DBQ Essay Review As we review HOW to structure a DBQ essay,

fill in your guided notes.

We will also use a student example essay to write down examples of HOW to create each part of the DBQ essay.

As we review each part of the DBQ, keep your graded essay out so you can compare your essay against the student example

Introduction What goes in the introduction?

A Thesis Statement! Student Example:

Early settlers moved to America for three reasons: political freedom, economic freedom, and religious freedom.

How many points/reasons does your thesis need to have? THREE!

Compare! Take a look at your essay. Did you

include an introduction with a thesis statement that had 3 points?

Body Paragraph One What do you start with?

A topic sentence STUDENT EXAMPLE: Economics is what

motivates people to work hard to move to new places and build new societies.

How do you use evidence? Cite the documents! STUDENT EXAMPLE: In document A, the

picture shows James Oglethorpe bringing debtors to Georgia. Many settlers who came to Georgia were prisoners who owed money to the King, but when they moved to Georgia, they were able to start a new life.

Compare! Did you start your paragraph with a

topic sentence? (this sentence should not mention or talk specifically about the document)

Did you use evidence from a specific document and cite the document?

Body Paragraph One How did you bring in outside information?

STUDENT EXAMPLE: Other settlers came to the 13 colonies to make money through trade and farming.

How did you support the thesis using your evidence (meaning, how does this help you answer the essay question)? STUDENT EXAMPLE: This proves that

colonists formed new societies for economic reasons because settlers came here escaping their debts and looking for new opportunities in response to their lack of money.

Compare! Did you bring in outside information?

Did you support the thesis with evidence? Did you explain clearly how the evidence helps you to answer the essay question?

Body Paragraph Two What do you start with?

A topic sentence STUDENT EXAMPLE: Many people wanted religious

freedom; therefore they moved or were sent to America to start a new life.

How do you use and describe the evidence? Cite the documents STUDENT EXAMPLE: In Document B the quote

describes how William Penn protected religious freedom in his new colony of Pennsylvania. In Document C, the picture shows Puritans practicing their religion freely. The Quakers of Pennsylvania and the Puritans of Massachusetts both moved to the colonies because they did not want to practice the religion of England (Anglicanism).

Body Paragraph Two How did you bring in outside information?

STUDENT EXAMPLE: The Quaker religion preached peace and tolerance and they believed in treating all people equally. The Puritans settled in Massachusetts. When they experienced the First Great Awakening, it inspired many Puritans to see everyone as equal under the eyes of God.

How did you explain POV? William Penn, the author of primary source Doc.

B, had the point of view of someone who had experienced religious persecution. In England, he was not able to practice his own faith, so he wanted to make sure that any colonist living in Pennsylvania would enjoy religious freedom!

Did you explain POV for document B? (remember, Doc. B is the only primary source we had—that is the only document you could use for POV)

Body Paragraph Two How did you support the thesis using your

evidence (meaning, how does this help you answer the essay question)? This proves that colonists formed new

societies in the 13 colonies for religious reasons because many religious groups, including the Quakers, Puritans, and Catholics, settled in America to practice their religion freely.

evidence? (meaning, did you explain how the document helps you to answer the essay question?)

Body Paragraph Three What do you start with?

A topic sentence STUDENT EXAMPLE: Another reason people

moved to America was for political freedom. How do you use evidence?

Cite the documents STUDENT EXAMPLE: In document D, the

article describes how Virginia voted to have a representative legislature where only white men who had land were able to vote.

Body Paragraph Three How did you bring in outside information?

STUDENT EXAMPLE: Americans created self-government like the Virginia House of Burgesses and the Mayflower Compact because they wanted a fair government where the people ruled through democracy.

How did you support the thesis using your evidence (meaning, how does this help you answer the essay question)? STUDENT EXAMPLE: This proves that people

moved to the colonies for political reasons because they wanted to govern themselves instead of having one ruler or king make all of the decisions.

Did you support your thesis using evidence?

Conclusion What do you restate in your conclusion?

Your Thesis Statement! What do you end with?

An explanation of why this information is important!

Compare! Did you restate the thesis in the final

paragraph? Did you explain why this information is

important or make a current events connection?

After you take the Unit 2 Test, you will have the rest of the class writing your DBQ rewrite. You may NOT bring in a rough draft or use any notes to help you.

If you do not finish your DBQ rewrite during class, you MUST attend tutoring on Wednesday after school to finish. Check the box at the top corner of your essay so I know if you are finished or if you will attend tutoring.
