So far I would say I have really enjoyed working for the company and I have learnt a lot, as well as realising that I made the right choice to go down the apprenticeship route.”

Kirklees College – Case Study Lean Organisation

Lesley Holdsworth of Kirklees College said:

“Our processes and procedures needed to change. It was great to be involved in the project and to find some really good ways of doing things better. We are the people who do this day to day and we have made life better for ourselves.”

Kirklees College identified the need to implement a new organisation structure to improve staff utilisation and their performance against key Learning and Skills (LSC) metrics.

They operated two teams responsible for managing their contact with employers (14 – 19 and 19+) but given historical, geographical and physical constraints they occupied different offices and operated different processes.

The college joined together with Business Impact UK Ltd. Kirklees College’s need was to enable their staff to recognise and implement improvement activities and to test the application of Lean in a learning and skills environment.

They delivered a series of Kaizen workshops (to identify the potential improvements using process mapping tools) and undertook a review of their roles, culture and behaviours to generate their improvement plan.

The improvements achieved for Kirklees College included:

• Improved delivery effectiveness (>40%) from the baseline process measurement

• A 10% improvement in staff efficiency

• Improved performance within the Compliance & Partnerships Team (<5% error rate)

• Higher office space utilisation (2 offices into 1)

• A 15 point improvement in the 5S/5C score

• Standardised processes and training given to those in newly defined roles

• Higher staff morale

Programmes delivered:

BIT (Business Improvement Techniques) NVQ Level 2

BIT (Business Improvement Techniques) NVQ Level 3

We worked with Arla Foods at their Oakthorpe Site in Palmers Green, London from May 2009 until April 2011 and within that time more than 70 learners completed their BIT Level 2. Arla were extremely pleased with our progress and the changes that had taken place onsite since we started delivering their programmes. Our contact at Arla foods; the Continuous Improvement Co-ordinator believed the changes had been as a direct result of the programmes that we delivered there. He was also fully involved in the programme and worked towards his Level 3 having completed Level 2. He said the most valuable factor to come out of the training was to see the learners engage and start to utilise their new skills after the NVQs were completed. This was a great help to the company as learners also started to set their own personal development plans and continuous improvement was an objective that everyone was being set. A key improvement that was made was to put a procedure in place to ensure a piece of equipment (Cyroscope) no longer needed to be calibrated and the parts replaced every month. This simple improvement has saved Arla over £700 per month since July 2009; which equates to more that £20,000 since the programme started. Since this project was completed in the laboratory, all equipments that are used now have had similar care points introduced. In the Cream Department, one of the issues raised was around time being wasted when labels ran out on the labelling machine. The team looked at different ways of solving this and came up with an effective use of visual aids and hourly checks to ensure the labels never ran out. They then attached a Perspex top to the labeller and when the reel goes into the “red”, the operator, who has to carry out hourly checks replaces the reel and ensures the line continues to run. This has saved over 2 hours per day of “downtime” that was caused by labels running out. The improvement teams also looked at organising labels in the milk filling plant and organising the engineering materials. This has saved them time when looking for parts and also ensures that the labels are kept in the correct condition. Due to these small improvements Arla have also passed inspections by Tesco, Co-op and Sainsburys.

BIT (Business Improvement Techniques) NVQ Level 2

BIT (Business Improvement Techniques) NVQ Level 3

As the brewing industry consolidates within the UK through brewery closures due to the economic downturn, we have set our stall out to be a contact brewer of major brands. To be successful within this very competitive arena, we have to be capable of demonstrating to our prospective and existing clients that we will take the utmost care in producing their valuable brands to their exact expectations. To meet this need we have invested more than £4 million in the brewery infrastructure however it does not end there. Camerons’ recognise that the development of its staff is crucial to ensure that industry best practice is adopted within the brewery. Through involving Business Impact as our main training provider, we have embarked on a fundamental organisational development programme that encapsulates the Lean Manufacturing ethos. 50 employees have gained an NVQ level 2 in Business Improvement Techniques which was delivered by Business Impact through a suite of classroom workshops and workplace applications. I’ve been impressed by the standard of tuition and expertise in nurturing students along, many of which have not studied in many years. The next phase of the training programme commenced with the remaining 50 employees being involved. We also suggested a Level 3 course as a follow up and were inundated with volunteers! What did the courses deliver? That of course is best answered by one of our customers! Comments from a customer site visit: “The improved work standards and communications are also a sign that you are openly working to a more organised and structured approach. The use of displays for the Lean audits as well as the work instructions show that these are actively in use with the teams - and are not just something being discussed in the offices. It really has been good to track the changes over the last year, but the visual impact of the tour yesterday really helped enforce the higher standards being implemented.” Billy McKee Commercial Director Cameron's Brewery

