In the club’s effort to help maintain blood supply, we had the first blood donation drive of this year on 28 June, Sunday, at the Ballroom. A total of 37 members, guests and staff came forward to give the gift of life The regulars ought to be commended for taking time out of their precious weekend to donate. Special kudos goes to the first time donors who winced and cringed at the sight of the needles, but went ahead motivated by the realization that their donation would make the difference between life and death.

Many of the guest donors came in response to the appeals we put up at Community Centre notice boards and websites. Seven members of The Harley Owners Group (Singapore Chapter), led by their Assistant Director & Activities Coordinator, Barney Phillips, were down as well. Some of them were regular blood donors in their home countries but were donating for the first time in Singapore.

Don’t Miss Les Beat! By Josh Fikhrie
Music & Me rocks!By Josh Fikhrie
Armand and his angels, Jane and Rina, have been doing music for seventeen years now, and still counting. They have played in renowned hotel chains all over Switzerland, China and Malaysia. For the past six years or so, they have been operating in the local music scene. Armand, who is also the technical support advisor and has a Degree in Arts and Philosophy says he plays music purely out of passion and the satisfaction of entertaining people. With their repertoire of evergreen hits from Barbara Streisand, Cher, Nat King Cole and many others, this lustrous Filipino Band is not to be missed! You can catch them Live at D’Tanjong every Saturday from 8pm.
Rihanna? Evanescence? That was certainly a channel switch we had at D’Tanjong the night! It was 3 July, the opening night for Les Beat – and they were in their elements! This 5-piece outfit is known for their staple of Top-40 and MTV hits.
The crowd of thirty-somethings who had come listen to the new band in action were not disappointed. They were taken from Natalie Imbruglia to One Republic, and from Amy Winehouse to Duffy, with The Police and Bon Jovi thrown in. The members of Les Beat are all home grown musicians – and

mighty proud of that fact! Rima, lead singer by night and property agent by day, has performed for Singapore Tourism Board in India, and has been featured in countless TV and magazines spots. And if the voice you’ve heard in some of the ad jingles sound like her, you are probably right in your suspicion. Rima’s band won Battle of The Bands
back in 1986, as was runner-up in 1988’s SBC Talentime. Want to listen to more current hits? Then join Les Beat at D’Tanjong every Friday from 8:30pm.

It was such a thrill! Many of our members on the tour have eaten figs in their various forms – and now they were actually looking at the tree from which they came! And there were other unusual fruit and vegetables to see at the Bollywood Veggies Farm which we visited on Saturday morning of 11 July. The farm was situated in the countryside near Kranji. Earlier, we were greeted by farm owner, Ms Ivy Singh - Lim who gave us a briefing on what to expect, then left her husband take us through a journey of discovery. We learned some interesting facts about the various herbs, both the common ones and some less common. After the 40-minute guided tour, it was time for lunch and we were treated to a wide spread of dishes including Bollywood Veggies’ famous Warriors Chicken Curry and Kueh Koshi. Then, it was time to head back to the Club and our fast-paced city life.

Enhance Your Face Aesthetically with Dr. Siew Tuck Wah23 May | By Josh Fikhrie
What comes to mind when we talk of enhancing our face? The first thing that comes to most people’s mind - plastic surgery! Dr Siew Tuck Wah told his listeners that there was more to body aesthetics than plastic surgery. He spoke of correcting the marks caused by ageing, over exposure to sunlight, the effects of medication, and other external causes. He went on to discuss the possible solutions using modern medical techniques such as botox, fillers, laser and IPL. The casual discussion picked up momentum, and what was supposed to be a two-hour session stretched to almost three hour session during which Dr Siew broke some beauty myths and gave his take on what beauty really is.

On 29 & 30 May, Singapore Swimming Club again had the honor of hosting some of the world’s finest swimmers from Australia who were en route to Europe for competition. Amongst them were Libby Trickett, multi-Olympic Gold Medalist; Eamon Sullivan, Andrew Lauterstein and Geoff Huegill, all multi-Olympic medalists and Matthew Abood, the Australian National Champion, along with their coach, Grant Stoelwinder.
While in Singapore, they did their training at the Club and even found time to conduct a coaching clinic for some of our local swimmers at the Australian International School.
On the first day of training at the Club, some coaches from other Clubs and media people were invited down to watch them train and interact with the swimmers.
During the Q&A sessions, coaches took the opportunity to ask them for tips on swimming techniques. Needless to say, the controversial topic of the hi-tech swimsuits was brought up. The Australian swimmers were also asked to share their best and worst moments during their swimming career. The most lighthearted question brought up by one of our young swimmer was, “Why are you so big sized and I’m so small?”
Our own swimmers, too, got the chance to get up close and personal with the swim stars! A breakfast cum meet-and-greet session was organised for this purpose. These world class swimmers appear laid-back people but they have positive attitude towards training which we hope will rub off on our swimmers.

