Settlers Farm Campus R-7 Term 1, Week 4, 22nd February 2018 Dear families, Thank you for your patience and assistance moving around our closed off main yard for the first few weeks of this term. The fences are have now come down and the students are now able to take advantage of our new under cover area for both learning and play times. It truly is an impressive structure as you can see in the photos. We are nearing the end of our STEM Works project and all of the upgrades have been well received by staff, students and community that have had the opportunity to see these areas. The builders at all times have been very accommodating and have tried their best to ensure minimal interruption to the school. The delay in sheeting for the outdoor learning area was unfortunately out of their control otherwise this would have been completed in January before the students returned to school. At our first Governing Council meeting for the year the following dates have been approved for this year’s Pupil Free Days and School Closures; Thursday 29 th March, Term 1 Week 9 – Pupil Free Day (attached to Sports Day on the Wed and Easter) Tuesday 12 th June, Term 2 Week 7 – Pupil Free Day (June long weekend) Monday 6 th August, Term 3 Week 3 – Pupil Free Day Friday 7 th September, Term 3 Week 7 – Pupil Free Day (week of Royal Show) Wednesday 28 th November, Term 4 Week 7 – School Closure (day after Summer Celebration) Hopefully this early information will help you plan around these dates. If care is needed our OSHC service operates for the full day on these dates. Our AGM for Governing Council is in 4 weeks on Monday 19 th March at 6:30pm in the staffroom. All members of the community are welcome as you do not need to be a member of Governing Council to attend this meeting. If you would like to be on Governing Council a nomination form will be coming home in a couple of weeks. You are more than welcome to nominate yourself on the form, or someone can nominate you. Governing Council is a great opportunity to be involved in decisions about strategic directions for the school, including finance and facilities. Meetings are semi-formal and offer the opportunity to be in the forefront of what is happening around the school. Tryout for the Festival Choir for our year 5 to year 7 students begins this week. Students have until the end of this term to decide if they want to remain in choir until the performance at Festival Theatre in September. This is a fabulous event each year. This year we are trialling a signing choir as well for the year 3 and year 4 students. Both choirs occur on a Wednesday: the senior choir is facilitated by Ira Henkel and the Auslan choir will be facilitated by Louise Nickson. I am very much looking forward to the performances during the year. At the beginning of each year we remind families about attendance expectations and procedures: School begins at 8:45am in the classroom. It is a DECD requirement that students not in class at 8:45am be marked as late when they arrive or absent if away. Many of our teachers open their classrooms before 8:45am to meet this expectation. The morning music is played at 2 minutes to 8:45am so that students have the time to travel back to their classrooms to begin the day. Students arriving late with their parents may go directly to the classroom until 9:30am. Students arriving late without a parent must come to the front office to be signed in for the day. Students should remain at school until 3:05pm which is the end of our school day. It is not acceptable, according to DECD attendance policies, for parents to pick students up early so that they can pick up other children from other sites. This is an attendance issue that we are obliged to report. On the odd occasion when it is unavoidable to make appointments for your child after school, it is part of DECD procedures that your child must be signed out at the front office before being collected from their classroom. Birthdays are also not deemed to be an acceptable excuse for non attendance. Hopefully this information provides clarity around attendance expectations. Settlers Farm Campus R-7 Term 1, Week 4, 22nd February 2018

Dear families,

Thank you for your patience and assistance moving around our closed off main yard for the first few weeks of this term.

At our first Governing Council meeting for the year the following dates have been approved for this year’s Pupil Free Days and School Closures; Thursday 29th March, Term 1 Week 9 – Pupil Free Day (attached to Sports Day on the Wed and Easter) Tuesday 12th June, Term 2 Week 7 – Pupil Free Day (June long weekend) Monday 6th August, Term 3 Week 3 – Pupil Free Day Friday 7th September, Term 3 Week 7 – Pupil Free Day (week of Royal Show) Wednesday 28th November, Term 4 Week 7 – School Closure (day after Summer Celebration) Hopefully this early information will help you plan around these dates. If care is needed our OSHC service operates for the full day on these dates.

Our AGM for Governing Council is in 4 weeks on Monday 19th March at 6:30pm in the staffroom. “I would like to thank Woolworths for all of this

amazing equipment. We are truly grateful. It has

been great doing the Woolworths stickers every

year as it is extremely beneficial for our school. It

helps make sure our school is a happy and safe

learning environment. It also makes sure we have

an updated set of equipment. We are very grateful

for this opportunity. Thank you.”

Kyla Lockwood (School Student Leader)

On Tuesday 20th February, Mike from Woolworths Paralowie delivered our Woolies Earn and Learn Prizes! Two students were chosen by their peers and teacher to

represent their class and collect the prizes. Everyone was extremely excited !! A BIG thank you again to the SFC families on an amazing job collecting the Woolies Stickers!!!

SCHOOL CROSSING

MONITORS

Recently Settlers Farm Campus took part in School Crossing Monitor Training conducted by

the South Australian Police. This involves students in years 5, 6 and 7 being trained by

Road Safety Educators from the SA Police Road Safety Section. After the training is

complete the student will receive a Certificate of Authority issued on behalf of the

Commissioner of Police which, under the Road Traffic Act authorises the student to work

as a school crossing monitor. The certificate authorises the student to stop traffic using a

stop sign, as well as give reasonable directions to pedestrians for the safe and efficient

movement of traffic at or on the crossing as is necessary.

The training involves learning how to safely stop vehicles at a school crossing and

perform safety assessments on when it is safe for children to cross the road (this in-

cludes asking the monitors to check that all vehicles have stopped prior to pedestrians

walking onto the crossing). The session also includes safe sign handling techniques and

positioning within the crossing.

It is extremely important that all people (including parents) use the crossings and

become good road safety role models, by following the School Crossing Monitor’s

directions, not only for their safety but the safety of all students and road users.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Thank you

V O U C H E R S P R O G R A M ?

The Sports Vouchers program is a

Government of South Australia initiative

administered by the Office for Recreation and

Sport. The program provides an opportunity

for primary school aged children from

Reception to Year 7 to receive up to a $50

discount on sports membership/registration

fees. The purpose is to increase the number of

children playing organised sport by reducing

cost as a barrier to participate in sport.

W H O I S E L I G I B L E F O R T H E P R O G R A M ?

All South Australian Primary School Aged Children, meaning if the child is attending or is eligible to

attend primary school. Remember it is ONE VOUCER for every primary school aged child per

calendar year. To find your nearest provider please use the ‘Find a Club’ tool.

How does the program work?

There are currently two methods of claiming a voucher. The method depends on the provider’s system.

Some sports and providers have online registrations, claiming the voucher has been integrated into their

systems. If the provider does not have the voucher integrated into their online registrations, you’ll need

to download the voucher. Once completed, take the voucher to an approved provider to receive a

discount on the fees when you register at the provider. Providers access the secure Voucher Portal to

redeem vouchers and receive reimbursement.