Programmes delivered:

BIT (Business Improvement Techniques) NVQ Level 2

BIT (Business Improvement Techniques) NVQ Level 3

Auto Marine Cables needed a training provider with particular expertise in the manufacturing sector. They chose Business Impact UK Ltd (BIUK) to deliver and support their BIT (Business Improvement Techniques) programme.

Giving our employees practical hands on training, learning the necessary improvement skills, supported by a recognisable qualification was the missing link in our improvement strategy; which is now complete. Our employees needed to realise their potential to continuously contribute to the identification and implementation of these types of improvements. The BIT NVQ qualification was chosen to drive through this improvement strategy in order to maximise the benefits of the investment in skills development.

After an initial trial run with 6 operators, BIUK have assisted with training everyone on-site. BIT Level 2 underpins this education process with notable improvements not only in savings coming through targeted improvement projects, but also in day to day activities. Thinking this way is becoming a way of life. BIUK delivered a training programme in line with the production requirements, minimising the disruption to the business.

The success and benefits have exceeded my expectation, which gives us a great platform to build upon for the future. I have recommended BIUK to other companies that are starting out on this journey.

Quotes from company contacts:

“Being in a supervisory role, the Lean manufacturing training programme has provided me with a sound basis for the production and implementation of successful process improvement ideas. This in turn leads to the encouragement of all staff members to become involved in further improvements that they know will achieve results.”

Andy Gardner, Production Text Manager, Selex Communications

“SELEX Communications Ltd has been using the Business Improvement Techniques NVQ course as a key element of our training strategy for our operations staff. The course dovetails very effectively with our Lean manufacturing strategy. So far 16 of our people have achieved NVQ Level 2 and this year we plan to put 13 through Level 3 training as well as running another Level 2 course. The course has been very popular with the trainees who have enjoyed the mix of theory and practical hands-on projects many of which have provided sustained process improvements for our business. In addition the methodology advocated by the trainers has become the basis for our own in-house Lean improvement team formed from the course graduates. Business Impact’s trainers are both knowledgeable and professional and I would have no hesitation in recommending this training scheme.

Andy Forrester, Efficiency Improvement Manager, Selex Communications

“Chandlers BMW have been working with Business Impact for 8 months and we have placed 8 Apprentices with them in a variety of different roles. Business Impact have been instrumental in sourcing fantastic candidates who bring a real sense of enthusiasm to our business. Our Apprentices have the opportunity to learn about the entire Company and how their job fits into the bigger picture. We think that the learning programmes and support provided by Business Impact prepare the Apprentices for a strong future with our Company. We look forward to working with Business Impact to create career paths for more aspiring individuals who wish to work in our business.”

Group HR Consultant

I can highly recommend Business Impact as a provider of the NVQ programme. As a training provider they understand the problems experienced in rolling out such a programme in a highly skilled manufacturing process environment. They have been flexible in arranging courses to suit production and also adapting the course to suit the organisations requirements. The two trainers used have both been friendly, approachable, knowledgeable and professional with excellent feedback received from those who’ve already passed the course. Guardian Print Centre Manchester is looking forward to continuing its partnership with Business Impact as a training provider.

Apprenticeship Success Story:

Furniture Clinic have a polished approach to training and apprenticeships with Business Impact

A Burnopfield based furniture repair specialist are reaping the benefits of essential team leadership training and new

apprentices sourced through Business Impact.

