The Brief

In the decade prior to 2012, Newham experienced a very high birth rate leading to rapid growth in the number of children living in the area. This resulted in the need for a significant expansion of primary school places. These children are now reaching secondary school age and require a similar increase in secondary school provision.

Regeneration and significant new homes in Newham will to create additional secondary pupils adding to the need for additional secondary school places. Without expansions and or new schools the projected demand for places by 2022 indicates a deficit of over 2,000 places. That is equivalent to around 14 forms of entry or 70 additional general classes and associated specialist spaces.

Design Drivers:

• Expand the school from 7FE to 9FE (1050 students to 1350) and create an internal ‘heart’ space

• Provide high quality teaching accommodation for the expanded school to build on it’s academic success

• Improve internal circulation and accessibility within the existing building

• Provide additional and enhance existing student external amenity area

• Improve connectivity between the school sites
