• Sports are a fun environment for our society. It has the food, the fans, the rivalries, everything we look forward to when we think of sports.

• The extent of an injury and the desire of an athlete to return to their sport still determine how quickly this return can happen, but sports rehabilitation is speeding up the process on the technical side of sports injuries

Page 4: Sports Injuries

• According to National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, are “the kinds of injuries that most commonly occur during sports or exercise. Some sports injuries result from accidents; others are due to poor training practices, improper equipment, lack of conditioning, or insufficient warm up and stretching” (“Handout”).

• There are 206 bones and over 650 muscles in the body.

• Jammed fingers are sprained knuckles. Use the R.I.C.E method to heal them.

Page 7: Sports Injuries

• Shin splints are the pain in the muscles around the front outside area of the leg. To prevent them work your muscles up and to treat ice them.

• A sprain is stretch or tear of the ligament while a strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon. Use the R.I.C.E. method.

• A dislocation is the separation of any joint and the most common is a shoulder dislocation. The joint must be popped back in and may need surgery.

• There are two types of fractures, an acute fracture which is a one-time injury to a bone or a stress fracture which is from stress constantly wearing at the bone. The bone will more than likely need to be casted.

• The knee is prone to many types of injuries. One of the more serious injuries is an ACL tear. They require surgery and time off.

Page 12: Sports Injuries

• A concussion is a traumatic injury to the brain caused by a blow to the head and can be mild, moderate, or severe. There is no treatment other than rest.

• Prevention is the best way to lower risks of injuries. Remember good stretching, braces, and icy hot.
