson Arizona. You may not yet know of Borderlands as they have only just begun distribution in the Phoenix area but trust me their brews are well worth finding. Brew master Blake Collins has done a great job getting the best out of this brand new brewery. It’s great to see Tucson blowing up just like the Phoenix area. Power to AZ!!!

Noche Dulce is best labeled as a smooth, sweet vanilla porter. It pours jet black with a creamy tan head and leaves really nice lacing on the glass as you finish the brew. The flavour can best be described as mild, sweet and medium bodied. Underlying tones of coffee, vanilla, sweet roasted malt meet the palate upfront with slight hints of earthy spice on the finish. At 7% ABV. and only 15 IBUs you might think this brew will fall short on flavour in a category recently dominated by much bigger Imperial brews. Not So. The balance here is perfect. I must say, I really like this brew.

Great Food Pairings include robust Mexican dishes such as mole’ as well as grilled Asian style vegetable and beef kabobs grilled with a spicy teriyaki sauce. Great booze pairings include Kahlua on the rocks with a twist of mint or baileys and crème.

As always, keep sending those questions and comments to [email protected] . I love hearing them! As promised, next week we shall begin our foray into the local home brew scene. We have many talented home brewers in the area and it’s now time to show them some love! Until Next week, Cheers!

gether yourself using basic principles of food and beer pairing.

How does a beer dinner get put together? Most chefs will start with a basic concept of what they want to do, perhaps a theme or event. Next they will taste beers that are available to them, and start narrowing down which beers they want to use and what type of dishes will go best with them. Finally they decide on the menu and the beer pairings and go to work. As they are preparing the dishes they will adjust the seasoning to provide the best complement to the beers. In other cases the chef will start with a menu and look for beers that will pair with it, again adjusting the prepara-tion of each dish to emphasize the beer pairing. Either way works, but the former tends to be a little more efficient and provide the best possible pairings. The chefs also tend to enjoy that more since it allows them to really exercise their creative muscles and do something a little different.

Beer dinners can be simple or ex-travagant, inexpensive or pricey. I have been to very enjoyable meals that have featured pizza and burg-ers at a cost of only $30 and I have had incredible dinners where the chef threw everything he had in to the meal costing almost $100. Both were fun events for what they were and while the $100 meal was close to

perfection, the pizza and burger meal was much more casual and included a bunch of fun people who really added to the event. It seems as if five courses costing around $50 is the norm for these events.

There are even chefs that have made names for themselves because of their prowess with beer dinners. Bruce Paton who bills himself as The Beer Chef is one of these people. His beer dinners, held until recently at the Cathedral Hotel in San Francisco are dinners of legend. In one of the most wine oriented cities in the country he has made a name for himself with beer. In fact, the owner of a company specializing in wine events had this to say about Chef Paton, “The magical way that Bruce pairs beer and food should have the wine industry very nervous.” If you recall, we have discussed in past articles the versatility beer brings to the table, literally, when matched with food, and how this can far exceed the abili-ties of wine. So, what make Paton so special? How about pairing Slow Poached Arctic Char with Artichoke Salad, Chipotle Aioli and Micro-Arugula and Oskar Blues G’Knight? Or what about Butter Poached Gulf Prawns, Apple Wood Bacon Flan and Citrus Nage with Schneider Wiesse? For those of you that scoffed at previous articles talking about beer

pairing with chocolate, Paton does an annual beer and chocolate event as part of San Francisco Beer Week. A highlight from a previous year was Molten Chocolate Cake with Caramel Sabayon and Fleur du Sel paired with North Coast Old Rasputin. Still think beer and chocolate don’t pair?

Another chef, Sean Paxton, who goes by the title, The Hombrew Chef, has planned and overseen preparation of the feast at the World Beer Cup awards dinner which, at the time, was the largest beer dinner ever served at over 2,000 attendees. Paxton also prepares the food for the annual Belgian Beer Dinner at The Toronado in San Francisco and while it didn’t rival the World Beer Cup for number of attendees, it may have been the largest in terms of courses. This event featured twelve courses, twenty-one beers served and a total of 48 beers including the ones used in cooking…oh and it lasted over five hours.

