The ten minutes spent with your child and a book should be the best ten minutes of your child’s day. It is not about reading today but about coming back to read again tomorrow and the day after. Eliminate the stress and anxiety of reading together. If you always sit in the same place to do home reading, vary the location. Go outside and read under a tree, take the book to the coffee shop, or simply sit on the lounge room floor. Children sense your anxiety. Reading is about trust. Readers (especially struggling readers) are vulnerable. Parents' expectations often get in the way if they experience anxiety and fear around reading. Alleviate the stress by doing shared reading or echo reading. Laugh. Lighten up. Children learn when they are having fun. If your child insists on reading his favourite book for the 55th time, read it with pleasure and then say “I noticed this book on your shelf, I would like to read that to you when we finish.” Reading a book is an invitation and children need to be given the opportunity to choose. Our focus has been on improving reading outcomes for our students and in our final sessions this week we will be looking forward to

Analysing our current evidence of impact and refine our improvement strategies

Developing the capacity to AMPLIFY our change initiatives across our sites in order to spread and sustain impact beyond a small pocket

Staff Professional Learning

On our Pupil Free Day, staff were involved in developing their professional knowledge and understanding in a variety a ways. All staff attended an information session presented by Support Services about “Interoception” and how this 8th sense is a tool to support students’ wellbeing. Teachers also worked together on scaling and moderating students’ writing samples as part of the Bright Path Writing and on the development of the Seaford K-7 Numeracy Agreement. NEW Volunteer Process

This year Michelle has been working on implementing the department’s NEW Volunteer Policy at our site. An overview for our site has been sent as an attachment with this newsletter. This procedure has changed considerably and all parents/carers need to be aware of the NEW expectations and requirements volunteers NEED to have before they can volunteer their time with us. These are in the policy but the main changes are below and need to be done before an onsite induction with Michelle can be arranged- 1. DSCI screening, called the ‘Relevant History Screening’, which is a requirement by the Department for Education for anyone working with children 2. online RAN EC training for volunteers (90 minutes) and the online Volunteers in DECD Induction (20 minutes). So if you are wanting to volunteer to go on an excursion or camp from now on you need to ensure this process is completed. Please ask at the Front Office for the Volunteer Pack so you can begin the process as the DSCI screenings can take considerable time to be approved. Thank you for your assistance with this! Belinda Adams Principal.

Buddy Classes

In Week 5, Penny and Bec’s Year 4/5 class showed Naomi’s Year 1/2 buddies the learning they have been doing in digital technology. The Year 4/5’s have spent four weeks learning to create dynamic PowerPoint presentations. We began by inserting images and text, then adding transitions to each page. We created PowerPoint games using hyperlinks.

Casual Clothes Day - Last Day of Term 3

The SRC are holding a Casual Clothes Day fundraiser on the last day of this term with students able to wear sensible, casual clothes and make a gold coin donation which will go towards ‘Hampers for Hay’ to help support our farmers.

Student Leader’s Day

On Thursday the 30th of August our four School Leaders represented Seaford at the annual Student Leadership Day. This day is hosted by Labor MP for Kingston, Amanda Rishworth and included inspirational speakers. This year we heard from the Adelaide Strikers General Manager, Bronwyn Klei who spoke about her role as a leader. She had 5 tips about leadership which she shared in an interesting slideshow. We also heard from Young Australian of the Year, Kyron Dixon. He spoke about his journey as a representative of young indigenous males, a sportsman and as a survivor of

cancer. The Captain of the Thunderbirds, Leana de Bruin and Detective Chief Inspector of SAPOL, Scott Fitzgerald also shared about their leadership journeys and roles. The School Leaders

listened intently, taking notes and discussing what advice each leader had to share. They were able to ask questions and took some time to think about their own role as a leader in our school community. Here are their take-away messages from the day: Bella: ‘Never give up. If you have a dream go for it and be confident in yourself’. Riley: ‘You are not a born leader, you become one’. Elliott: ‘Listening to the speakers, learning from their leadership and being able to ask questions’. Kaeleigh: ‘Be confident in yourself as a school leader and if you have a problem it is better off shared so it can be worked on’. It was a pleasure to be at the event with them, thank you to families for supporting the day. Michelle.

Our class was given a wonderful opportunity to go ‘behind the scenes’ and learn about how a grocery store operates through Woolworth's Food Discovery Tour. We were welcomed by an awesome guide, Melissa who ensured everyone wore hairnets, aprons (for hygiene) and a carrot crown (for fun).

The tour began in the bakery and we got to see how all the yummy breads and desserts are made. We even got to sample a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie. Next we investigated the deli where students got to go into the freezer. They saw where the trucks are loaded. We learnt about heathy eating, different kinds of fruits and vegetables and how they are grown. Students had lots of questions!!

Students got to try many delicious samples. We ended the tour by choosing our own piece of fruit and everyone received an activity pack to take home.

What a great experience! Mrs. Zammit

We learned to ride horses. I know you have to stop the horse by pulling up on the reins. To go you tap both feet on the side of the horse. To go left or right you pull the reins in that direction.
