What’s in a name??? Well, if you’re referred to as a “MR. SISTER” apparently there is a lot! The term “Mr. Sister” was coined about 15 years ago, when the National Board held a meeting in Petaluma, CA and the local lodge served a dinner in honor of the Board. The Petaluma Brotherhood members helped with the event, and jokingly referred to themselves as Mr. Sisters, and it stuck. Since that time, the Sisterhood opened the membership up to be non-discriminating, and we’ve had many men join in support of our organization, although we’ve heard that some have an absolute disdain to the term Mr. Sister. Guess you can’t blame them. We have plenty of ladies that joined the Danish Brotherhood, and we have many men that have joined the Sisterhood, all with very unique reasons, but mostly to support one another. The Danish Brotherhood had difficulties and in August of 1995 merged with the Woodmen of the World. The existing Brotherhood Lodges at that time continued, although they lack and miss the Danish leadership that once was with their own National organization. With all of that in mind, and seriously, because it’s just a name, but holds a lot of significance, we will make an effort to refer to the men in our organization as “Brothers”. The term “Brothers” and “Brotherhood” are not exclusive to the Danish Brotherhood, and as such, we can use it too. To sweeten the deal further, we’d like to offer up an idea for our Brothers. When we usually start a new lodge, the new lodge picks a name for themselves. We propose that new lodges, primarily made up of Brothers be instituted as Viking Lodges with another name attached that they choose such as “Eric the Red Viking Lodge. Of course with our non-discrimination policy, Sisters can join as well, and Brothers can still continue to join our Sisterhood lodges. All of our membership processes will remain the same, however our Viking Lodges will now have a National organization behind them once again. Additionally, the Sisterhood has the #300 Tivoli Lodge, which is made up of Individual Members, which generally don’t have a lodge close to where they live. It’s a virtual lodge that primarily relies on social media for interaction. We are proposing a Viking Lodge #301 to make our Brothers that wish to join as Individual Members have a place too. Neither of these options are offered to encourage Brothers to leave their current Sisterhood Lodge. However, in lieu of Danish Brotherhood Lodges folding, perhaps they want to consider instituting one of these new Viking Lodges (only needs 10 members to start a lodge) which may attract new and often younger members…after all Vikings are all the rage these days.Just a little something to think about.

Løkken is a beautiful sea-side town in the north of Denmark. It’s beaches are known all across the country. Along the beach are sand-dunes, swimming huts, and fishing boats. Fishermen still keep their boats on the beach and you can often see them fishing out in the North Sea.

Velkommen

Lauren C. Nielsen, Editor

Dear Sisters,

It’s hard to believe that this is already my sixth newsletter–halfway through the year! June is, of course, the month of Father’s Day. This month, I’d like to talk a bit about fathers and the part they play in our and my Danish heritage.

In Denmark, Father’s Day is always held on June 5th, also known as Denmark’s Constitution Day. In America, it is always held on the third Sunday in June. No matter when it is, it is definitely a holiday to be celebrated.

In Denmark, surnames are often derived from a father’s first name, with the addition of “-sen” on the end. My own name is no different. Back in my lineage, there was a Niels and his descendents continued his line with the name of Nielsen. I also have many Larsens, Jensens, Christensens, Andersens and more in my family tree!

The cover photo this month was taken on the beaches of Løkken, Denmark. It’s a very special photo to me as my father took me to Denmark for the first time in 2007, which is when he took this photo. And we were visiting Løkken because my father’s father’s (my paternal grandfather) side of the family comes from Løkken. It was a cool and windy day in mid-August, but our cousin brought us there to see the town and the shores of the North Sea, to see one of the places where we came from.

Be sure to thank your fathers (and your mothers!) for giving you so much, and of course for giving you that wonderful Danish connection!

And an added tidbit–this will be our first issue to be released digitally! We are doing a test-run of a digital version in addition to the print version, so send us your thoughts and feedback!

Send stories, thoughts, comments, historical tidbits, and questions any time! Until next time...

