SELEX ES SWIM-BOX PLATFORM

The problem

• ATM systems interoperability • Information Systems Interoperability, especially in the ATM context, is a

complex topic that may be faced from different perspectives: systems, data and governance.

• System Wide Information Management (SWIM) covers primarily the syntactical, the semantic and technical interoperability levels of data interoperability perspective.

• Interoperability challenges • Fragmentation (e.g. the same needs may be covered by multiple solutions and

multiple technologies). • Risk for proliferation of point solutions. • “One size does not fit all” (heterogeneity in needs, operational context and

business).

The solution(s) • Technical Interoperability is faced by SWIM Technical Infrastructure (SWIM-TI)

aiming at enabling proper consumption and provision of ATM services

• A governance process takes all technical interoperability needs of the System of Systems (SoS) into consideration and segments these needs into smaller groups for each of which a satisfactory uniform solution can be defined

• Identified uniform solutions are named SWIM Profiles (Yellow Profile, Blue Profile and Purple Profile) and they represent appropriate mandated solutions including the required SWIM Technical Infrastructure features, adopted standards, configurations and Quality of Services.

Selex ES Swim-Box Platform

• It represents Selex ES realization of a SWIM Infrastructure instance – It supports (so far) SESAR SWIM Blue and Yellow Profiles

and (partially) Purple – It is composed by a number of components (i.e. libraries,

modules, executables) that can be packaged differently depending on the needs

– It is 100% Java based – (C)OTS based – It has been widely experimented (multiple SESAR

Validation Exercises, SESAR SWIM Demonstrations, ATC Global, WAC …) with multiple partners

Flexible packaging and deployment

• Various (optional) domain modules are already available (e.g. addressing Weather, A-CDM, Flight (ED-133, FIXM)) information exchange

• Depending on the needs and context the different components of the platform can be – Packaged as libraries for use into ATM Applications – Packaged as stand-alone executables – Packaged as J2EE Application running in a J2EE Container

• Multiple deployment schemas can be chosen depending on the needs/constraints
