PART II: Information about the School’s Activity/Programme on Education for Disaster Risk Reduction The information of part II from no.1 to 11 should be no longer than eight pages long (A4 type, Arial font, size 11 point). A half to one page A4 of the project summary should be included. 1. Title of the school’s activity/programme on Education for Disaster Risk Reduction DIY Multi-Purpose Environmental Friendly Plant Enzyme Product 2. Summary of the activity/programme (a half to one page A4) We have carried out the processing of DIY Multi-Purpose Environmental Friendly Plant Enzyme Product as a co- curricular activity under the school Environmental Club since 2008. We use the kitchen waste consisting of fruit skins, rotten fruits and vegetables waste to undergo fermentation together with sugars/molasses ( local nipah palms sugars) and water in an air-tightened container for 3 months or more till the mixture developed into a plant enzyme product. During the fermentation process, under the pressure in an air-tightened container, gases will be released. One of the gases is ozone (O3) which will help in reducing risk of the global warming of our earth. We have been using this plant enzyme diluted with water and mixed with a much lesser amount of detergent compared to normal for toilet cleaning, floor mopping as well as sprayings for garden plants. We have found that the stinking odor from the toilets is been minimized. The floor shines after being mopped with the product. The plants and vegetables look green and beautiful when being sprayed of the product in its dilute form. We also use the product for dish washing and laundry purposes. The clothes can be soaked overnight or longer without emitting smelly odors. In 2010, we carried research development on the product. We carried out test using the radioactive tester. It is found out that when the enzyme product is put near electrical points, computers, mobile phones, the reading of the tester will go down. This shows that it has an anti-radioactive property which will decrease the radioactive effects of the electrical equipments. This new finding stirs up excitements. We then use small bottles to fill the finished plant enzyme. We make O-ring test with it and find the following findings: (A) The O-ring created by a thumb and a finger pointer is easily broken by an opponent. (Photo 1). (B) The O-ring created with the enzyme product held at another hand is difficult to be broken by the opponent. (Photo 2) (C)The same test is carried out with a radioactive tester. A person holding a mobile phone shows that reading is higher. (Photo 3) (D) The reading of the tester goes down when the enzyme product is placed near the mobile phone. (Photo 4) (E)The same test is carried out at a computer. The reading on the tester is recorded. (Photo 5)