News from Lodge #100, Marlette, MIKatherine Lodge #20 has had a very busy spring! We were able to finish out April with a great Bake Sale to raise funds for our scholarships. We are already deep into planning for the next Bake Sale and ᴁbleskiver Breakfast on November 6th and would love to see all of our sisters there from any lodge!

In place of our April meeting we attend-ed the Jens Jensen presentation in Racine at the Golden Rondelle in which two of our newest sisters were presenters. We will be celebrating the 4th of July this year with floats in the Racine and Kenosha parades! Keep your eyes peeled for a red mustang! We are lucky enough to have Vite Andersen, her daughter Majbritt Andersen-Stew-art, and her granddaughters Devin and Danika Stewart all in the Kenosha parade: 4 generations of members! Racine will be represented by our executive board and will be live broadcast on T.V.

News from Lodge #184, Spring is here.At our February meeting we welcomed a Rota-ry Club exchange student, who spent a year in Denmark 2014-2015 and fell in love with Den-mark. She stayed at three different host families and went to Stenhus Gymnasium in Holbaek and she learned to speak danish. We enjoyed hear-ing of all her positive experiences.

In March we met at our Mr.Sister Gary Jensen’s warehouse, a place that doubles as a huge museum of Danish art, posters, memorabil-ia and artifacts a truly amazing place, where you can spend hours exploring and finding interest-ing stuff.

For our April meeting we brought our

Amber jewellery and learned about the origin, mythology and history of Amber. Attached are photos of the group at Gary’s in March and one of sisters wearing Amber jewel-lery in April.

Our sister Kim Judge told us about her mother Joyce Houck, also a member of our lodge, who now lives in Florida, where she has been a very active member of the Elk’s Lodge since joining 7 years ago. She has worked in the kitchen, been waitressing and helping out wher-ever needed, caring and sharing, driving people, mentoring etc. and the Elk’s recently presented her with a plague naming her Elk of the year. This will be no surprise to anyone who knows Joyce, this lady does not do anything half way.Joyce has been a Sisterhood member since join-ing Lodge #100 in 1982 and she was one of the founding members of Lodge #184 in year 2000 continuing as a dual member of both lodges.

Joyce was vice president in Marlette, Lodge #100 for 9 years in the 80s and 90s and president 1990-92.Joyce also served on the National Board for 8 years, as Vice President for 4 years 1999 -2003.She truly is a great and committed lady and we congratulate her on the Honour of being named Elk of the year 2016, attaching a photo of Joyce receiving the award.

Danish Sisterhood News, June 2016 6

Greetings fellow members of the Danish Sisterhood of America! My name is Allan Johnsen and I’m the current president of the Christine Lodge #1 out of Negaunee, Michigan. I’m a Danish citizen who married a girl from a little town in Michigan’s U.P. called Houghton and who has spent the past 19 years living in said area. I got involved with the local lodge while I was still a student at Northern Michigan University where I was pursuing a history degree that had an emphasis on immigration.

The area where we lived had been greatly influenced by the Finns, Swedes and Norwegians. After nearly a decade of living here the Dane in me was getting decidedly tired of hearing about their many accomplishments. Where were the Danes? There had to have been some of them who ventured this far North! I knew full well from my studies that the Danes came in far fewer numbers than their other Scandinavian counterparts and that they had a tendency to intermingle with the above mentioned

Discovering the Hemmingsen Diarynationalities, so finding some of them might prove difficult.

In the city of Marquette where we live, I had approached several local historians with the following question; “I’d like to highlight the influences that the Danish immigrants have had on this area. Are there any note-worthy Danes around these parts?” I usually got laughed at and they all told me that there were only two that came to mind. The first family had left their mark by being the proprietors of the town’s first brothel and family number two ran a bar downtown that had been the site of countless gambling/fighting operations. So apparently, if I wanted to explore the Danish heritage in this area I would have to dig through the arrest records in NMU’s archives. However, I didn’t give up and kept digging. After a few other failed attempts at finding some other Danes in the area, I came across a single reference online to something referred to as the Hemmingsen Diary. It was allegedly a diary left behind by an immigrant couple who came to Negaunee and founded a relief organization for Danish immigrants in the area. Jackpot!!