The national business with headquarters in the North East recognised the benefits of working with Business Impact

immediately, as they had multiple training and development requirements, alongside an active programme of apprentice

recruitment.

Business Impact initially worked with Furniture Clinic to develop Team Leader Training as the company expanded, and it

was recognised internally that the strengths of having a core team of NVQ trained personnel in team leading could benefit

the business. Craig Boyd from Furniture Clinic explained: ‘We wanted to develop our team and saw that Business Impact

had a versatile range of training solutions. They were more than just experts in delivering the training modules, and they

really tried to understand our needs, and tailor the programme to suit our specific requirements.’

The relationship has now developed further as Business Impact helped with the recruitment of warehouse apprentices for

the growing business. Nick Atkinson, national sales manager at Business Impact commented: ‘With our experience of

Furniture Clinic, we were able to first assess the existing team and found a candidate who could benefit immediately from

enrolment onto an apprenticeship programme. We understood the importance of people development at the company, and

this made the process quick and easy.’

This confident approach to helping Furniture Clinic has extended the relationship as Business Impact have now also helped

source an external candidate to join the business as an additional warehouse apprentice. Unlike other training companies

Business Impact employs its own in house recruitment team, which offer a completely free service to companies looking to

recruit apprentices. This time consuming and often frustrating process has been simplified significantly because of the best

practice employed by Business Impact, in sourcing and selecting appropriate candidates for each role. For Furniture Clinic it

has been a very successful partnership.

Craig Boyd continued: ‘We have been impressed with the range of services available from Business Impact and the one stop

shop approach for all our training and apprenticeship needs has made them a very effective partner, as our business grows.’

The company was founded in 2004, with its Head Quarters located in North East England. From here, Furniture Clinic

manufacture a unique range of leather cleaning, repair & restoration products used in many industries including Furniture,

Automotive, Clothing, Handbag, Luggage and many more.

Furniture Clinic is committed to research and development, extending its national network of technical centres and highly

skilled technicians, and has been developing its own range of products for the specialist markets in which it operates.

Apprenticeship Success Story:

Apprenticeship Recruitment Tips Assist PG Legal

A leading North East legal practice were impressed with the services of Business Impact when they needed a

rapid solution to finding a new apprentice. PG Legal specialise in practical solutions for legal issues faced by

businesses and are one of a few practices that can handle school to academy conversions.

The practice based on the Team Valley in Gateshead wanted to find a great new apprentice office administrator

to support the business, but already knew the pitfalls and challenges faced when recruiting at this level. That is

where Business Impact stepped in to help, and offered a complete solution from candidate selection through to

apprenticeship training and mentoring.

Nick Atkinson, national sales manager for Business Impact explained: ‘For many businesses, and especially

professional practices, it is a significant challenge and very time consuming to recruit and develop an

apprentice. Each practice has its own specific character and personality, so even choosing candidates can be a

major obstacle to success.’

‘At Business Impact we offer a free selection and recruitment process. This immediately places the emphasis on

the training provider to do all the preparation and selection of the right candidate, and means we have to really

know the business before we start to put candidates forward. This service adds significant value to the overall

process. As we get to know the company and then select appropriate candidates for an apprenticeship, we can

ensure that the whole process which follows appointment is smooth and much more likely to be successful.’

This was the case for PG Legal and in only one week, the journey from enquiry to interview was completed, with

Becky joining the specialist team at PG Legal. For a legal practice, the benefits of a free recruitment service

where the consultants took a detailed specification and only put forward 2 very strong candidates, was a huge

benefit over the traditional apprenticeship training provider.

Phil Dean from PG Legal commented: ‘It was the ease of working with Business Impact which made a real

difference. We would have struggled to identify candidates so quickly, and finding an apprentice with the right

personality, skills and ability to fit in was key to our decision. Business Impact have a unique approach in the

sector, and we are looking forward to building an ongoing relationship as Becky completes her apprenticeship

with the support and guidance from Business Impact. This end to end service, and with no fee is a really solid

proposition for small businesses in the current climate.’

The standard measures and assesses the advice and support services offered by organisations, specifically in terms of career development for young learners.

