Dear parishioners and visitors, One of the things that baffle me is the notion that human beings and animals are weighed or considered equal. There are people who are most passionate when it comes to neglect or abuse of animals yet see nothing wrong with abortion and child neglect; and the opposite can be very true as well. I do not like hearing people abusing animals. I grew up on a farm which we were surrounded by them; we took care of them. We treated them well because we saw them as gifts from God. Whenever I hear about someone who has abused them, it makes me angry that a living creature has to endure suffering. However, I know too that human beings are the top of creation and animals are at the pleasure of humanity. So, I am mystified that some will put human beings and animals as equals. There is something very fundamentally wrong. It will be 43 years ago on January 22nd that abortion was legalized in this country. Countless millions of abortions on human beings were ended even some by partial-birth abortion. One of the many illogical statements used is that it is merely a product of conception and not a human being. It is odd when people determine when human life begins which varies from conception to after the child is born. The fertilized human ovum cannot be anything else than a human being. Shouldn’t it be that it be the greatest of God’s creation that demands the upmost respect and protection by all? Thank you and God bless you. Msgr. Stoetzel The intercession this week is to pray for the respect of human life from the moment of conception to the last natural breath. CONFESSION SCHEDULE Please note there should be confessions on Saturday, January 23rd, from 4:00 – 5:00 PM at the Cathedral. However, Fr. Hennes will be coming back that day from the March for Life in Washington, D.C. If he is delayed, confessions will be cancelled on short notice so that Msgr. Stoetzel can hear confessions from 3:30 – 4:15 PM, and say the 4:30 PM Mass at St. James. There will be no confessions on Saturday, January 30th in the afternoon. Msgr. Stoetzel will be on vacation; Fr. Hennes will have confessions and the 4:30 PM Mass at St. James. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience.

Sacraments & Services Baptism: Parents may request the baptism of their infants at least two months prior to the anticipated date of baptism. The baptism of infants at the Cathedral is ordinarily celebrated on Sundays at 12:00 noon. To request a baptism, please call 782-0322. Baptism of infants at St. James the Less on Sundays at 10:00 am. A class for parents is required. Marriage: Couples who want to request the celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage should contact the rector/pastor at the time of formal engagement or at least six months prior to the anticipated date of marriage. In the case of a mixed marriage, the

A PICTURE FROM YESTERYEAR This past week, the Cathedral had two pleasant surprises. The first surprise came when Mr. Edward Noelke, from Carl B. Noelke Company (across the street from the Cathedral), dropped off a black and white photograph (pictured above) of Bishop McGavick’s celebration of his Golden Jubilee, on June 11, 1937. The young strapping lad on the right holding the train of the Cappa Magna of William Cardinal Mundelein is our parishioner, Mr. William Welch, Sr. More photos of Bishop McGavick’s 50th anniversary of his priestly ordination may be found on page 19 of A Landmark of Faith, the Cathedral’s Sesquicentennial Book published in 2013, commemorating the Cathedral’s 150th anniversary as a parish.

date of marriage. In the case of a mixed marriage, the

non-Catholic party must arrange to receive instructions about the Catholic faith prior to the celebration of the wedding. Weddings are not ordinarily celebrated during Lent. Anointing of the Sick: Those who are seriously ill or have been sick for a long period of time should receive the Sacrament of the Sick and Holy Communion. Please call YOUR parish office to make arrangements. Visitation of the Sick: If you become homebound because of illness and would like to be visited, please call the Cathedral parish office.

The second surprise came by means of an email from the Curatorial Assistant of the Knights of Columbus Museum, located in New Haven, Connecticut. The Curatorial Assistant was seeking a photograph of the Cathedral’s stained glass (shown below) window depicting Fr. Allouez, as the museum is currently in the process of creating an exhibit on the French and Spanish Missions of North America.

ADDRESS CHANGES This past week the Cathedral updated over 35 mailing addresses courtesy of the Diocese of La Crosse, consisting of individuals and families of the Cathedral Parish who have recently moved. It is important to let the Cathedral know of address, telephone number, and email address changes as they occur. Or if you are planning to move out of the Greater La Crosse Area, Diocese or state, we would like to know so we can suspend mailings and keep our data base clean and up to date. If you are planning to move, please consider adding the Cathedral to your “to do” list of things to be checked off. Thank you!

BLOOD DRIVE AT ST. JAMES THE LESS Tuesday, January 19, from 12:00 pm until 5:00 pm, a Blood Drive will be held at St. James Church (1032 Caledonia Street) in Murphy Hall. Please call Linda Miles at 608/793-1268 to make an appointment.

RIGHT TO LIFE SIGNATURE AD The local chapter of Wisconsin Right to Life invites you to join with other prolife members of our community in making stating publicly our belief in the sanctity of all human life. To this end, a full-page “Signature Ad” will appear in the La Crosse Tribune on Sunday, January 24, two days after the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Please participate in this effort on behalf of our most vulnerable brothers and sisters who have no voice but ours! Signatures of those who would like to be included in the ad will be collected at Cathedral and St. James parishes on January 16 and 17. The ad will cost close to $4,000, so donations of $2 per person or $5 per family would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to sign the ad but will be out of town, please call Peggy Flottmeyer (781-1779) or Deacon Joe or Carol Richards (769-0098).

BIRTHRIGHT FUND RAISER The annual fund raiser for Birthright of La Crosse is coming up. On January 24 and 31, 2016, envelopes will be placed in the pews at Cathedral and at the entrances at St. James for your donations to Birthright. This will replace the baby bottles which you took home in previous years. Birthright is an international volunteer organization, with a La Crosse chapter since 1976, available to those with an unintended pregnancy to provide love, information, a gentle listening space and referrals as well as emotional and material support as needed. Further information may be found inside the envelopes about Birthright. Your pro-life support will be appreciated by mom’s and dad’s to be and their unborn children. Your donations can be returned at any time through February via the collection basket. (Checks should be made out to: Birthright of La Crosse.) Thank you for your help.
