Our book week theme this year was reading is my secret power! What does it mean when we say reading is my super power? It can mean different things for different people. Your reading super power might be finding information out about your favourite topic like dinosaurs or pug dogs. Reading might be your super power because you can escape into a different world and meet weird and wonderful characters. It might be your super power because by reading you can be the best learner that you can be because reading is so important in all of our subject and learning areas. We thank Christina, Colleen and everyone else who lead and participated in our Bookweek activities. Our library was transformed into a hub of reading activities and a set for Readers Theatre which was performed by students and staff. The library looked amazing and we enjoyed the many activities that delve into books this week. Decodable Readers We are pleased to announce the introduction of decodable books to our Reception unit. This is part of an ongoing focus on the Big 6 of Reading, in particular Phonological Awareness and Phonics. Decodable books are simple books which have been especially written for beginning readers. They are based on the letter sounds which have been introduced to students. At Settlers Farm Campus, these are the 44 English sounds introduced through Jolly Phonics. These books enable learners to continue practising to blend (read) and segment (spell) words in order to be able to automatically recognise words quickly and effortlessly. This enables learners to read independently, quicker and experience reading success. Thank you to Jackie, our Literacy Coach, for leading the use of decodable readers at SFC. SSO Week This week we celebrated SSO Week and acknowledged the wonderful work that all of our SSOs do to support our students, their learning and well-being. Our SSOs are of part of so many areas of our school including learning programs, curriculum support, in the office and library. We thank them for making SFC a great place to be! Staffing News We congratulate Lisa Simpson who has won the position of Maths Coach for the rest of 2019 while Brooke begins maternity leave. We wish Brooke all the best with the birth of her baby and busy times ahead. In term 4, Lisa will be teaching in K01 Monday to Wednesday with Ben Noske teaching the class on Thursdays and Fridays. Liam Wytkin will be teaching in D04 full time from week 9 this term to the end of the year. We welcome back Nicole Pavlou to the PE teacher role on Monday, Thursday and Fridays and Ben will continue teaching PE on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Baby news from Eleni At 2:22pm on the 14th of August 2019 Chris, Thomas and I welcomed our precious little boy to the world: our angel Vasilios Savva, weighing 3.41kg and 49.5cm. We are so overwhelmed with love and Thomas is already the best big brother to our Vasili. Dear Families,

Bookweek In week 5, we celebrated the wonders of reading with our bookweek activities and parade on Tuesday. Our book week theme this year was reading is my secret power! What does it mean when we say reading is my super power? It can mean different things for different people. Your reading super power might be finding information out about your favourite topic like dinosaurs or pug dogs. Sarah’s

Snippets

Some students have recently started some life

skills lessons with me to learn how to cook

nutritious meals. Our goal is to include a whole

lot of vegetables in the dish and make it yummy

and appetizing! I have even been presenting them with some unknown fruit and

vegetables for them to try and much to their surprise they liked almost all of them!

The picture above is the rainbow selection we tried in the first week.

Kids WILL eat vegetables if they are presented in a way that is appealing to them.

Nutrients found in vegetables are essential to maintain health and wellbeing. Cutting

vegetables into small pieces and mixing them in the main meal often works. Eating

raw (or even frozen) vegetables is a great habit and making delicious smoothies is

always a popular option. If your kids don’t like vegetables, don’t give up on them! Be

creative and have fun spending quality time cooking together. Get them involved

as early as possible, even my 3 year old loves mixing or pouring ingredients in.
