The Stained-Glass Windows: A Dream Come True

Series written by Fr. Michael A. Van Sloun

Paul raises Eutychus, Acts 20:7-12. St. Luke continues his theme that the disciples of Jesus are to perform great and mighty deeds in his name. Jesus raised the widow of Nain’s son from the dead (Lk 7:11-17, Peter raised Tabitha from the dead (Acts 9:36-42), and Paul raised Eutychus from the dead. The year was 54 or 55 AD. Paul was 60 or 61. He was on his Third Missionary Journey (52-56 AD) and had returned to Troas (Troy) (Acts 20:6). Paul was preaching to a group that had gathered in a third-floor room. Eutychus, a young man, was sitting on the windowsill, sank into a deep sleep, fell from the ledge to the stone pavement below, and died (Acts 20:9). The scene depicts the empty window above with the ledge where Eutychus had been sitting as well as three of the lamps that were burning inside the room (Acts 20:8). Paul went downstairs to the body lying on the street (Acts 20:10a). Paul is dressed in his traditional red cloak, which has partially slipped to his left side, and his white tunic. Paul then “threw himself upon him” (Acts 20:10b) in a manner that resembles how the Prophet Elijah had stretched himself out over the widow of Zarephath’s son (1 Kgs 17:21) and how the Prophet Elisha laid upon the Shunammite woman’s son (2 Kgs 4:34), both who had died. Eutychus is dressed in deep blue, the symbol of darkness, mourning, and sadness, as he lays lifeless on the street, head hanging, hair dangling, and left arm drooping. Paul is shown extended over Eutychus’ body, his right arm underneath him and raising him slightly. And the boy came to life (Acts 20:12a) as had the widow of Nain’s son, Tabitha, the widow of Zarephath’s son, and the Shunammite woman’s son. The people were immeasurably comforted (Acts 20:12b) and God was glorified.

Please pray for the following individuals from our beloved community.

Prayers and sympathy of the parish are offered to the family and friends of …

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

First Sunday of Advent

Reflection by Sister Mary Anne Schaenzer, SSND

In the Collect prayer at the beginning of Mass, we

have a request that is both beautiful and challenging.

Grant your faithful, we pray, almighty God,

the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ

with righteous deeds at his coming,

so that, gathered at his right hand,

they may be worthy to possess the heavenly

Kingdom.

Imagine, running forth to Christ….

I know that not everyone has had a good “Father” or

“Dad” experience,

but some of us recall running to our Dad when he

came home from work,

and maybe wanting to tell him everything we did that

day, especially if it was good.

We are no longer children, and maybe it is difficult to

have that same enthusiasm.

Let us pray that during this Advent Journey we will

receive a grace to have the enthusiasm of a child

in our anticipation of the Second Coming of Christ.

That is a big desire!

Father, please give us the grace to want to have the

desire to run forth to meet your Christ.

Come, Lord Jesus!

Dear St. Stephen’s Community:

I love to share about the wonderful learning that is going on within the walls of St. Stephen’s Catholic

School. This past week I observed the 4th graders in Ms. Albarran’s gym class. The students started out

choosing which exercises to do based on their preferred color, animal, Marvel character, food, beverage,

etc. Next, they practiced overhand throwing at a moving object by playing a game called “Battleship”.

They took turns being pirates and captains. The game took up the entire area of the gym and I saw a lot

laughter and very winded children. The class ended by a child earning a “Player of the Day” award for

good sportsmanship, helping others, good listening skills, etc.

Let me now take you into Ms. Leider’s preschool classroom. I observed the students engaged in learning

through six stations. Four of the stations were student led and two were teacher led. In 40 minutes

children rotated through activities that involved looking through picture books, doing math problems

with manipulatives, matching colors on a turkey sheet, engineering shapes with building rings, and

artists using sand and shapes. Every preschooler was on task and engaged in the stations.

These are just two snapshots into classrooms this week. Imagine how much more exciting learning takes

place at St. Stephen’s every hour of every school day. I am so proud of our staff and students. They are

truly dedicated to teaching and learning!

Blessings,

Theresa Gunderson

School Principal

aprendizaje!

Bendiciones,

C.) y había regresado a Troas (Troya) (Hechos 20: 6).