How about the in-home beer dinner? You can hire a private chef, or prepare it yourself. The best way is to get a few friends together, decide what would be good dishes and pairings, and divide up the work. Everybody can be responsible for one of the courses, match the beers, prepare the food and discuss the pairing at the dinner. It’s a different type of dinner party, and one that should be a good time. One recommendation if you are planning a beer dinner at home, pick

up a copy of The Brewmaster’s Table by Garrett Oliver

In Arizona, beer dinners are starting to become more and more popular. Don’t expect that to change. In fact, as the Phoenix beer culture continues to grow, there will be more demand for these types of events. They offer an opportunity to experience some great food and great beer matched expertly by top chefs in the Valley. When it comes to fun, you really can’t beat that. And if you’re planning a really nice beer dinner at home, you know where to reach me.

Mosaico is one of the most innovative and inspiring new acoustic flamenco groups in the United States. This versatile group has combined the passionate uplifting character of flamenco with the mystical and musical sound of the Nuevo Southwest. By John CrookIf you hold the opinion, as many of us do these days, that

Washington, D.C., apparently is a combination of lunatic asylum and day care center for petulant infants, HBO’s new comedy series “Veep,” which premieres on Sunday, April 22, probably won’t change your mind. It just may relieve your frustration with some healthy laughter, however.

The political sitcom, which marks the return of Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus to series TV, views events in the nation’s capital from the perspective of former senator Selina Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus), a career politician who seemed to be on the fast track to the White House until she was elected vice president. Since then, her political life has become a series of comic missteps in which even her best-intentioned efforts get lost in a maze of red tape and personal politics.

In the first episode, for example, Selina is hopeful that her clean-jobs bill is sailing toward an easy approval, thanks in part to a revolutionary new line of eating utensils made from cornstarch. Unfortunately, someone forgot that cornstarch has a tendency to melt in hot liquids, and worse, the new disposable cutlery is threatening to alienate the plastics industry. And far worse yet, where does plastic come from again? Oil.

Uh-oh.Although HBO is the home of “Real Time With Bill Maher”

and such right wing-riling original movies as “Recount” and “Game Change,” “Veep” is refreshingly nonpartisan in the glee with which it picks its targets, largely because neither Selina nor any of her Washington colleagues are clearly identified by their political party. Series creator Armando Iannucci previously had similar bipartisan fun in his Oscar-nominated 2009 political comedy “In the Loop,” and Louis-Dreyfus says the show can be enjoyed by viewers regardless of their personal politics.

Phochella 420 Festival at Sail Inn The benefits of going to the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, alifornia during the first, of the now two weekends, are aplenty. I could list them all now if I were actually going, but I’m not [sad face]. Instead, I will be green with envy and will hold a slight hate toward those who are fortunate enough to play in the desert while enjoying the year’s best bands live. One benefit--and probably the most important to you all who are reading this right now—is that attending the first weekend frees up this weekend which happens to include one of the most important holidays of the year for prob-ably more people, acquaintances, friends, and coworkers than you think.

It’s Phochella at Tempe’s Sail Inn on Friday! Wootie Woo! Depending on

@YELLOWCABAZ WWW.YELLOWCABAZ.COM480-888-8888

FB:YELLOWCABAZ

your lifestyle, this event may mean different things to you. Perhaps you’ll go to Fauxchella because you just didn’t make it to the real Coachella and the bands playing in Tempe are almost close to a good alternative. Almost. Or maybe you’ll attend Fochella because it’s fo’ twenty, man, and you really enjoy the way music sounds after climbing those little purple and green trees. Whichever reason rocks your socks more, Phochella is just another reason to celebrate life, music, and the community we live in. TMI and KWSS 106.7FM, Phoenix’s new favorite independent radio station, will be broadcasting the party live from noon to 4:20 when over a dozen bands including Black Carl and Peachcake will perform live at the venue. After that, the shenanigans will continue with more live band performances until 2 am. The evening lineup includes, and is definitely not limited to, Kindread, Banana Gun, Kongos, and Fred Green. In case you get the munchies, Cheba Hut will provide food trucks all day to ease your cravings. Check out Beef Vegan’s site for further details and hold that goodness in for as long as you can. Friday, April 20th. Noon to 2 am. 26 S. Farmer Ave. Ages 21+ Pedal Craft PHX at Kitchen Sink Studios Owning a bicycle and riding it around for exercise and as a way to avoid getting a DUI is just plain smart. It’s also a trendy way to get around these days without

