Shot Types

Medium close up. Slowly zooming outwards. Allows background to be identified as a pub. Introduces the main character, Shaun.

Over the shoulder shot. Signifies conversation taking place. Introduces Liz.

Cutaway shot. Introduces another of the main characters, Ed.

Three shot. Allows viewer to focus on the conversation taking place, and also signifies that Ed can be an annoyance to the other main characters.

Shot Types

Four shot introduces David and Dianne. Signifies all the characters know each other, however they are separated by the table. They may not get on well with one another.

Cutaway. Further signifies Ed’s intrusive nature.

Two shot, connotes David and Dianne are a couple.

Returns to conversation of main characters. Medium shot possibly signifies Shaun’s short attention span.

Editing

No transition in. Signifies Shaun may have been daydreaming, suddenly realises. First thing seen is the main character.

Liz’s takes are shorter than Shaun’s. Signifies Shaun’s lack of attention and taking time to answer.

Edited very much like a social realism, however the camera is tripod mounted..

Sound

Audio bridge. Music builds up, but subsides becoming more gentle background music when the scene begins. Becomes diagetic, being played in the pub. Ringing bell signifies Shaun waking up from his daydream.

Diagetic sounds coming from the gambling machine. Connotes that Ed gambles.

Mise-En-Scene

Shaun’s blank expression. Connotes his short attention span. Bar in Background signifies the scene is set in a pub.

Gambling Machine. Connotes Ed’s gambling.

Ed placed between Shaun and Liz. Signifies he can get in the way from time to time.

Mise-En-Scene

Many empty glasses on the table. Signifies the characters have had a lot to drink between them and been at the pub for some time.

Ed is much less smartly dressed than the other characters. Signifies he is a slob.
