Wayne State has never been a more vibrant, a more engaged or a more influential university than it is today. It is part of a city that is on the verge of revitalization, and it must continue to be a leader in this effort. And because of where it is, who it is and what it does, Wayne State has an unprecedented opportunity to emerge as a national leader in public higher education in the years and decades ahead.

University Leadership

M. Roy Wilson, M.D., M.S. President M. Roy Wilson, M.D., M.S., was unanimously elected President of Wayne State University by the Board of Governors on June 5, 2013. As deputy director, Dr. Wilson led the development and implementation of an integrated system for planning, coordinating, and evaluating the NIH health disparities research portfolio, in collaboration with the NIH institutes and centers. He also co-chaired the NIH Common Fund programs: the Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity Initiative and the National Research Mentoring Network. Previously, Dr. Wilson was dean of the School of Medicine and vice president for health sciences at Creighton University, president of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and, concurrently, chancellor of the University of Colorado Denver and chair of the Board of Directors of University of Colorado Hospital. Immediately prior to joining the NIH, Dr. Wilson chaired the Board of Directors of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science and was acting president during part of that time. Under Dr. Wilson's leadership, the university regained full institutional accreditation and stabilized its finances. national organizations including the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, Coalition of Urban Serving Universities, American International Health Alliance, Association of Academic Health Centers, and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Dr. Wilson received his undergraduate degree from Allegheny College, an M.S. in epidemiology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School. His additional honors include the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Senior Achievement Award, the Distinguished Physician Award from the Minority Health Institute, the Herbert W. Nickens Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the NIH Director’s Award.

Strategic Plan Five specific goals result from Wayne State’s strategic vision for the university. These goals articulate its aspirations and provide a framework for the way in which its new plan will be translated into action. Wayne State University has pledged to:

• Promote an exceptional learning experience. • Improve the university’s stature as a nationally-

ranked research institution. • Nurture a strong and dynamic campus

community. • Sustain its role as an engaged university in an

urban environment. • Diversify and broaden the university’s funding

base. Wayne State intends to remain one of the nation’s most respected public research universities, and feels that these goals provide a way to make that happen. National recognition is not an end in itself; what matters most is how Wayne State’s progress as shaped by these goals will position the University to benefit its students and, ultimately, its city, state, nation and the world.

Overview: The Wayne State University Foundation The Wayne State University Foundation was established by the University’s Board of Governors in 2000 to develop a centralized means of encouraging and managing financial support by private sources. The foundation operates as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation and, though independent of the University, it participates as a partner with units of the institution in realizing Wayne State’s overall advancement objectives.

The foundation seeks to promote advocacy and generate meaningful financial support from private sources as an essential supplement to state appropriations, tuition and research-related income. Such private support allows the University to provide its students, faculty and scientists with opportunities for learning and discovery that otherwise would not be possible financially. Private gifts supply the critical margin that enables Wayne State to excel in its educational mission and to enhance its public service. The generous contributions of individuals, corporations and foundations are essential to the University’s ability to educate, discover and serve.

Pivotal Moments: Our Campaign for Wayne State University

Pivotal Moments: Our Campaign for Wayne State University celebrates the life-changing moments the University has helped ignite and creates new ones. and applied research. • Create fresh expressions of existing knowledge. • Engage through community service, enriching the culture and economy of Detroit and beyond.

These priorities are broad in their reach because Wayne State is broad in its mission. Wayne State is a comprehensive public urban research university with 13 schools and colleges. It has centers and institutes, tackling issues from citizenship and urban studies to early childhood education and aging. It has an economic impact of $2 billion. Location

Detroit, MI: Detroit is the most populous city in Michigan and the largest city on the United States–Canada border. It is a primary business, cultural, financial and transportation center in the Metro Detroit area, a region of 5.3 million people. It anchors the third largest economic region in the Midwest, behind Chicago and Minneapolis.

Known as the world's automotive center, "Detroit" is a metonym for the American automobile industry. Detroit's auto industry was an important element of the American "Arsenal of Democracy" supporting the Allied powers during World War II. It is an important source of popular music legacies celebrated by the city's two familiar nicknames, the Motor City and Motown. Other nicknames arose in the 20th century, including City of Champions, beginning in the 1930s for its successes in individual and team sport; The D;Hockeytown (a trademark owned by the city's NHL club, the Red Wings); Rock City (after the Kiss song "Detroit Rock City"); and The 313 (its telephone area code). Between 2000 and 2010 the city's population fell by 25 percent, changing its ranking from the nation's 10th-largest city to 18th. This resulted from suburbanization, industrial restructuring and the decline of Detroit's economic strength. Following the shift of population and jobs to its suburbs or other states or nations, the city focused on reestablishing itself as the metropolitan region's employment and economic center. Downtown Detroit has held an increased role as an entertainment destination in the 21st century, with the restoration of several historic theatres, several new sports stadiums, and a riverfront revitalization project. More recently, the population of Downtown Detroit, Midtown Detroit, and a handful of other neighborhoods has increased. The Governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder, declared a financial emergency for the city in March 2013, appointing an emergency manager. On November 7, 2014, Judge Rhodes approved the city's bankruptcy plan, allowing the city to begin the process of exiting bankruptcy. The City of Detroit successfully left Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy with all finances handed back to Detroit on December 11, 2014. Despite the city's recent financial issues, many developers remain unfazed by Detroit's problems. Midtown is one of the most successful areas within Detroit to have a residential occupancy rate of 96%. Numerous developments have been recently completely or are in various stages of construction. Midtown was recently named one of the country’s 10 best up-and-coming neighborhoods by USA Today.
