Polyether – An amazing story. For 54 years, Polyether has remained the most distinctive of the elastomeric dental impression materials available. Unique in not only its molecular structure, formulation and chemical setting reaction, but also in the complex manufacturing equipment and processes required to make every batch. Our cover photo shows the special reaction tank, specifically used in the production of Polyether impression materials and found in only one location in the world – in our state-of-the-art 3M Oral Care manufacturing plant in Seefeld, Germany.
It is in this beautiful part of the world, just south of Munich, where Polyethers were first invented in 1965, and where the basic raw materials were originally developed. Now in 2019, our R&D teams continue to strive for improvement not only in production optimisation but, more importantly, in the development of new materials like the recently introduced 3M™ Impregum™ Super Quick Polyether Impression Material.
So what makes Polyethers so special? The molecular breakthrough
was in the development of the hydrophilic macromonomer offering Polyethers a natural and intrinsic property ideally suited for impressioning in a permanently moist environment such as the mouth. The macromonomer (along with added Triglycerides) would also offer Polyether precise flow behaviour which ensures optimal wetting of the preparation surface after syringing around the preparations.
With the complexity of an indirect restorative procedure, the requirements concerning impression accuracy has effectively increased. Optimising impression quality means minimising your risk that impressions need to be retaken and prosthetic work needs to be adjusted - leading to a more efficient and economic treatment procedure.
For this reason, many dentists have since 1965, and still do, rely heavily on those very special properties of the 3M™ Impregum™ Polyether Impression Materials. At the same time, 3M Oral Care identified a growing demand for a material that offers these benefits combined with a setting time ideal for small cases.
With that in mind a development team was set up by Dr Joachim Zech, Head of the R&D Team for Impression Materials at 3M in Seefeld, Germany.
"With the ongoing evolution of the Polyether chemistry, a significant reduction of the setting time was very challenging, as we needed to develop a new initiator compound, but critically without it affecting the
unique Polyether characteristics. We were able to successfully accomplish this task thanks to the possibility of collaborating closely with our skilled colleagues from the chemical synthesis plant and from production in Seefeld. In this way, we were able to streamline the complete process from raw material development to production." - Dr Zech
Although the basic chemistry was altered, our new Impregum material is STILL a true Polyether. The new base paste still contains the aziridino-polyether – the beating heart of every Polyether impression material. The result is a faster setting reaction and – as a beneficial side effect – a more neutral taste of the impression material. Extensive testing of the basic raw materials and the pastes in the development phase was carried out to ensure that the proven Polyether properties were still included in the new 3M Impregum

Super Quick material. We now have a well-balanced alternative Polyether impression material, combining the proven material properties with a short setting reaction that make the material worth testing in the practice environment.
The overall conclusion is that many dental practitioners prefer Polyether impression materials whenever intraoral moisture control is difficult. For these existing Impregum users, it might also be beneficial to start using a true Polyether for their small cases as well. For those who are not familiar with the typical intrinsic hydrophilicity of Polyethers and the clinical behaviour related to this feature, it might be a perfect occasion to find out more about it now.

Midline Diastema closure using the front wing technique. by Dr Walter Devoto, Italy 2019.
Product Feature: NEW 3M™ Filtek™ Universal Restorative.
The Challenge:The surface of the restorations showed slight discolourations which were removable by polishing. The shape of the teeth was acceptable, but not perfect. A decision was made to retreat her in a non-prep, single-shade approach. The main goal was to create a more natural shape. The front wing technique invented by the StyleItaliano team was used. This approach involved freehand modeling of the vestibular part of the tooth, which was easily accessible. Afterward, material was added to the palatal side, and anatomical matrices were employed for shape optimisation. Final restorations in place.
