Patches of Patersons curse growing alongside the Calder Freeway are being controlled, VicRoads has claimed.

Responding to concerns raised by motorists who noted purple owers from Keilor Park Drive to the north of Gisborne, acting regional director Bryan Sherritt said VicRoads regularly inspected roadsides and conducted noxious weed eradication.

Our most recent inspections along the Calder Freeway revealed small and isolated traces of Patersons curse, he said, adding that the highly invasive weed was oen confused with other plants, such as vetch and lucerne, which also have purple owers.

VicRoads works closely with the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources on a range of proactive initiatives for treating noxious weeds.

In late spring through to early summer last year, we conducted treatment programs targeting noxious weeds, including Patersons curse and St Johns wort, along the Calder.

Mr Sherritt said roadside maintenance contractors had to implement weed hygiene measures to reduce the spread of weeds such as Patersons curse and St Johns wort through contact with vehicles, machinery or as a result of operating procedures.

Patersons curse ourishes in fertile dark clays and is a wildower of the Mediterranean, but a weedy pest in Australia. It is a threat to livestock due to its poisonous ower.

Bendigo line commuters are dismayed by revelations that the disruption of V/Line services is set to continue for weeks to come.

Hundreds of trains were again cancelled last week due to ongoing problems including an escalated rate of wear on the wheels of VLocity carriages and the failure of a train to trigger boom gates. e crisis led to the resignation of the regional train operators chief executive, eo Taifalos, last ursday.

But Woodend commuter Maxwell Winchester said V/Lines problems obviously went much deeper.

While a lot of people are relieved to see the CEO go, the whole thing has clearly been managed in a poor way, he said.

It should never have got to this point there have to be a lot of other people involved who reported to that CEO.

Dr Winchester said that while a second week of free travel was a nice gesture the reality was that the free buses were being funded by taxpayers.

Its a bit of a irony, really, because we are paying for it, too, he said.

He said commuters were sick of the blame game between the two major political parties.

V/Line passengers are furious and so is the government. What has happened is not good enough.

V/Line now expects services on the Bendigo line to steadily improve from mid-February but it will be months before full services resume.

Timetable changes scheduled for January 31 have been deferred. e government has also ordered a review of V/Line operations.

Hume council says it stands ready to help the state government build new education facilities, with 21 new schools needed to meet the demands of population growth over the next 20 years.

Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said while the governments commitment to a new school at Craigieburn was welcome, other suburbs, including Sunbury, Greenvale and Mickleham, would all need more primary and secondary education options in coming years.

8459 secondary school-age students, Cr Patsikatheodorou said. Our current state schools cannot cater for this massive growth. Now is the time for the state government to set money aside.

Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie OFarrell welcomed the councils push.

As we all know, this growth is only going to continue, he said.

Youve got all the new subdivisions along Vineyard Road and out towards Diggers Rest; theres Sunbury Fields and more land at Racecourse Road

We want to work alongside government ocials as they plan the schools that can educate our youngest residents in the decades ahead.

e number of primary school-age children in Hume is expected to increase 65 per cent by 2035. Secondary school enrolments are expected to rise by 51 per cent in that time.

e government is delivering 17 new schools across Melbournes outer growth areas over the next few years alone, with more schools to be announced soon, he said. We will continue to work to develop solutions for meeting current and future demand.

Being creative under the eagle eyes of some of Australias culinary leaders is top of the menu for young Kyneton chef Harry Gibbs.

e 18-year-old was one of just seven aspiring chefs from around Victoria selected for dairy giant Fonterras Proud to be a Chef program.

A selection of 34 Australian apprentices will be mentored by executive pastry chefs and food service experts as part of this months event, with a $7500 international culinary placement up for grabs.

Gibbs is four months o completing his apprenticeship at e Good Table in Castlemaine.

He says winning the contest would give his career a major boost.

I would love to travel and work around the world, he says. America would be a good start it has some pretty incredible restaurants.

e former Sacred Heart College student says hes been interested in food for as long as he can remember.

For sure, it always interested me as a kid.My mum always cooked really nice food, so

I guess that drew me into it. Once I started, I couldnt help myself.