having to pay a gazillion bucks for gas. There is definitely a bicycling craze happening in Phoenix recently and this Friday it’s being celebrated downtown. Bicycles, art, and community will come together Friday evening to promote a new kind of pedaling awareness never really encountered in our young city. Local graphic designers will display their bicycle-themed poster artwork for those who go and will sell their limited pieces for $20 each. A portion of the proceeds will go toward the fund to build a temporary “pop-up” park in a vacant lot located in the Roosevelt Row Arts District and Evans Churchill neighborhood. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a “pop-up” park before, however, I’m sure it’ll be artsy and attract at least the hipster crowd that seems to live in that neighborhood. There will also be a dozen creatively designed bicycle racks on display as a way to show the community that riding your bike to work and parking it on an art piece is better than parking your car in an ugly, cement garage. The fun continues with masses of bicyclists (and walkers) partaking in food and drink specials at the surrounding downtown restaurants and bars that have installed bike racks in support of Pedal Craft. The future sounds promising for those who ride bikes and I am willing to ride my mother’s three-wheeled bicycle complete with basket, in order to be a part of it. Friday, April 20th. 6 pm – 10 pm. 828 N. 3rd St. Free.

Q: how did you respond to the pilot script for this show when you got it?

A: Oh, I was in love with it and I wanted to just throw myself at it and let it take me for everything, because I wanted it so badly. It was a mix of quirky and hilarious, a combination of “Mean Girls” and “30 Rock,” and I loved all the flashbacks and all the references. I was super, super excited to be a part of it.

EYES ON THE PRIZEA Guide to Extreme Sports Eye Wear

Protective eyewear is an important part of extreme sports. When participating in extreme sports such as BMX, skateboarding, mountain biking, or sailing, the basics of protective gear – helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads – are rarely forgotten. While protective eyewear is just as important however, it is often overlooked or discarded due to comfort or aesthetic concerns.

The good news is that protective eyewear doesn’t have to be uncomfortable or unfashionable. Here are a few tips to help you tailor your protective eyewear to the extreme sport you engage in to ensure the best in comfort, style, and protection.

BMX Racing

Motocross biking, more informally known as BMX racing, presents a number of hazards to the

eyes. Besides the hazards presented by bright sunlight, mud from the track is often thrown up into the eyes. This can not only obscure the vision but even cause serious injury to the eyes.

For this extreme sport, the best kind of protective eyewear is wrap-around glasses with lenses that are quite large. This kind of eyewear will not only protect your eyes from anything that might fly up from your wheels but will also help to prevent your peripheral vision from being obscured.

Skateboarding

Because the majority of skateboarding is done in urban locations with many types of dangerous obstacles, eye injuries are, unfortunately, a common occurrence. For this extreme sport, protective eyewear may be as important as the obligatory helmet itself. It’s important that the eyewear you choose is extremely resistant to impact as it may take quite a beating. Polycarbonate lenses will usually do the trick.

Make sure that the glasses you choose will fit well onto your frame

and will not fall off your face easily. Wrap-around lenses will help to ensure that your peripheral vision is not blocked.

Mountain Biking

Many of the same dangers to the eyes found in BMX racing are also present in mountain biking, but mountain biking comes with its own set of challenges. There are two sides of mountain biking, the descent, and the ascent. For your ascent up the mountain, it’s important that your glasses are properly vented and have plenty of airflow. Glasses tend to fog up during periods of strenuous work

that are coupled with little forward progress.

For the descent, however, goggles may be imperative. Because of the great speed involved in the descent, it’s important that the eyewear you use offers maximum protection against bugs, wind, and grit. In extremely muddy mountain biking conditions, you may want to consider eyewear that comes with a number of sticky transparent plastic layers that can be ripped off one at a time when your face is repeatedly splattered by mud.

Sailing

One of the primary dangers to the

eyes when sailing comes from the bacteria-infested sand or water that is often splashed into them when navigating open waters. The glare from the sun’s rays bouncing off the surface of the water can also pose an irritating and annoying problem.

Vented goggles with clear lenses can help to protect you from the first danger and are an essential part of any sailor’s gear, especially when sailing in harsh conditions. Sunglasses featuring polarized lenses can help to ward off headaches caused by sunlight glare and should be kept close at hand for those times of day when the sun throws its worst at you.
