MESSAGE FROM FR. JULIO WHAT SENSE DOES OUR SACRIFICE MAKE? Last week we saw that Lent is a time of spiritual growth; taking more care of the condition of the soul, in its food and health, through prayer, sacra-ments and works of mercy. Where does sacrifice fit into this? The word comes from the Latin sacro fac-to, sacred action, pleasing to God. Everything we do for the soul may involve sacrifice of the body that

has other tendencies. Moving through the soul and acting for its growth and health, often implies the denial of pref-erences of the human instinct, which is not attracted by the spirit, but by pleasures, ambition to have, power, prestige, luxuries, etc... This carnal instinct can lead us to fall into idolatries, addic-tions and attachments that go against the will of God be-cause they harm the health or life of the soul, and whoever wants to follow the path of Christ will have to cut them-selves off with those attachments to luxuries, to pleasures, to people, or to desires that displease God because they steal the freedom from His children, taking us out of the way of Christ. That detachment implies sacrifice. But love is also sacrifice, in essence, because by definition it is about putting the good of thy neighbor before one's own selfish interest. Just as 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 tells us Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, al-ways perseveres. This means that love is sacrifice, because it goes against the tendencies of our fallen nature to envy, greed, anger, the easy way, to impose their comfort or whim ... it is sacrificed to endure, to rejoice in the good of others, to not get carried away by anger or resentment, to endure, etc. Sacrifice is also required to give time and effort for others; the practice of CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY: Feed the hungry, Give the thirty to drink, Dress the naked, Welcome the foreigner, Visit and care for the sick, Visit the prisoners, Bury the deceased. OR SPIRITUAL WORKS: Give good ad-vice to those who need it, Teach those who do not know, Correct those who are in error, Comfort the sad, Forgive offenses, Patiently handle the defects of others, Pray to God for the living and the dead. Prayer, alms, and fasting are also another form of sacrifice, of leaving ourselves, our ego, moved by the word of Jesus, to be his disciples, giving priority to the good of the soul than to that of the body, or even at the cost of effort or bod-ily sacrifice, always motivated by LOVE. LORD, MAKE US PASSIONATE FOR LIVING THE MAXI-MUM GOOD OF OUR SOUL THAT YOU CAME TO GIVE US. FILL OUR HEART WITH YOUR LOVE.

MENSAJE DE PADRE JULIO ¿Y QUE SENTIDO TIENE EL SACRIFICIO?

La semana pasada vimos que la cuaresma es tiempo de crecimiento espiritual, poniendo más cuidado en la vida del alma, en su alimento y salud, mediante la oración, sacramentos y obras de misericordia. ¿Qué lugar tiene entonces el sacrificio? Como dice la palabra es sacro facto, acción sagrada, grata a Dios. Todo lo que hace-mos por el alma puede implicar sacrificio del cuerpo que tiene otras tendencias. El movernos por el alma y actuar para su crecimiento y salud, conlleva con frecuencia la ne-gación de las preferencias del instinto humano, que no se ve atraído por lo espiritual, sino por los placeres, ambición de tener, poder, prestigio, lujos, etc…

El instinto carnal puede llevarnos a caer en idolatrías, adic-ciones y apegos que van contra la voluntad de Dios porque perjudican la salud o la vida del alma, y el que quiere se-guir el camino de Cristo tendrá que cortar con esos apegos a lujos, a placeres, a personas, o a gustos que desagradan a Dios porque roban la libertad de hijos, sacándonos del ca-mino de Cristo. Ese desapego o desprendimiento supone sacrificio. Pero también el amor es sacrificado en su esencia, pues por defi-nición se trata de anteponer el bien del prójimo al propio interés egoísta. Como dice en 1 corintios 13,4-7:

El amor es paciente, es bondadoso. El amor no es envidioso ni jactancioso ni orgulloso. No se comporta con rudeza, no es egoísta, no se enoja fácilmente, no guarda rencor. El amor no se deleita en la maldad, sino que se regocija con la verdad. Todo lo disculpa, todo lo cree, todo lo espera, todo lo soporta.

Esto significa que el amor es sacrificado, pues va contra las tendencias de nuestra naturaleza caída a la envidia, avari-cia, ira, a lo fácil, a imponer su comodidad o capricho… es sacrificado para soportar, para alegrarse del bien de los demás, para no dejarse llevar por la ira o rencor, para so-portar, etc.