Gibbs has tried his hand at all types of cuisine, but says cold meals, entrees and desserts are his favourites.

Where I am at the moment, we change our menu weekly so I get to come up with a lot of new things.

Anyone caught doing burnouts or engaging in hoon behaviour should have their car impounded and sold for charity or crushed, a Hume councillor believes.

Speaking in the wake of a Western Ring Road crash that killed two people aer an illegal street racing meet in Campbelleld early last Wednesday, Cr Jack Medcra called on the state government to tighten hoon laws.

eres places in Hume that are getting raided by hoons every Friday and Saturday night, he said. As a council we cant do much about it. e government has to step in.

and police while holed up inside his oce. I.H. Hunter director Lachlan Hunter said up to 100 cars were meeting in Lillee Crescent on an almost nightly basis.

Cr Medcra said that aside from the obvious risks to safety, hoon driving created a costly mess.

People need to understand their rates are also being chewed up by these idiots because

Cr Medcra said there should be no mercy, even for rst-time oenders.

ey should have their car impounded and then either auctioned or crushed, he said.

If you auction them o the money should go to charity, and that person should be restricted from buying a vehicle for another 12 months.

Cr Medcra said the hoon problem in Hume had worsened. Hoon hotspots in Sunbury include roads around newer housing estates, while industrial areas in Tullamarine and Campbelleld are regularly taken over by illegal meets promoted through social media.

A Tullamarine business owner recently emailed live commentary to the council

we have to go out and repair the roads, he said. e heat thats generated by car tyres going around melts the tar.

At the end of the day, if you like your cars and doing this sort of stu, go to Calder Park.

A police taskforce was set up in November to target street racing groups operating in northern and south-eastern suburbs.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said the increasingly organised nature of the groups meant police had to take a dierent approach instead of simply dispersing participants.

Macedon Ranges residents and businesses continue to be held back by slow internet and poor mobile phone reception.

at was the view expressed by Bendigo Labor MP Lisa Chesters and federal opposition communications spokesman Jason Clare during a tour of the electorate last week.

Mr Clare met business owners at Woodend on Wednesday night, saying the federal government had failed voters, who had been promised high-speed national broadband by years end.

While the NBN is available in Kyneton and parts of Woodend, Riddells Creek and Romsey, residents and business owners at Gisborne and Lanceeld, among others, have been le to deal with old technology.

Ms Chesters said she hears daily from people whose lives are being negatively aected.

Malcolm Turnbull promised that every home in Australia would have access to the NBN by the end of 2016. He has failed to deliver.

e latest NBN rollout plan schedules 2400 premises at Romsey and Lanceeld, 1390 from Ashbourne to Woodend and 14,400 in Sunbury and Diggers Rest to have an NBN bre-to-the-node connection by March this year. A further 3030 premises in Bulla, Gisborne and Riddells Creek will have xed wireless connections by January 2017.

From coaching tennis to running the football club canteen, weeding the Neighbourhood House garden and baking slices for Anglican church fundraisers whenever theres been a job thats needed doing in Lanceeld, Loraine Kraus has been there.

But while the citation for her Macedon Ranges citizen of the year award described her as the heart and soul of the town, Mrs Kraus insists shes done nothing particularly special.

Rather, she reckons shes simply done whatever she could to help people in the place shes called home for close to 50 years.

Anything that people ask me to do, I just do it, she said.

Ive never really batted an eye about it I just do things and dont expect to be recognised.

Mrs Kraus says her Australia Day award, presented at a ceremony at Kyneton Town Hall on Tuesday, came as a complete surprise.

I didnt know anything about it [the award], she says. Im not the kind of person who likes praise Id rather they just said, anks Loraine and that was it.

Someone recently asked why Im always helping and I didnt really have an answer. A friend of mine said, Its because youre very community minded. I suppose thats a good way to put it.

Mrs Kraus was a driving force behind Lanceeld Tennis Clubs eorts to raise money for new lights and courts, and shes keenly involved in the campaign for the restoration of the towns Christ Church.

Its all part of community life, she says. When youve got nice people working

together, you can get some great things done.Other Macedon Ranges winners announced

e community event of the year was Macedon Ranges Healths annual colour run/walk.