Business Impact were also acknowledged as having real strength in equality and diversity and all their work is underpinned by forming partnerships with their partner employers to deliver a very personalised high quality service.

The Matrix Standard is an in depth accreditation process which looks at every aspect of the operation, and not just the specifics of the service, and following a strategic restructure in 2011, the company was recognised for the many improvements which had occurred not least in the overall management of the business. The clear importance of providing impartial, learner focused, confidential advice and support, which is freely accessible, is key to a successful accreditation, and Business Impact has maintained the highest standard possible in all these areas.

This assessment also acknowledged the significant resources applied to provision of the IAG service, and that Business Impact has invested in all appropriate advances in technology to ensure they can reach the target audience of learners in the most convenient ways. Commenting on the Matrix Standard, National Sales Manager, Nick Atkinson commented: ‘We work extremely hard to support every individual who comes into contact with our business. Offering outstanding advice and guidance is essential in the current climate, so that candidates can be steered into the perfect opportunities and start their careers with a good foundation.’

‘Our employer partners understand completely the benefits of having a great IAG service, and this report highlights a number of ways we are leading the way with best practice and innovation in service accessibility. It is our guarantee to employers that we can find the best candidates. We also have a commitment to continuous improvement across the business, and this is supporting the development of our IAG service.’

Apprenticeship Success Story:

James Burrell Setting the Standard in Apprenticeship Development James Burrell Builders Merchants have been building an apprenticeship development programme with Business Impact, and are already seeing the foundations of success with four recruits now enrolled on the new scheme. The builders merchants based in Gateshead, but with a network of depots across the North East set out earlier this year to start developing a new apprenticeship scheme, and initially planned to take on just one young person. However the quality and calibre of candidates supplied through Business Impact and the support and development through an Intermediate Apprenticeship, means that now that number of apprentices has quadrupled in just six months. The three new starters at James Burrell are Connor Robinson (20), James Stewart (20) and Dan Hawthorn (17). They have been joined on the apprenticeship programme by existing staff member Daniel Fahey (19) who had previously spent time on holiday placements and worked on the trade counter at the Gateshead depot. All four apprentices are following a one year programme as Warehousing Operatives and completing an Intermediate Apprenticeship, but will also get to work in all areas of the business from logistics and sales to operations and customer services. The programme will develop their confidence and help find them suitable final positions in the business, where their personal skill set can be put to best use. Alyson Graham, HR Manager at James Burrell Builders Merchants commented on the apprenticeship programme; ‘We have a great workforce at James Burrell and many long serving members of staff. We wanted to bring in new employees who could work in all areas of the business from the warehouse logistics and customer services through our trade counters, to working in the back office on administration and operations. The apprenticeship scheme has worked tremendously well, and the three new starters and our existing member of staff who converted onto the apprenticeship programme have all progressed rapidly, and are working extremely well. The advantage of taking apprentices into our business is that they can rotate around the entire business in the early part of their career and we can then assess where they will work best in the long term. Just seeing their confidence grow in the first six months, and the way they deal with customers and support everyone around the business is really positive and demonstrates how this type of apprenticeship scheme, can work well in a business like this.’ Nick Atkinson, National Sales Manager at Business Impact commented: ‘When we were first invited to support James Burrell, it was obvious there was real scope to build a great programme. James Burrell have a great team and we knew they only wanted to see select candidates who would fit into the ethos of the company. We worked hard to find high quality candidates for the position, and the results are obvious, as the programme has expanded rapidly. The day to day management of the apprentices through the in-house Logistics Manager, combined with the development on a structured Intermediate Apprenticeship means they are all setting out on a real career path, with great long term prospects.’ Carl Dutton, Logistics Manager at James Burrell’s depot in Gateshead said: ‘At first I was cautious about recruiting too many apprentices, as we wanted to make sure that each new person fitted in, and could be supported and monitored. The programme through Business Impact, and the great young people we have found to join the business has reassured everyone. Connor, James and Dan have all adapted quickly and are really solid workers. Daniel had already spent some time with us on holiday placements and joined before the scheme started, but moving him across onto the structured programme which includes the qualification, will really help him in the long term.’
