From the Desk of our Pastor
Motherhood during Covid-19 A five year old girl is sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly notices that her mother has several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast to her brunette hair. She looks at her mother and inquisitively asks: "Why are some of your hairs white, mom?” Mom replies, “Well every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.” The little girl thought for a while and then asked, “Mom, how come all of grandma’s hairs are white?”
Today we honor the special people we call moms, which invites us to show our appreciation in that many of us have inflicted white hairs upon these women. This year Mother’s Day takes a unique approach in that restaurants and churches remain empty as liturgies are livestreamed into homes and eating establishments offer take out as a way to treat mom. Electronic devices will be used to share time with mothers to communicate the love that is held in our hearts so that these women grasp thankfulness for the count-less ways they extend themselves for our happiness. Mother’s Day also invites us to prayers of thanksgiving for mothers and grand-mothers called home to God. In my prayers I also include women who wished to be mothers and are not, moms who have lost chil-dren, women who have adopted the motherless, those who take on the role of motherhood but are not recognized by that title as well as those who have lost pregnancies.
Mothers provide a place we call home; they shape our faith life and discover ways to extend care in impossible situations. The scriptures for this Sunday remind us that spreading the word of Christ did not go smoothly in that the theological insights of the Christian community were not invented overnight (Acts 6:1-7). Like the mission of the early church, the circumstances of Covid-19 calls mothers to care and entertain their children under “stay at home” regulations. In addition, Covid-19 has added the obligation for moms to see that children are homeschooled while balancing careers and other home responsibilities. Homeschooling multiple chil-dren places over and above chores of motherhood that were never anticipated at the beginning of the school year. Last week a moth-er in the parish described to me the way she enjoys extra time with her children, yet even though schools are sending children class-work via email, apps, and websites, moms still have to find a way to teach their children under these stressful circumstances. The first letter of Peter which is read at mass this weekend (1 Peter 2:4-9) invites us to be “living stones” that make up a “spiritual house.” Mothers are those living stones who secure family togetherness.
The blessings within motherhood are multi-faceted in that a mother’s capacity to love is immeasurable in that she loves her children unconditionally and primes them through ways that quiet some of the agitations within life as moms are always ready to listen to the burdens of loved ones expecting little in return. In an article titled What Mom Taught Me, the creator and star of the musical, Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda, makes it known that the best advice his mom gave him was, “This too shall pass” which he sees as guidance that gets him through not only the bad times but also through good times. How important those words are during Covid-19 which has restructured many tasks of motherhood. Moms never retreat from the virtues that makes them good mothers; no matter the age of a mother she maintains deep love, concern, and care for her children. This opens windows to the distinctive feminine contributions in both society and church made by women who share their feminine qualities. The goodness of these women should never be underestimated as it is essential to recog-nize them for the contributions they make through gentle qualities that shine in careers, relationships and ministries which influence so many people. Happy Mother’s Day!
In Christ’s Love, Fr. Bob

MUSIC MINISTRY Music Ministry Sends Love to All Our Mothers
Mother’s Day Blessing
All-loving God, we give you thanks for mothers young and old, living and deceased. Bless young mothers, who give life and tend to the needs of their chil-dren. May they be blessed with patience and tender-ness to care for their families and themselves with great joy. Bless our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us. May they continue to guide their chil-dren in strong and gentle ways. Bless mothers who are separated from their children due to war, poverty, or conflict. May they feel the loving embrace of our God who wipes every tear away. Bless women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and compassion. Welcome mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers who are no longer with us and have gone to their rest. These are women who have nourished us with your love and live forever in our memory. May they be eternally rewarded in God’s gar-den of joy. Amen.
Thank you for your Generosity!
