EUCHARISTIC ADORATION by Rev. Larry Rice, CSP

Eucharistic adoration is devout prayer before the Body of Christ

in the Eucharist, displayed outside of the context of the Mass.

Once a very widespread practice, it became less popular after the

Second Vatican Council, which placed a greater emphasis on the

active participation of the faithful in the liturgy itself. The origins

of eucharistic adoration are not very well-known.

One of the first references to reserving the Blessed Sacrament for

adoration is in the life of St. Basil the Great in the late fourth cen-

tury. It is said that St. Basil divided the consecrated eucharistic

bread into three parts during the liturgy at his monastery. One part

he consumed himself, the second was given to the monks, and the

third portion was placed in a golden dove suspended above the

altar. It seems likely that this reserved portion was kept for those

who were unable to attend the liturgy because of illness or travel.

The practice of eucharistic adoration among laypeople is thought

to have begun in Avignon, France, on September 11, 1226. King

Louis VIII, having just won a victory over the Albigensians,

asked that the Blessed Sacrament be placed on display at the

Chapel of the Holy Cross. This exposition was so popular that the

local bishop asked to have it continued indefinitely. Pope Hon-

orius III gave his assent, and the practice continued there, nearly

uninterrupted, until the French Revolution in 1792.

Although some liturgical theologians find eucharistic adoration

somewhat at odds with the purpose and practice of the Eucharist

at Mass—that is to say, Communion—in recent years eucharistic

adoration has become more popular, particularly among younger

Catholics. The longest-running eucharistic adoration in the U.S. is

with the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in La Crosse,

who have been praying nonstop for more than 130 years.

Catholic Car Talk/Activities Here are some activities to help your family further

reflect upon the Mass readings:

about how he or she can communicate his or her angry feelings in a

positive way.

· Participate in the parish reconciliation service during Lent with your

family. Remind children that God always loves us and is always

willing to forgive us.

· Talk about ways your family can show respect for God’s house.

Discuss the following questions: What should I do in God’s house?

· Help family members learn about ways we honor God in church.

Scrutinies Ordinarily, the Scrutinies are prayed by the elect, those folks in RCIA preparing to enter the Church this Easter. These prayers serve as a reflection akin to an examination of conscience. As we did last year, we are praying the Scrutinies as a parish at all Masses of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent. The reason is to express our spiritual solidarity with the elect: we are all sinners and we are all confronted with our need for the mercy of Christ.

Hearing Assistance is available on request for Sunday liturgy. We have a handful of devices to aid those who find it difficult to hear at Mass. Just ask a greeter, Mass coordinator, or the parish liturgist.

Help with Soiree Interested in helping make the Soiree On The Structure a fantastic event for parishioners? Contact Warren Franke [email protected] to make suggestions or to volunteer in the effort.

For people around the world who are hungry, especially children,

that they receive the nutritious food they need to live healthy,

productive lives.

For farmers around the world who work to improve their harvests

while preserving natural resources, that they may support their

families through the fruits of the land.

For those who are forced from their homes by war, natural

disasters and other tragedies, that they may be welcomed with

love and hospitality in new and foreign lands.

For people around the world who struggle to provide enough food

to meet their families’ daily needs, that they may overcome the

challenges of hunger and poverty.

For our community of faith, that we may deepen our relationship

with Christ by recognizing his face in the faces of our brothers

and sisters in need.

www.crsricebowl.org

Show me a church that is reaching out through its ministry, and I

will tell you that it is a church rich and alive. We can only reach

outside of our walls if there is an “inward richness” and inward

richness is nourished by the reaching out. It is the Body of Christ

in its "breathing in" and "breathing out." Without these two

working together, the Body of Christ dies. Are we timid? Let us

not forget that our mission is God's very own mission and, to use

a line from a country song, "God ain't finished with us yet." May

our hearts beat with gratitude, hospitality, overflowing generosity

and discipleship—all growing day by day. Bobby LeBlanc
