SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY

January 12, 2020

CENTERING THOUGHT

That New by Susan Rothbard

At the market today, I look for Piñata

apples, their soft-blush-yellow. My husband

brought them home last week, made me guess at

the name of this new strain, held one in his hand

like a gift and laughed as I tried all

the names I knew: Gala, Fuji, Honey

Crisp—watched his face for clues—what to call

something new? It's winter, only tawny

hues and frozen ground, but that apple bride

was sweet, and I want to bring it back to him,

that new. When he cut it, the star inside

held seeds of other stars, the way within

a life are all the lives you might live,

each unnamed, until you name it.

* = Those who are able, please stand.

Congregation responds in bold.

Cell phones ringing during worship will be collected

and given to middle schoolers.

APPROACHING GOD

* CALL TO WORSHIP

Ever – present God, we know you are with us at this time of worship.

In our praise, you are the note of joy;

in our praying, you are the still small voice:

in our listening, you are the word that hits home;

in our fellowship, you are the friendly hand held out;

in our call to serve, you are the source of inspiration.

With confidence and trust,

we will worship God.

* PRAYER OF CONFESSION Ruth Chadwick Moore

Gracious Creator, we spend so much time hiding our fear,

our anger, our anxiety, our addictions;

we imagine ourselves invulnerable.

In your mercy, uncover our brokenness, that we might be more truly known.

Sustaining Spirit, Great Physician,

you promise to receive us, wounded and welcomed, just as we are.

You bring life from dead ends. You heal our disease.

In your mercy, mend our brokenness, that you might be more truly known.

* SILENCE FOR PERSONAL PRAYER AND REFLECTION

* DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS

Sisters and brothers, the Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger,

and abounding in steadfast love.

Believe this good news:

In Jesus Christ, our stories are known, we are forgiven, and our lives are made new.

* GLORIA PATRI John Weaver

* SHARING THE PEACE (Worshippers may greet one another with words of Christ’s peace.)

The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

And also with you.

MUSIC IN WORSHIP

Today’s opening hymn, No. 401 “Here in This Place” (Gather Us In), was composed by American

Marty Haugen (born 1950) in the 1979. The hymn celebrates an “incarnational” understanding of God’s

presence in a physical place where people with flesh and bone come together in welcome. The hymn

names, in pairs, those who gather to worship God: “the lost and forsaken, the blind and the lame, the rich

and the haughty, the proud and the strong.” From all sorts and conditions of humanity, the community of

faith gathers to sing around word, water, bread and wine. In singing this hymn, we pray that the fire of

God’s love will make hearts that are meek and courageous, and lives that are holy and true.