(F) The reading of the tester goes down when the enzyme product is placed near the computer. (Photo 6) (G)The same test is carried out at a switch point. The reading on the tester is recorded. (Photo 7) (H) The reading of the tester goes down when the enzyme product is placed near the switch point. (Photo 8) This simple experiment shows that by holding the plant enzyme product, the electronic flow of our body is renewed by the flow of the electrons from the enzyme product. From the collective experiences, we then use the bottle filled with the plant enzyme product at computers and in rooms so as to keep us free from the effects of the radioactive. We even feel relieved when we roll the bottle on our forehead after we feel exhausted due to sitting too long in front of computers. If we feel restless and unable to go to sleep, we even hold the bottle with the plant enzyme product so that we can go to sleep soundly. Besides, we have other findings. We have also found the effectiveness of the plant enzyme product for eliminating the itches of mosquito bites and the stings of bees. After applying the plant enzyme product, the itch and pain disappear without causing any trace of the bites as well as the stings. We have further developed into a fruit enzyme drink using all specific fruits skins and traditional herb plants. In November 2013 ,Our school has developed this plant enzyme using specific plants and discovered the following findings: (A) As an anti- parasite agent to eliminate the growth of mosses on cement floor and brick surfaces. To eliminate the mosses on the cement floor and brick surfaces, we use the enzyme product without diluting it. After spraying on the surface for about half an hour, the mosses or parasite will turn black and separated from the surfaces. (Photo 9) (B) As an insecticide agent to decrease the amount of ants and mosquitoes in the school surrounding. After applying the plant enzyme by diluting it to a correct ratio, ants and mosquitoes are less found in the school surrounding. The herbs used in the enzyme have insect repellent properties especially for ants. The other ants which brought back ants which have been sprayed with the enzyme will be affected and they can not survive, too. (Photo 10) (C)As a white board cleanser to replace chemical cleanser for the white board. The enzyme product is diluted in a correct ratio to see effective result in cleansing the white board. The white board looked clean and shiny after cleansing. (Photo 11) (D)As massage moisturizer to be used to massage affected areas of the pupils due to sprains of ankles or body parts while playing or physical training and exercising in the school. We even help to massage the affected areas of the pupils’ parents using the enzyme product, too. (Photo 12) Pupils and teachers who feel dizziness are also treated with the enzyme by massaging their neck, arms and the back of their body. We hope that we can develop this plant enzyme product to a product which not only help save mother earth but also promote Education for Sustainable Development best practices in school and communities which further developed to serve as a health measure to the complicate system of human body and balanced the whole eco system from nature to nature. 3. Background information or reasons why the school initiated this activity/programme The school starts this activity after collecting information from friends who have experiences in using this method of processing plant enzyme at their own homes. We also adapt the collective knowledge which we inherit from the Chinese community and native community in processing tonic drinks using the rice, yeast and water which is a similar story in the process of making this plant enzyme product. For the earlier stage of making this plant enzyme product, our school environmental club is doing on a small scale. Our aim of carrying out this activity is mainly to decrease the waste from the kitchen at the same time we can recycle the waste into another source whereby the end product can be used for cleaning and gardening purposes. Later, we gathered information that ozone gas will be produced during the process which can help save our environment. As our school mission is towards nature conservation, so we start to raise fund with the help of our school managing board and the School Parents and Teachers Association. Then, we start producing the plant enzyme in a larger scale with the fund as well as other fund given by the Member of Parliament. We have not enough kitchen waste as the main ingredient, so we develop further by using the herbal plants grown in our school surrounding. The herbs plants include the citrus limon (lemons), the pandanus odorus (fragnant screwpine), the Cymbopogen citratus (lemon grass) and

the metha suaveolens (apple mint). The enzyme product from these herbs that is harvested becomes the marvellous stories of our school. In recent years, we further develop the enzyme using local fruits like papayas, bananas which have anti parasite properties. Spices like garlics, yellow gingers and local gingers are being used to make insect repelling plant enzyme product. Till now, the processing of this plant enzyme product becomes our yearly programme which involves each and every student of aged 7 years to 12 years. Since 2008 that is, it is more than 6 years we have been continuing this good practice in processing this plant enzyme after undergoing research and development with new ingredients from local fruits and traditional herbs innovating it to a more effective and specific environmental friendly plant enzyme product. Each student has a chance to take part in the share in carrying out the programme whether in group or individual in every form of the classes from Year 1 (7 years) to year 6 (12 years). 4. Objectives/goals of the activity/programme Minor objectives of the activity consist of: (i) to decrease the waste from the kitchen (ii) to educate the young generation the concept of 3R as well as to practice the concept of 3R to decrease waste (iii) to recycle the kitchen waste for an alternative use which is money saving (purchase less

detergent for cleansing purposes and minimize the use of inorganic fertilizers for the garden plants)

Major objectives of the activity consist of: (i) to develop a condusive and favorable learning ground (ii) to contribute to the conservation of nature and environment (iii) to inculcate the Love for Mother earth at young age. (iv) to carry out research and development of the plant enzyme product to a more effective use saving our earth. (v) to instill the interest of the students so as to further research and develop the plant enzyme product using alternative herbal plants for more specific purposes like anti parasite

agent, white board cleanser, massage moisturizer and more. (vi) to encourage more people to participate in the activity so that each and everyone can contribute to decrease global warming by making the product at home. (vii) to integrate the Disaster risk Reduction programme in all the other co-curricular activities of

our school so that all the students can be involved in this plant enzyme product project. (viii) to enforce our role in saving Mother Earth to help reduce disaster risk due to Global

warming (ix) to raise a sustainable development on the Disaster Risk Reduction activity in our school. 5. Period of time when this activity/programme was/has been implemented This activity is started since 2008. It is first done as a trial but fully implemented in 2009. It is now implemented and sustained as a yearly programme of the school environmental club. 6. Activities (Short-term actions and strategies of implementation of the short-term actions) As our school mission is towards nature conservation, the processing of DIY multi-purpose environmental friendly plant enzyme product is one of the projects in the short term and long term plans of the School Environmental Club. It becomes one of the operational projects of the club. The members have their meeting on every Wednesday afternoon from 2pm to 4pm. For the plant enzyme product processing activity, the members will