Kyneton theatre veteran Alan Stone was named arts ambassdor, while community achievement awards were presented to Riddells Creek mother, business owner and teachers aide Deb Mitrevics; to Mount Macedon dawn service stalwart Dr Frank Donovan; and to Woodend and District Heritage Society treasurer Rosemary Wilkinson.

What was the feeling when you found out youd won the award?

It was a real surprise. I was quite taken aback by it, really.

ey asked me to come along to the function and I thought that was a little strange. Its not about me though with these things youre representing the people around you.

e show is a perfect example of what volunteering is all about.

ere are so many people there whove been there for years, they know their stu, they look aer the same section each time ultimately they love what they do. Its a great thing for the community, and they get a lot out of it too.

How old were you when you rst became involved with the show?

I competed when I was a kid. My father was an ex-president, my uncle was an ex-president and my grandfather was involved too.

Over the years I watched them all do it and then I decided to give it a crack myself.

Ive been on the committee for about 22 years now.

What do you enjoy most about the role?

I think its great to see the people involved getting satisfaction out of it. e way they stick at it, its a good indication that they are enjoying it. Weve got a really great relationship with our volunteers and everybody involved on the committee. Everyone just works together and we work it all out as we go.

MY PLACESunbury Agricultural Show president Tony McMahon was named the towns citizen of the year during the Kiwanis Clubs annual Australia Day breakfast at the Village Green. e dairy industry veteran talks with Matt Crossman.

Youve lived in Sunbury your whole life, what are some of the biggest changes youve seen in that time?

Number one is the roads. ats probably the biggest. e growth here has been huge. ey only started doing subdivisions in the late 1950s I was probably ve or six when that

started. In those days, there were probably two or three builders in the whole town and, whenever a new house was going up, everybody would go and drive past to have a bit of a look at what was going on.

What do you see as some of the challenges ahead as the population continues to grow?

Transport is a big one. We need more strategic carparking, so people can walk to where they want to go. We also need to seriously look at what were going to do with the railway crossing, because the station these days is probably in the wrong spot. If it was further up towards the Diggers Rest end of the town, the trac would run freely and so would the trains.

Summer comes with its own ofcial SunSmart mantra slip on a T-shirt, slop on the sunblock, slap on a hat, seek some shade and slide on the sunnies.

Sunglasses are too often forgotten and, simply put, they arent just for looks. Sunglasses are integral to maintaining healthy eyes and in some cases can save our sight.

Dr Lewis Levitz, of the Vision Eye Institute of Victoria, says long-term exposure to UV light can severely damage eyes.

UV light can do serious damage to your eyes in the short and long term, and a sight issue caused by sun damage can be permanent, says Dr Levitz.

There are several ailments caused by sun exposure acute photo keratopathy (sunburned corneas), cataracts, eye cancer, macular degeneration, pterygium (a eshy growth over the cornea) and pinguecula (a thickened spot on the white part of the eye).

Here are seven tips for choosing sight-saving sunglasses

    1. Check the classication. There are four categories, and all cosmetic sunglasses will be labelled accordingly.

    2. Be colour wise. Darker lenses may look more fashionable, but that has nothing to do with their level of protection.

    3. Bigger is better. They might not be your idea of fashionable but wrap-around sunglasses are the best when you spend lots of time outside.

    4. Cost considerations. You dont have to spend hundreds on a pair of good sunnies; some can be as cheap as $10 and come with good UV protection.

    5. To polarise or not to polarise? Polarised glass can cut down on glare and haze, but may not have high UV protection so remember to check the category.

    6. Start young. The sooner parents encourage the wearing of sunglasses, the more likely children are to avoid future eye issues.

    7. Make them a daily accessory. The sun can be harmful, even on a cloudy day, so always have a pair of sunnies handy.

    HELP FORROSACEA AND FACIAL REDNESS

ROSACEA IS VERY COMMON AND CAN BE SUCCESSFULLY MANAGED.

It is marked by redness and flushing of the face with or without red bumps and pimple like lesions.

Visible blood vessels (capillaries) can develop over time causing persistent redness.

The skin is often sensitive and easily irritated.

Having rosacea can be embarrassing and erode confidence and self esteem. Take heart though because it is manageable and treatable!