National Survival Swimming Awards
15 – 20 June | By Snow Quek
Seeing the participants in their pyjamas, one would think they were coming for a sleepover party. But there was serious intent in their casual attire. It was part of the scenario set out in the National Survival Swimming Awards (NASSA) held from 15 to 20 June. With 43 swimmers taking part, it was one of the highest number of participants we’ve ever had! And we had a 100% passing rate as well, all this thanks to the hard work put in by the coaches. Congratulations to all the participants!
Club Night #3 & #4 29 May & 10 July | By Snow Quek
The last two Club Nights (29 May & 10 July) were scheduled close to School Nationals (Tertiary and Primary) or in between the Midget Meets to give our coaches the chance to gauge their swimmers and make adjustment to their training programmes if necessary. We thank all our swim parents for their help and hope for their continued support in the future meets!
Distance Swimming Award
28 June | By Snow Quek
This second Distance Swimming Award of the year attracted 12 participants, ranging from 6 to 50 years old! Everyone came to swim farther than they did the last time round, or complete the same distance in a shorter time. If you missed the last meet held on 28 June, come join us for the next edition happening in September!

We all need a break every once in a while. For 22 of our young swimmers, the Midget Fun Camp was their opportunity to get away from the rigours of diet and training. This year, this annual camp was held on 2 & 3 June at the Club and several out-of-Club venues.
It was just a short two-day camp, but they maxed it out but packing it with fun-filled activities. On the first day, the kids tried their hand at ice-cream making. Their final products were nothing like Baskin Robbins, but they all enjoyed themselves, and that was what mattered.
On the second day everyone was up on fifth gear as they set off for Pasir Ris Downtown East where they had a field day romping around or cycling at Pasir Ris Park.
Bickering aside, the kids still had a great time. By the looks of it, they will be back for more the next time the camp comes around!

Four of our Taekwondo students participated in the above event held at Yishun Sports Hall on Sunday, 14 June. This event was organized by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation. The 1st World Poomsae Championship format was adopted, which used the electronic scoring system which displays the scores given by the judges after each competitor completes his round.
Besides giving our Taekwondo students exposure to competition, this outing was meant to build up their confidence for future technical development in the Poomsae competition and their grading exercise which is coming up soon.
Our heartiest congratulations to our Taekwondo students for their commendable performances.

Winning the Youth Girls’ Open Masters title at the 42nd Singapore International Bowling Open was not a straightforward path for Kristel Oh. She threw away the first three games and that saw her lagging badly behind the leaders. At that point she knew she had to produce some big games to get a crack at the title. But produce she did and she started to claw her way back in contention, and went on to win the title.
Jazreel Tan was recently crowned Sports Girl of the Year 2008 by the Singapore National Olympic Council for her lustrous achievements in the sport of Bowling which included winning the Malaysian Open Ladies Masters 2008 title, and winning the Gold (Mixed Doubles), 3 Silvers (Women Singles, Women Doubles and Women Masters) and a Bronze (Women All-Events) at the Commonwealth Bowling Championships in Belfast.

Jazreel Tan is Sports Girl of the Year 2008 By Daniel Ng
This is the second time Jazreel is picking up the Sports Girl Award. “It is an honour to be recognised by the Sports Council and SNOC for the Award for the second consecutive year. It pushes me to work even harder,” she said. Jazreel will be going over to the US in August to further her studies, but will continue bowling over there and picking up new ideas and experiences.
But before that she will have another stab at stardom from home soil. She will be with the Singapore Team competing in the World Women Championships in Las Vegas at the end of July.
“I am extremely happy at winning this award as this is my first International Girls Open title. Hopefully there will be more to come,” she said.
Kristel is grateful for the grounding she had at Singapore Swimming Club.
“I learned a lot from the experiences in the many bowling tournaments I’ve taken part at the Club. My friends at the Club have pushed me to greater heights and helped me preserve the interest I have in this sport,” she said.

