Its always amazing how quickly September passes. The excitement in the building from the start of school carries throughout the whole month and suddenly its October before we know it. I hope your student has enjoyed the start of school this year and that, as a family, you are enjoying this great fall weather. Be sure to take full advantage of it; get out and catch some Skyhawk football or cross country as our fall sports wrap up in October. October is also bringing a change in our FLEX system this year. Through the years, that time has been used for a number of different activities. Lately, it has been a time for our clubs to meet and for teachers to work with students for both intervention and extension. Last year, we had a committee of teachers looking at how we use this last part of our day. Our goal was to make sure that every teacher had a chance to work with kids and that every kid was available to meet with a teacher if needed. For that reason, we took our clubs out of that time and moved them to zero period or to after school so that both advisors and students were freed up. We also shortened the time to cre- ate a time frame that we felt was more optimum for interventions and attention spans. Next week, we will practice putting this plan into place. Students will be given a planner which they will need to have with them in all of their classes. They are able to use that planner for organizing their homework and class- work. Teachers will also use the planner. If teachers want to see a student during FLEX on a given day, they will stamp the students planner. Each subject will have a priority day throughout the week. If your student receives a stamp on that day, that is their destination for FLEX. If they dont have a stamp from the priority subject, but they do have other stamps, they get to choose which class they are going to. If they have no stamps, they can choose to go to our open FLEX classes, which include open gym, a study hall in the dining room, or silent reading in the library. This sounds a little confusing on paper, but we will work with our students over the next few weeks to make sure they understand the procedures. We are looking forward to this new system as it gives us the opportunity to better serve each of our students during our FLEX period. However, we will have students all over the building during the last 45 minutes of our day. This might make it difficult to find students quickly on short notice. If you know you are picking your student up early, please let us know before 3PM so we can locate your student when you arrive. Communication with your student about when to come to the office would also help us out. Finally, as I mentioned, each student will be given a plan- ner, which is essential to this program. If they lose that first planner, replacements are $3.00, so please talk with your student about keeping track of his/her planner. The next few weeks will be a little messy as we work through this new plan, but we will get it worked out. If you have questions about FLEX, or anything else, dont hesitate to contact our office. HOME OF THE SKYHAWKS OCTOBER 2018

Dear Skyhawk Families:

One month down already. It’s always amazing how quickly September passes. The excitement in the building from

the start of school carries throughout the whole month and suddenly it’s October before we know it. I hope your

student has enjoyed the start of school this year and that, as a family, you are enjoying this great fall weather. Be

sure to take full advantage of it; get out and catch some Skyhawk football or cross country as our fall sports wrap up

in October.

October is also bringing a change in our FLEX system this year. Through the years, that time has been used for a

number of different activities. Lately, it has been a time for our clubs to meet and for teachers to work with students

for both intervention and extension. Last year, we had a committee of teachers looking at how we use this last part

of our day. Our goal was to make sure that every teacher had a chance to work with kids and that every kid was

available to meet with a teacher if needed. For that reason, we took our clubs out of that time and moved them to

zero period or to after school so that both advisors and students were freed up. We also shortened the time to cre-

ate a time frame that we felt was more optimum for interventions and attention spans.

Next week, we will practice putting this plan into place. Students will be given a planner which they will need to

have with them in all of their classes. They are able to use that planner for organizing their homework and class-

work. Teachers will also use the planner. If teachers want to see a student during FLEX on a given day, they will

stamp the student’s planner. Each subject will have a priority day throughout the week. If your student receives a

stamp on that day, that is their destination for FLEX. If they don’t have a stamp from the priority subject, but they

do have other stamps, they get to choose which class they are going to. If they have no stamps, they can choose to go

to our open FLEX classes, which include open gym, a study hall in the dining room, or silent reading in the library.

This sounds a little confusing on paper, but we will work with our students over the next few weeks to make sure

they understand the procedures.

We are looking forward to this new system as it gives us the opportunity to better serve each of our students during

our FLEX period. However, we will have students all over the building during the last 45 minutes of our day. This

might make it difficult to find students quickly on short notice. If you know you are picking your student up early,

please let us know before 3PM so we can locate your student when you arrive. Communication with your student

about when to come to the office would also help us out. Finally, as I mentioned, each student will be given a plan-

ner, which is essential to this program. If they lose that first planner, replacements are $3.00, so please talk with

your student about keeping track of his/her planner.

The next few weeks will be a little messy as we work through this new plan, but we will

get it worked out. If you have questions about FLEX, or anything else, don’t hesitate to

contact our office.

Eat Out at Five Guys Oct. 17 – Need an excuse to NOT cook dinner? Here you go: Skyridge will receive a portion of the proceeds when you eat out at Five Guys Burgers & Fries on Wed., Oct. 17, any time from 11 AM till 10 PM. Just present the flyer included here on your phone or in print or simply mention the Skyhawks fundraiser.

Attend a Behind-the-Scenes School Tour Oct. 18 – Swing by Skyridge on Thurs., Oct. 18, 12-1 PM, for a special tour of the school. We’ll show you all the areas you need to know, didn’t know existed, or have heard your child talk about! A member of the District team will also be on hand to share what’s going on in Camas Schools, and we’ll take a moment to share upcoming PTO events and vote in a new treasurer.

Support Skyhawk Students & Staff – Your one-time donation to our Skyr-idge Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) Direct Drive helps fuel Staff Ap-preciation treats and events throughout the year, as well as staff grants that enable even more phenomenal teaching and learning right here at Skyridge. We’ve already awarded more than $350 in teacher grants this year!

Shop & Earn at Fred Meyer – Sign up for the *free* Fred Meyer Commu-nity Rewards program and Sky PTO earns money whenever you shop. Every dollar equals more support for students and staff.

Get to Know Sky PTO – For full details on each of these endeavors AND to see this year’s meeting schedule, visit us at www.skypto.weebly.com. For up-to-date info on Sky PTO, follow us on Facebook.

This year Camas Middle Schools are offering after school intramurals. Each sea-

son, there will be two activities offered from 4-5 PM Mondays/Wednesday or

Tuesday/Thursday. Students can sign up on FamilyID . A one-time, annual ASB

fee of $35 and a per activity fee of $10 can be paid in the main office or online.

Season 1: Futsol and Bombardment

Season 2: Table Tennis and Chess/Board Games

Season 3: To Be Determined

Science Olympiad – For grades 6-8. Contact Mrs.

Holbrook for more information.