También el sacrificio se requiere para dar tiempo y esfuer-zo por los demás, en la práctica de las OBRAS DE MISERI-CORDIA CORPORALES: Dar de comer al hambriento, Dar de beber al sediento, Vestir al desnudo, Acoger el extranje-ro, Visitar y cuidar a los enfermos, Visitar a los presos, En-terrar a los difuntos. O LAS ESPIRITUALES: Dar buen conse-jo al que lo necesita, Enseñar al que no sabe, Corregir al que está en error, Consolar al triste, Perdonar las ofensas, Soportar con paciencia los defectos de los demás, Rogar a Dios por los vivos y los muertos. La oración, la limosna y el ayuno también son otra forma de sacrificio, de dejarnos a nosotros mismos, a nuestro ego, movidos por la palabra de Jesús, para ser sus discípulos, dando prioridad al bien del alma que al del cuerpo, o aun a costa del esfuerzo o sacrificio corporal, siempre motivados por su AMOR.

St. John of God (Feast Day March 8th)Having given up active Christian belief while a soldier, John was 40 before the depth of his sinfulness began to dawn on him. He decided to give the rest of his life to God’s service, and headed at

once for Africa where he hoped to free captive Christians and, pos-sibly, be martyred.

He was soon advised that his desire for martyrdom was not spiritu-ally well based, and returned to Spain and the relatively prosaic activity of a religious goods store. Yet he was still not settled. Moved initially by a sermon of Saint John of Avila, he one day en-gaged in a public beating of himself, begging mercy and wildly repenting for his past life.

Committed to a mental hospital for these actions, John was visited by Saint John, who advised him to be more actively involved in tending to the needs of others rather than in enduring personal hardships. John gained peace of heart, and shortly after left the hospital to begin work among the poor.

He established a house where he wisely tended to the needs of the sick poor, at first doing his own begging. But, excited by the saint’s great work and inspired by his devotion, many people began to back him up with money and provisions. Among them were the archbishop and marquis of Tarifa.

Behind John’s outward acts of total concern and love for Christ’s sick poor was a deep interior prayer life which was reflected in his spirit of humility. These qualities attracted helpers who, 20 years after John’s death, formed the Brothers Hospitallers, now a world-wide religious order.

John became ill after 10 years of service, but tried to disguise his ill health. He began to put the hospital’s administrative work into order and appointed a leader for his helpers. He died under the care of a spiritual friend and admirer, Ana Ossorio.

San Juan de Dios (Fiesta el 8 de marzo) Habiendo renunciado a la creencia cristiana activa mientras era soldado, Juan tenía 40 años antes de que la profundidad de su pe-caminosidad comenzara a caer sobre él. Decidió dedicar el resto de su vida al servicio de Dios, y se dirigió de inmediato a África, donde esperaba liberar a los cristianos cautivos y, posiblemente, ser mar-tirizado.

Pronto se le informó que su deseo de martirio no tenía una buena base espiritual, y regresó a España y a la actividad relativamente prosaica de una tienda de artículos religiosos. Sin embargo, todavía no estaba resuelto. Movido inicialmente por un sermón de San Juan de Ávila, un día participó en una paliza pública a sí mismo, supli-cando piedad y arrepintiéndose salvajemente por su vida pasada.

Fue internado a un hospital psiquiátrico por estas acciones, Juan fue visitado por San Juan, quien le aconsejó que participara más activa-mente en atender las necesidades de los demás en lugar de soportar dificultades personales. Juan se tranquilizó y poco después dejó el hospital para comenzar a trabajar entre los pobres.

Estableció una casa donde atendía las necesidades de los pobres enfermos, al principio rogando por su cuenta. Pero, entusiasmados por el gran trabajo del santo e inspirados por su devoción, muchas personas comenzaron a respaldarlo con dinero y provisiones. Entre ellos estaban el arzobispo y marqués de Tarifa.

Detrás de los actos externos de Juan de total preocupación y amor por los pobres enfermos de Cristo había una profunda vida de oración interior que se reflejaba en su espíritu de humildad. Estas cualidades atrajeron ayudantes que, 20 años después de la muerte de John, formaron los Brothers Hospitallers, ahora una orden religi-osa mundial. John se enfermó después de 10 años de servicio, pero trató de ocultar su mala salud. Comenzó a ordenar el trabajo ad-ministrativo del hospital y nombró un líder para sus ayudantes. Murió bajo el cuidado de una amiga y admiradora espiritual, Ana Ossorio.