BEST PERFORMANCE AWARD:
JORDAN LEE
The 11th series of the Club’s Open Championship was held at the Grand Ballroom on Saturday, 23 May, with 17 trainees contesting in the Sparring, Individual Poomse and Individual Freestyle Destruction Events.
Umpired by Head Coach, Sam Tan, and assisted by the pool of SSC professional referees and instructors, the event started off on an intense note when Khoe Cai Hao had to beat his younger brother Cai Cheng in the Junior Boys Poom Belt Light Weight sparring event, before going on to beat Bryan Chong in the Finals. In the other sparring event, Jordan Lee beat Ashwyn Seth win in the Youth Boys Poom Belt Welter Weight category. The other highlight of the championship was undoubtedly the Individual Freestyle Destruction, where all the contestants had to execute their individually designed pattern to break four planks in order to get the full marks. Ashwyn broke the most planks to emerge as champion in the Individual Freestyle Destruction event.
The Best Performance Award went to Jordan Lee for the 3rd time this year, and got to bring the championship trophy home for good.
Martial Arts & Fitness Convenor, Ricky Chong, gave away souvenirs to the umpires and referees, and trophies to our deserving winners.

We won the bronze last year and had set out to go one up in this year’s tournament. Turns out, we almost lost the bronze even, no thanks to the Warren Golf & Country Club team.
Last year we had beaten WGCC comfortably when we hosted the match. But they were a different kettle of fish this year when we met them on their home ground. They put up stiff resistance forcing the match to a 2-2 draw. However, we won on the “unique” countback of games which was used in the event of a tie/draw. Yes, we managed to scrape through the match with Warren and salvaged a point, but the result of that match did have a bearing on us. We finished third when we could have ended up second in the overall league standings.
Having missed key players at different points in the season through injury, we felt that finishing third again this year was still a well deserved result.
For the records, the SAFRA Teams 1 & 2, our perennial rivals, took the first and second spots respectively, identical to last year’s standings. We want to make sure that this ranking is not going to be set in stone. It looks like we have our work cut out for us for the next year’s tournament.
Squash, anyone? To carry on from our recent success in the Veterans division, our squash fraternity is planning a major assault on some exciting tournaments looming up the horizon, and are looking for fresh, talented recruits – especially juniors (below 40)! In the coming months, Squash Convenor, Mr Deepak Mahtani, will be organizing some activities which will hopefully spark fresh interest in the game. If you are a squash player in hibernation, or interested to pick up the game, please contact :Daniel at 6342 3602/3617 or email [email protected] We have social/member nights on every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7pm and Saturdays from 4pm so all are welcome.

8-Ball Pool Competition 20 - 30 April | By Arun Rajan
17 participants took part in this knock-out competition held from 20 – 30 April. The roller-coaster ride for Defending Champion Terence Teo started when he was beaten 5-3 by Eugene Ang in the preliminary round, and was forced to play in the Losers Pool. There, another shock awaited him when he met Saahil Mehta and he found himself trailing 0-4. He was staring at doom in the face. But he somehow managed to draw on his reserves to beat Saahil 5-4. Terence progressed to meet Eugene in the Losers Pool semis and on to meet Rajesh Khurana in the Finals. The Finals was fought match for match up to 4-4, but Terence did a Houdini once again, pulling away to a 9-4 win and a successful defense of his title.
Billiards Ad-Hoc Committee member Prashant Chainani gave away the trophies to the winners who also received gifts of computer products sponsored by Eugene Ang of JK Technology.

Various programmes were organised in June to expose our kids to a variety of sports. 10 kids aged from five to twelve participated in the Inline Skating & Rock Climbing Funstarts, conducted by Inline Culture and Climb Asia on 16 & 18 June respectively. 12 attended the Tennis Clinic held at our tennis courts from 9 to 12 June. And 16 kids joined the Table Tennis Clinic held at the Club’s new Table Tennis Hall from 17 to 19 June. Many who took part in the clinics were trying the sport for the first time. Tennis Coach James Bagawan and Table Tennis Coach Li Guo Bin gave free T-shirts to their participants for their enthusiasm.
But the highlight of the holiday programme must be the Annual Sports Camp held from 22 to 26 June at various venues. 24 juniors aged between seven and twelve learned to play several games endorsed by the Club, namely Badminton, Billiards & Pool, Bowling, Squash, Soccer, Table Tennis, Tennis and Golf.
Each student was given three T-shirts which they proudly wore during the 5-day camp. The first game the participants tackled was Badminton under Coach, Yeo Ah Seng, followed by the other games over the next four days. On the final day, the kids learned golf swing, putting and chipping at Asian Golf Center located at Mandai.
Upon their return to the Club, the children were told to write a composition on their camp experience. Senior Manager (Sports) Lily Tan, gave away prizes & certificates to the best writer, best team, best girl and best boy.

