Dear Parents and Caregivers,
STAFFING NEWS Mrs Bodnar has now commenced her maternity leave and will be replaced by Mrs Waller as our K-2 interventionist. I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing Mrs Bodnar all the best as she awaits the birth of her twins. Mrs Hempel also joins our staff, working with the EAL/D students every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
I would like to welcome both Mrs Waller and Mrs Hempel to our school.
HEALTHY CANTEEN ACCREDITATION Great news! I received notification this week that our school canteen meets the requirements of the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy. This strategy is a key initiative to support the Premier’s Priority to tackle childhood obesity. Having a healthy canteen means that our students are more likely to develop healthy eating habits that will have a long-term impact on improving their lives.-
NAPLAN We have had mixed experiences with NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) over the past two weeks. Year 3 were able to complete all their tests, but unfortunately Year 5 were hampered by connectivity issues on the first day of testing. Some of the Year 5 students will re-sit the Writing test next Tuesday, 28 May. NAPLAN results will be sent home once they become available in Term 3.
MOTHER’S DAY STALL I hope all the Smithfield West mothers had a lovely Mother's Day. Thank you to our wonderful P & C members for organising the Mother’s Day stall. As usual, there were lots of beautiful gifts to choose from. I spoke to many excited children as they left school that afternoon who were going to great lengths to hide their gift from their mum. I am sure many mums woke up to lovely little surprises on Mother’s Day.
PHOTOS AND VIDEOS OF SCHOOL EVENTS Throughout the year we have a number of events and activities where parents have the opportunity to take photos and/or make video recordings. I do ask that if you take photos at a school event, in which other students are visible, that you check with their parents before posting images or names anywhere online. In any school community there can be families with private legal issues, who have genuine concerns about maintaining their child’s privacy and security. Thank you for keeping all our children safe.
PSSA WEBSITE All the latest competition tables, general information and playing rules for Horsley Zone PSSA are available on their website at horsleyzone.weebly.com. If your child participates in PSSA I encourage you to check it out.

ATTENDANCE TIP Students being late to school can have an effect on the teacher, other students in their class and themselves.
Students who are late will: miss out on important social interactions with friends in the playground before the bell that can
relax them and set them up positively for the day ahead; miss out on the start of lessons resulting in their learning becoming disjointed and difficult; distract other children when they arrive and interrupt the momentum of the group; and miss any morning messages.
Undue attention to latecomers can place an unnecessary focus on your child that may make them feel uncomfortable and embarrassed.
Arriving to school on time allows children to be part of the daily school routine and feel they belong to a group.
Stephen Gray Principal
SCHOOL CONTRIBUTIONS The Department of Education provides only basic funds for the school’s operation. Annually, we ask parents to support their children’s education through the payment of school contributions. Whilst these contributions are voluntary we rely considerably on them to provide valuable resources to enrich and extend your child’s learning program. Information about your contributions is detailed below and every effort is made to keep costs to a minimum.
School Voluntary Contribution per student $50.00
School Voluntary Contribution per family $80.00
A school receipt will be issued for all payments. I thank you for your continued support of Smithfield West Public School. S. Gray

Did you know that in 2017-18, the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ National Health Survey showed that almost one quarter (24.9%) of children aged 5-17 years were overweight or obese! Childhood obesity is a major concern and if not attended to early it can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
This year our school has registered once again to participate in the NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to encourage students to participate in sport and physical activity to lead a healthy lifestyle. Over a ten week period, we will be monitoring physical activity levels during class time, at recess and lunch as well as during sport lessons. Physical activity outside school hours will also count towards the challenge award. The aim is to work towards an average at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day for 10 weeks.
Physical activity is valued for its physical, social and emotional benefits. It also helps young people to develop communication skills, confidence and resilience. We would like to invite families to support us in encouraging students’ healthy use of leisure time and to experience the joy of being active together.
If you have any further questions about the Challenge, please contact Miss Novak who will be pleased to talk with you. M. Novak Organiser