We are very experienced in managing rosacea. We can address all aspects of treatment from skin care advice to medical therapy and laser treatment, which is very safe and effective.

If you need help or guidance please ask your GP for a referral to our doctors OR book directly with Belinda Fraser to discuss laser treatment and to get you started with a management plan.

Dr Belinda Welsh knows from rst-hand experience a thing or two about dealing with a condence-sapping skin condition.

Having rosacea in the past, Dr Welsh says, gives her invaluable insight into how her patients may feel and is also partly what drove her choice to specialise in dermatology.

I really understand how a skin condition can seriously affect self-esteem and, in some cases, cause general wellbeing to take a big nosedive, Dr Welsh says. But when I saw that the right treatment, using a medical response, was so effective, it propelled me into the eld so I could help others.

Dr Cara MacDonald, a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists and senior consultant at St Vincents Hospital (as is Dr Welsh), adds considerable expertise to a team that comes with mile-long credentials. Another important team member is Mr Chris Bennett, plastic surgeon and skin cancer specialist.

The entire team, which also includes nurses and dermal therapists, is one that focuses on specic patient needs. Were patient listeners. Everyone has their own story, with differing needs and reactions to their problem. A rst consultation is all about absorbing an understanding of a patients concerns,

then formulating a plan of attack to bring about optimum outcomes.

So what does the clinic provide? Skin, hair and nail disease treatments; skin cancer surgery; skin and mole checks; non-surgical sun damage treatment; laser treatment for hair removal, age spots, birthmarks and scars; ultraviolet light phototherapy for acne, psoriasis and eczema; and Botox injections for excessive sweating.

Dr Welsh says the clinic has a cosmetics treatment menu, too, that includes Botox, dermal llers and skin peels, which are preceded by a thorough consultation and assessment.

Our skincare product range Rationale is medical grade and the preferred cosmeceutical brand of Australian dermatologists and plastic surgeons. Its been around for 20 years and is a product composed of skin-identical ingredients, which deliver a trademark luminosity. And its available for purchase at the clinic.

Within a hop, step and jump of the train station and main street shops, this western red cedar dwelling celebrates a rustic style, with cathedral ceilings, exposed beams, lots of timber and replaces. Four bedrooms in the main house include two with walk-in wardrobes, the main having direct access to a shared bathroom. Two more are upstairs in a charming loft style. The carpeted lounge room has a wood heater, while a family-meals area with a replace includes the kitchen with electric cooker. A rustic studio, which has two bedrooms, a living room with replace and a carport, is a great teen or guest retreat. Mature trees, lovely cottage-style gardens and a brick-paved circular driveway, along with sheds and barbecue area, are other drawcards on the block of about 2848 square metres. The house is now tenanted and shows a good return.

    OPEN 7 DAYS

WE ARE AUSTRALIAN!We have celebrated Australia Day in a variety ofways. The traditional Aussie BBQ of sausages inbread with a dash of tomato sauce is always popularbut we also see more sophisticated BBQs, seafoodspreads, a weekend away perhaps or a gatheringof friends and family for a game of cricket. AustraliaDay leads to the question who is an Australian? The Indigenous people of this great land were thecare takers for thousands of years before the arrivalof Europeans. The tall ships appeared over thehorizon bringing a moterly crowd indeed, convicts, adventurers, those seeking their fortunes in a strangeand harsh environment. In the 1850s the cry re-sounded Gold! And so began another influx ofpeople seeking riches from our streams and belowthe ground. The first and second Wars broughtrefugees from War torn Europe and from England tosettle in a country which offerofferof ed hope and peace. Ournation welcomed the Jews escaping the horrors ofthe Holocaust, the Italians, Greeks, Poles and more, all bringing with them a taste of their own culturesand religions and we happily embraced such delightssuch as pizza, baklava, pirogi. Now we see more andmore escaping War from Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan aswell as those from South Africa and Europe seeking abetter life. Who is an Australian? A difficult questionin-deed but to me an Australian is the person wholoves, respects and values this wonderful land, aperson who abides by our laws and strives to build abetter life for all. I hope you all enjoyed your AustraliaDay I also hope you all are Proudly Australian.