(i) carry out plant enzyme making (ii) use empty mineral water bottles to harvest the plant enzyme that is ready (iii) use the enzyme diluted in water in the ratio of 1:100/500/1000 to spray on the

plants in the school garden (iv) use the enzyme diluted in water in the ratio of 1: 200 to clean the toilets and mop

the floors. 7. Resources used for implementing the activity/programme

The resources which are used are simple and cheap. The main ingredients are parts of plants (leaves/stems of vegetables or fruits or herbal plants), molasses (raw sugars) and water. We also need air-tightened plastic containers for storing the mixture of the above ingredients in the ratio of 3:1:10 to undergo fermentation process. The plastic containers are left at cool shady place during the process of fermentation. They are also put at classrooms. (refer photo 13 ) Molasses can be of higher amount to make the fermentation more complete. During the fermentation process anaerobic bacteria formed feeds on molasses to multiply in numbers. At the same time the gases formed need to be released by untightening the cap once a day for a period of a month and it will be left to ferment till it is ready to be harvested. 8. Monitoring and evaluation mechanism and results The programme is monitored by the school head teacher Madam Lee Leh Choo assisted by the co-curricular senior assistant Madam Ting Heng Hiong. The teacher in charge of the School Environment Club Madam Tiong Hoe Chin will make sure the activity be one of the projects of the club to be carried accordingly as planned. This teacher will also keep an account of the sales of the product. It is a successful programme since it was first as a trial in 2008 and fully started in 2009. We still have the products which we have processed in 2009 till now. Every year we will make enzyme to replace the product which has been harvested. We can even clone the enzyme to shorten the period of processing. 9. List of partners, local government bodies, companies or development agencies who

11. Plan for sustainability and plan for the future Plan for sustainability: The activity will be carried out as a continuous activity of the School Environmental club. We obtain our fund from the selling of the plant enzyme product. The cash money from the sales enhances our finance and even helps to sustain other nature conservation activities. The product has not had an open market yet. But we have frequent consumers who always come back to purchase the product for household use. Plan for the future: We have planned to develop the product using different herbal plants. One of the herbs we have planted in our surrounding is the Calaphyllum inophyllum ( Bintangor tree) which is said to have anti-HIV properties. According to a newspaper report, it is said that Calanoide B can be extracted from the twigs and leaves of the Bintangor tree and its extract (Calanoide B) is linked to an enzyme to inhibit HIV Virus. We have processed the plant enzyme product with its leaves, twigs and bark in 2010 but we haven’t had the scientific knowledge to carry out experiment with it. We are hoping to see some interest ones who are able to share in developing it to a more greater use. Besides, we are going to further develop the enzyme product into a consumable product using different kinds of local herbal plants like Strobilanthes crispus (pecah beling), citrus limon (lemons), the pandanus odorus (fragnant screwpine), the Cymbopogen citratus (lemon grass) and the metha suaveolens (apple mint) and other herbal plants in the school herbal garden. Some of these herbal plants like citrus limon (lemons) and the Cymbopogen citratus (lemon grass) have been processed for a period of 3 years as a plant enzyme drink. We have marvelous testimonials of our staffs and friends who have consumed this product and have found that it can cure gastric, digestive and asthma problems. We can even duplicate or expand the enzyme by using the mother enzyme which has been processed in our school. The whole team of Ming Tee Primary School is anxious to further develop these herbal plants which are locally grown in our school garden into traditionally cures as an alternative measure for health problems to benefit mankind. We yearn to promote ESD best practice of this DIY Multi Purpose Environmental Friendly Plant Enzyme Product not only in our school and the community around but further throughout our country and across Southeast Asia, finally to the mankind community of the whole world. 12.