My son, my wife and I all joined and have been members ever since. The diary had been on loan to the national board and made its way back to the U.P. where I began working on translating the text. The text was written by Niels Hemmingsen who was the husband of the founder of the Danish Sisterhood of America. A beautifully hand written account chronicling a cornucopia of different topics relating to his time in Denmark. Local customs relating to such areas as funerals, baptism, weddings, superstition, etc. along with a wealth of information about his family going back to his grandparents. He wrote extensively about their motivations for leaving Denmark, their

journey as well as their time together here in the U.S. and the creation of the organization to which we now all belong. I thought for a long time about how one might accomplish the task of getting this information to as many people as possible and I decided to make it all available online for your viewing pleasure.

Our lodge has a blog http://negauneed-anishsisterhood.blogspot.com/ as well as a facebook page, Christine Lodge #1, Dan-ish Sisterhood. The blog post will also post automatically to the facebook page in order to ensure that as many people as possible have some sort of access to it. I would like to invite all of you to check it out and feel free to contact me either through email; [email protected] or via Facebook with any questions or concerns you might have. Perhaps you want me to go into further detail or explain something which I would absolutely love to. The only thing left for me now is to hope that you all enjoy traveling through these pages as much as I have.

The 67th Pacific Northwest District Convention Report

The 67th Pacific Northwest District Convention sponsored by Lodge 348 was held in Eugene, Oregon on April 8 – 10, 2016. It was a wonder-fully thought-out event. Those who wished to participate met early on Friday, 4/8/16 for a golf tournament at Oakway Golf Course. Convention registration, meetings, coffee/social hours and dinners were held during the weekend at the Valley River Inn in Eugene. The Sisterhood District Officer Board Meeting began at 12:30 p.m. The Joint Sister-hood and Brotherhood Convention opening took place from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. As people hustled to find their way to the opening meet-ings, followed by the business meetings, there was time for people to peer at the various items for sale, raffle prizes, and check out the Sister-hood-sponsored Helene’s Boutique. Amid the search for various treasures and delicacies avail-able for sale as fundraisers at the convention, guests were readily able to find Sisterhood and Brotherhood members to spend time with and catch up in the hallways. The yearly conventions are a time when people connect who otherwise never see each other. One Sisterhood member marveled that she was able to sit and have breakfast with some

of the members she only sees once a year at conventions, “Normally our paths never cross because we live far from each other, but this weekend I was able to enjoy the Saturday and Sundays bunches with Brotherhood and Sister-hood friends from Seattle.” The event continued to beautifully unfold from Friday throughout Saturday evening. The no-host socials included an open bar, a multi-tude of snacks, and an ingenious array of Danish licorices and chocolates. The entire weekend of meetings, social hours and meals were an oppor-tunity for members to connect with old friends and to make new friends. Meals provided for the convention proved to be quite good. Ev-erywhere members looked they could see the beautiful artwork designed by Eugene Lodge President, Joan Cavin (Joan is an artist), and other artistic attention to detail provided by the other various Eugene members. For the Danish Sisterhood, the meetings were a time of fast-paced business in a fun-filled environment. Sisters discussed various choices and decisions for the upcoming year. One par-ticular treat for the Sisterhood included a special presentation by National Board Vice-President Julie Morrison.

