T he tart-tongued Countess Violet
Crawley is an audience favorite character in Downton Abbey. And a halo is one of the few kinds of strik-ing headgear that one does not see on the
enduring hit mini-series from Britain. So, when PBS Hawaii held a series of
events to celebrate Downton Abbey’s return to Masterpiece Classic this month with Season Five, many attend-ees showed up with a 1920s-style hat or headband. These headpieces sprout-ed fine feathers, jewels, fur, lace, chif-fon and ribbon.
If a guest didn’t have head decor and wanted it, one of our Downton Abbey partners, Hawaii-based fashion designer Anne Namba of Anne Namba Designs, offered an assortment of beautiful pieces. She and a top aide
handcrafted all of them, putting the fun in a fundraiser for PBS Hawaii.
Viewers who’ve been drawn into the daily life and dramas of the great manor, upstairs and downstairs, welcomed the excuse to channel another era.
A member of PBS Hawaii’s Board of Directors, Architects Hawaii President Bettina Mehnert, wore a beautiful black lace dress that her grandmother once wore in Germany, and topped the ensemble with a hat bearing grand pea-cock feathers.
Beta Beta Gamma sorority alumni who volunteered on our phone bank came in flapper dresses, long gowns
and long gloves, pearls, beads and hats with veils.
In partnership with the elegant Hawaii Theatre and its new President, Ruth Bolan, along with Yelp Hawaii

Peter Merriman How is it that the culinary movement now known as Hawaii Regional Cuisine was developed by someone who grew up in a steel mill town in Pennsylvania? Chef and restaurateur Peter Merriman tells his story of falling in love with the people, culture and food of Hawaii – and how that love and respect led to a culinary movement.
8:00 THE KLONDIKE GOLD RUSH 9:00 AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Ripley: Believe It
or Not LeRoy Robert Ripley rose to fame
When Matt Sproat and Kale Hannahs first start-ed playing music together, they knew they
had “something.” But they needed a name.Sproat grew up on Kawaipuna Street in Hauula on
Oahu’s Windward Coast. His grandfather told him the street name translated to “spring water.”
But it meant more than just that. Sproat recalls
spoke, everything was poetic. Waipuna doesn’t just mean ‘spring water.’ In essence, it means a source of the spring where the water first exits the earth. That water that comes out of the earth went through a cycle. The wind drops the rain; the rain seeps through the earth and comes back to the earth as new water.”
Sproat says, “It kind of fit what we were doing,” Sproat says. “What we loved to do…was to take
some of these old songs and old hula tunes, and breathe new life into it.”
Hannahs explains, “It’s still the same water. It could be a new incarnation of water, but if you break it down to a scientific makeup, it’s still H2O.”
When David Kamakahi joined the duo in 2011, Waipuna’s “progressive” style of Hawaiian music evolved. “I think that being able to not only rely on David for that extra vocal part – his instrumental ability is just fantastic,” Sproat says. “He’s one of the perfect complements that we could’ve ever asked for.”
On PBS Hawaii’s Na Mele, the men of Waipuna present their interpretation of Hawaiian music, accompanied by hula dancer Jaimie Kennedy. From “Malama Mau Hawaii,” a selection from Waipuna’s first album, to “E Mau Ke Aloha,” composed by David’s father, Dennis Kamakahi, Waipuna will take you through a joyful musical cycle, leaving you thirsty for more.

Years ago, 16-year-old honor student Darius Clark Monroe was arrested for robbing a bank. Seventeen years after serving his
sentence, Monroe returns to his childhood home and encounters the people affected by the robbery: his family, victims at the bank and his partners in crime. Darius, now 33, turns the camera on a past he deeply regrets and tries to make the audience understand how he came to make the decision he made without providing excuses for his actions.

For two decades, Higa’s audits have challenged the Hawaii Superferry, the Department of Education and several governors.

Last month, PBS Hawaii held a preview screening of the Downton Abbey Season 5 premiere at the Hawaii Theatre Center. The event attracted fans of all ages, many of whom
dressed in 1920s attire. Attorneys and friends from Hawaii law firm Carlsmith Ball joined the celebration. The firm is a returning local broadcast sponsor of the award-winning Masterpiece drama.
“PBS Hawaii does so much to benefit our com-munity through its diverse, educational and high-quality programming,” said Michael Purpura, a Carlsmith Ball partner. “The firm feels a respon-sibility to give back as well, and working with PBS Hawaii is a great fit.”
As a viewer and parent, Michael knows the unique mix of PBS Hawaii programs reaches the entire community. “I think Frontline is an exceptional program, but I also enjoy watching Sesame
Street, WordGirl and Martha Speaks with my daughter,” Michael said. “Carlsmith Ball is proud to partner with PBS Hawaii and support programs that bring the community and families together.”
Mahalo a nui loa to Carlsmith Ball for your business support. If you or your business would like to become a PBS Hawaii community partner, contact Tatsu Sasaki at [email protected] or call (808) 973-1990.

HIKI N -O: Facing the FutureThursday, January 15 at 7:30 PM

winning filmmaker Stuart Yamane, examines a new phase in the evolu-tion of the nation’s first statewide student news network. Those involved in the February 2011 launch of HIKI N -O were pur-suing a dream that was about to be realized. Four years later, the digital learning initiative has made a real impact on thousands of students and hundreds of teachers. Now, a new dream has transpired: to develop HIKI N -O as a sanc-tioned, official class within Hawaii’s statewide school system, and into a curriculum available to public, private and charter schools. In its current form, HIKI N -O is an extracurricular activity in most of the 90 partici-pating schools. Thanks to funding from the Stupski Family Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation, PBS Hawaii has the resources needed to realize this dream. In this new documentary, teachers, students, curriculum developers, education evaluators, media professionals, and leaders from the Depart-ment of Education and PBS Hawaii share their vision for what this new curriculum will look like and how it will work – charting a course into a new education frontier.