The admin staff recently bid a fond farewell to Kathleen Chia who has been with the Club for 45 years. She started off as a stenographer in 1964 and rose up the ranks to Office Manager in 1987 and Membership Manager in 1993. Then in 2002 was promoted to Special Projects Manager, a position she retained until she retired in July 2009. Charming in disposition, Kathleen had the reputation of being the “encyclopedia” of the Club. She is able to rattle off Club Rules and protocols at the drop of a hat! “I remember her as a straightforward, no-nonsense boss,” said Sumiatun, a long-time associate who worked with Kathleen for many years. “She is a career woman and has given her life to the Club. Even when she is on leave she will call back to ask what her staff are doing,” “But she has a heart of gold,” added Ruhana, another long-time associate. “She is one boss who will listen even when her staff has a personal problem. There were many occasions when she helped her staff when it was not her responsibility to do so.” Later in the event, another Farewell Dinner was organized in her honour. This round, Past Presidents and Members who had worked with KC were invited. Before the dinner, the past presidents including Mr Jimmy Yim, Mr Henry Chan, Mr Teo Kwang Whee and Mr S Radakrishnan shared with all their fun and touching moments working with KC. Afterwhich, a scroll was presented to KC , and the night ended with a delicious spread of dinner and Karaoke session. Kathleen has received numerous commendations from members and management for her contribution to the Club. Her presence is certainly going to be missed by many. The good news is that she has agreed to come in when her help is needed. Farewell KC!

GM brings staff up to speed with Club happenings
Staff Birthday PartyA gathering of April, May & June babies
52 of our staff got together at Jackson Miller Private Room on 23 June 09 to share a cake, play some games and sing the birthday song. The Spring-Summer babies certainly brought their sunshine with them. The burst-the baloon and musical chair gave everyone the chance to bring out the child in them. The party ended with the mainstay makan and Lucky Draw. And everyone was given gifts of spa-treatment vouchers generously sponsored by Rustic Nirvana.
The annual Staff Bowling Tournament was held on Tuesday, 26 May, with 13 participants lined up at the start. The participants bowled a six-game series – three on a 9-pin tap format and three scratch events. During the first three games on a 9-pin tap format, Nazri from Jackpot Department was leading the pack. But consistency is the name of the game, and there is also the element of luck. By the end of the tournament, Othman Abdul Madjid from Sports Bowling department, with twenty years of experience in the bowling industry overtook Nazri to emerge as the winner with an average of 215. This year, we had 10 special Lucky Draw prizes to give away.

On Sunday, 7 June around 13 staff and family members gathered early at about 7.30am at the Singapore Harbour Front Centre all set to take off to Batam. It was just a one-day trip and we packed in as many stops as was possible into the itinerary. We took in several shopping malls and stores to purchase both local and branded goods. We also went to the famous Toa Pek Kong Temple. Then at around noontime, it started to rain. We were afraid that would dampen the participants’ spirit but they were not in the least affected. Thankfully after two hours, the rain stopped and we proceeded to the well-known Balerang Bridge where we were lucky enough to see a rainbow. The trip ended at around 9pm, and although we were all physically drained out by then, we really enjoyed the trip especially the sumptuous seafood lunch.
On Wednesday, 15 July, the Club staff got together in two batches for GM’s quarterly meeting, during which GM ran through the list of New MC
Members and their portfolios. GM also discussed the findings gleaned from the first Associates Engagement Survey carried out in May this year, and highlighted a few items that needed urgent attention. The Club’s Mission Statement and Core Values are being refined to reflect the changing times and issues relating to teamwork and discipline were also discussed. The final message was
for staff to keep a watchful eye on their department’s bottomlines and cut down on unnecessary wastages. Every associate will soon be issued with a handbook containing the basic terms and conditions of service, entitlements and so on. And all staff were urged to participate in the Staff Suggestion Scheme and contribute towards the betterment of the Club.

