Youth unemployment is now127,000 lower than it was in 2010,and across the country last sum-mer, around 100,000 more peoplestarted a new job compared toearlier on in the year includingyoung people for the first time af-ter leaving education.

Karen Hulme from Stroud Job-centre Plus said: Entering theworld of work can be dauntingfor some people, which is why wewant tomakesureyoungpeople inStroud have the skills and experi-ence they need to get off benefitsand into a job.

Young people often tell us theycant get a job without work ex-perience and they cant get workexperience without a job. That iswhy we introduced our work ex-perience scheme to give people ataste of the world of work whichcould open the door to other jobsand careers.

Theres plenty of help and ad-vice on things like work experi-

ence and skills training avail-able through Jobcentre Plus. TheGovernment has also massivelyexpanded work experience, chang-ing the rules so that young people(aged 18-24) on Jobseekers Allow-ance can now do up to two monthswork experience without it affect-ing their benefits.

The Government also increasedapprenticeships and through sec-tor-based work academies youngpeople can get sector-specifictraining in areas like hospitality,along with work experience place-ments and a guaranteed job inter-view.

After discovering how to max-imise the capabilities of theircameras, participants will putthese new techniques into prac-tice, exploring the secret beautyof Stratford Park.

Theos hands-on, practicalworkshop is a great way to learnhow to get the most out of yourcamera, however basic or com-plex.

This session is a fun way to getstarted on digital photographyand hell set you on the rightpath to taking interesting andbeautiful photographs.

Stroud Rock School opensits doors on Monday, August25, with a range of coursescovering all aspects of musi-cianship.

Students aged between 11and 19 years old are invited

to enrol, whethertheyreintorock, pop, funk, punk, jazz orhip hop.

The programme of work-shops, seminars and practi-cal sessions will include per-formance skills, forming andrunninga band, effectiveself promotion, as well as record-

ing and production.Tutors include both local

professional musicians andmusic industry insiders, allof who aim to give buddingmusicians the head-startthey are looking for.

There is a charge to attendthe course, but some spon-

Friends are in good company as they share a love of photographyGOOD friends, Jessie Fordand Emilie Sandy have recent-ly set up a wedding photogra-phy business in Stroud.

The pair met as children,in the village of Selsley andthen worked together formany years in Moonflower, inStroud.

Ms Sandy studied at St Mar-tins, University of the Arts,

pursuing her photographyand subsequently setting upher own portraiture photog-raphy business, and Ms Fordcarved out a career as a suc-cessful illustrator and stylist,with work featured in Vogue , Elle , and Marie Claire .

Our shared love of photog-raphy and the rolling hills of Stroud, has brought us back

War, Women and Song ,based on freshly-foundmemories, gets its premierein Bristol at the end of themonth.

Around 600 entertainers,most of them young wom-en, joined Lena Ashwellscontroversial YMCA con-cert parties between 1914and 1919 to perform for Our

Boys in freezing tents, hutspacked with wounded, onships at sea and at the bed-sides of the dying.

They included Stroud cel-list Daisy Godfrey, one of thefirst women to study musicat university.

Daisy Godfrey was borninto a wealthy Stroud family.Despite a genteel upbring-ing, she was one of the firstto volunteer to join the LenaAshwell YMCA concert par-ties. Before long she becamethe manager of one troupe fixingup theiroften complextravel and accommodationarrangements right throughuntil 1919.

At first, she refused to playGerman musicandwas quiteputoutwhenaskedto play ata POW camp. But then she

saw the pale homesick Ger-man boys and was moved totears bytheir responseto thewell-known German lullabyshe chose to perform.

The show has been createdbytheatre-makers AnnaFar-thing and Bea Roberts, us-ing dramatised versions of real-life stories drawn fromarchive records, newly-dis-covered diaries, letters andpersonal testimonies andthebest-loved music of the FirstWorld War era.

Performances will takeplace at the Redgrave Thea-tre, Bristol, August 31 untilSeptember 2, at 8pm.