Saturday’s meetings marked the passing of the torch in Sisterhood District leadership: President Jannet Tricarico was teary-eyed as she thanked the board members for their support throughout the last two years. Jannet provided gifts to the board members and board support staff (Chap-lin, Historian, Publicity Chair) as a gesture of love, thanks and friendship. Meetings over the week-end focused on the role of new leadership and plans for the rest of the year. This year’s convention hosted various entertainment throughout the weekend: physical comedy performed on a unicycle and with plenty of juggling by Danish-born Henrik Bothe; Guest speaker Henrik Fogh Rasmussen spoke on “Why

the Happiest Danes Live in America”; music by the Gus Russel Trio, and guest saxophonist An-dreas Toftemark from Copenhagen. A time of fun, fellowship, good friends, and wonderful food—interspersed with prizes and raffle drawings, and draped in artistic flair—made the 67th Pacific Northwest District Conven-tion a success on multiple levels. The Eugene Lodge 348 is to be commended on its leader-ship and dedication in making this convention one that will be remembered fondly for years to come.

The Midwest District Convention ReportGalena, Illinois, April 29-30, 2016

The 60th Danish Brotherhood and Danish Sister-hood Midwest District Convention was a success! Held over two days on April 29th and 30th in historic Galena, Illinois, the convention took place at the DeSoto House Hotel. On Friday night, brothers and sisters gath-ered for a reception at the hotel, complete with appetizers, drinks, and much comraderie. Saturday morning greeted Sisters with grey skies and rain, but all were smiling once inside! The Brotherhood and Sisterhood chapters met first thing in the morning for coffee, kringle, and the Opening Ceremony. The Opening Ceremony consisted of the singing of both the Danish and American Na-tional Anthems and details about the convention weekend. After the ceremony, the Brotherhood and Sisterhood broke off into their own separate meet-ing spaces. The Sisterhood meeting began with a small memorial for members who have passed away since last convention. A candle was lit for each member. We also signed beautiful cards to be sent to all those sisters that are ill or in nursing homes. The Midwest District Convention was hon-ored to have National Board Secretary Glenda Madrid join us as a guest. Glenda gave a wonderful presentation about the status of the Sisterhood and news from the National Board. The meeting also covered the reading of the Financial Report, decisions on By-law changes, and voting on new officers. The current officers were:

Past President: Jane Blackman, Lodge #15President: Bente Rasmussen, Lodge #4Vice President: Marsha Blackman, Lodge #15Sec/Treasurer: Karen Vig-Keathley, Lodge #41st Trustee: Kirsten McVey, Lodge #202nd Trustee: Bette Lasch, Lodge #203rd Trustee: Diane Duhn, Lodge #4

Sec/Treasurer: Karen Vig-Keathley, Lodge #41st Trustee: Meta Petersen, Lodge 152nd Trustee: Marge Orth, Lodge #203rd Trustee: Lauren Nielsen, Lodge #20

Next year, the district luncheon will be held by Katherine Lodge #20, date and location to be determined. The next Midwest District Convention will likely be held again at the end of April 2018. The Convention was wrapped up with a combined banquet of both the Brotherhood and Sisterhood. Cocktail hour preceded the banquet and included the induction of new officers for both organiza-tions. Dinner was a grand feast with much food, entertain-ment, and even akvavit! A historical re-enactor of President Grant attend-ed and gave an account of President Grant’s life and home in Galena. Betty Hansen Educational Grant: Eligibility, Timeline and Deadlines

The Danish Sisterhood of America is very proud of its Scholarship and Grant Program. We have four different scholarships, one of which presently offers six awards per year, and one grant program offering ten awards annually—five are given in February (the “January Round”) and five in September (the “August Round”). These scholarships and grants are available to members of the Danish Sisterhood and their children, regardless of age.

Our Scholarship and Grant Program is made possible through generous endowments and memorial funds and are be-ing supplemented by donations from individual members, lodges, and districts of the Danish Sisterhood. No membership dues are used to support these scholarships and grants.

At the time when the scholarship and grant funds were established, the donors—all with strong ties to the Danish Sis-terhood—made stipulations regarding eligibility, to which we are legally bound to adhere.

The longevity of the scholarship and grant programs is dependent upon investment returns as well as donations. Such donations are crucial to the program’s continuance—and are very much appreciated.