Within the next decade, more than a million Singaporeans will be in their golden years, and how to cope with an aging population will be a major concern for our government and society at large. There are many issues of aging to address and to overcome.
Active aging for me is going after fruitful and meaningful pursuits in our “golden years”. After years of toil working for a living, active aging is a re-TYRE-ment – it gives us a new set of wheels, so to speak, to live a meaningful and fun-filled life. I am walking proof of the maxim that indeed there is life after work!
Active aging lifestyle activities open up innumerable opportunities for us to participate in new and interesting things – perhaps things we may have dreamed of doing but never had the time, or opportunity, to do them. They fire the human spirit in us to move forward and explore, not just to sink
Join A3 Club and Gear Up for Adventure!By Daniel Koh
into our armchair and reminisce about our past. What can I do in my golden years you might ask? To name a few: Horse-riding in the countryside. Taking in the beauty of the forest from a treetop. Discovering the richness and beauty of the flora and fauna in the rainforests of South East Asia. Or maybe trekking up some mountain to catch the spectacle of colours at sunrise.
There are opportunities to travel, and to interact with peoples of varied cultures and traditions and to share ours with them. My latest once-in-a-lifetime adventure happened earlier this year in June when I flew to Montana, USA, with my wife June for my University reunion. There I had a heartwarming reunion with my ex-classmates who are of different nationalities. We took the opportunity to discover the wonders of nature, and the geology and archeology of the area dating back millions of years. We also explored the forest, plants and wildlife in the Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. It was an eye-opening and enriching experience for me!

Official Launch of SSC A3 Club The Club for Active Seniors
Saturday, 19 September | 2pm – 4pm, Meyer RoomFree admission!Come and have tea with Mr Gerard Ee, former President of National Council of Social Service and Chairman of Council for Third Age and, adventurer Mr Daniel Koh. Mr Ee will provide us with more information on Active Aging and Mr Koh will share with us the different expeditions he had been on. They will be on hand to help launch the new SSC A3 Club – our own adventure Club for Seniors and Families.
Find out what’s in store for you when you join this new adventure club. Pick up an A3 brochure at the Front Lobby now!
To kick-start the opening of this new Club, We are organizing two events for Senior members of the Club and families:
Adventure Photo Exhibition @ Front Lobby8 – 23 AugustCome and view this special photo exhibition showcasing the various adventure trips made by Mr. Daniel Koh and the Singapore Women’s Everest Team.
Interactive Session with Mr Daniel KohSaturday, 29 August | 3pm – 4pm, Sports Conference RoomFree admission!Has the Adventure Photo Exhibition at the Main Lobby stirred you? Are you seeing POSSIBILITIES for yourself? Then come for this interactive session. Mr Koh will be on hand to answer all the burning questions you may have. Egg him on and he will share more of his adventure stories with his usual candor and infectious enthusiasm.
About The Speaker: Mr Daniel Koh, 72, is the winner of the Prudential Prime Award for Active Aging 2008. He has been up Mount Kinabalu and Mount Kilimanjaro, and has dived at Sipadan – while in his sixties and seventies! How did he achieve that? Come and ask him yourself!
There are other active-aging adventures like cycling/biking, fishing, white-water rafting, kayaking and parasailing, jungle trekking, scuba diving and indoor games. And if you are fit enough you could even go further afield on expeditions to the Arctic or Antarctic, both of which were milestones in my recent adventures. The list goes on and on.
Some of the above activities I have undertaken on my own – but many I have enjoyed with my whole family, including my wife, children and grandchildren.
Doing things together as a family is just the antidote for the “generation gap”, a serious social issue confronting us here in Singapore. It enables us seniors to stay connected with the young and understand them better
– and vice-versa. And there are opportunities to stay connected with old friends and to make new friends along the way. Friendships are vital in our golden years; many surveys have shown that the single most important issue that confronts the elderly is “loneliness”. Active-aging activities keep us in good shape, body, mind and spirit!
Paradoxically, I believe that I have been an active ager since the age of six and have continued in an active aging lifestyle right to this point of time. At six, I was swimming with coconut floats, catching rainbow fish in monsoon drains and catching spiders among hibiscus plants. Today I scuba dive, fish, dance, play badminton, trek up mountains and journey to the ends
of the earth. We want to live life to the full, and not to become a dinosaur or fossilized in our old age!So, why not partner me in bashing through some uncharted territories by being a member of our own homegrown Active Aging Club? As a member, you can take part in the Club’s activities that are customized for you and “doable” for SSC seniors and their family members.
Are the activities costly? Fear not, as they generally do not cost more than the normal tours offered by travel agents, yet have a much higher value for life. Sign up now as a member now – or approach our Social Executives’ Desk for information and advice.
