READINGS FOR THE WEEK

LIVING the

WORD

LIVING the

WORD

THIS WEEK’S FOCUS: REVERSING A CURSE

The understandings of impurity in Jesus’ world were reversed by His teaching and healing. Ultimately He would reverse the scourge of sin and even death itself.

FIRST READING God did not make death, nor does God rejoice in the destruction of the living (Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24). The Book of Wisdom addresses one of the most difficult questions that has troubled philosophers: How could a good God allow suffering and death? The answer given is that God did not send these things into the world. They are the result of sin. Sin is a participation in death, for it is a choice against life. Therefore, the appropriate punishment for sin is to taste the consequences of what one has chosen when one sins: suffering and death. SECOND READING

Your abundance should supply the needs of the others (2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15). The Church of Jerusalem was much poorer than other Christian communities. Paul collected funds from all over Asia Minor and Greece. In taking up the collection, he was reminding the members of the community of the example of Jesus. Although Jesus was God and therefore had every right to exercise His divine prerogatives, He became poor for our sake. Should we not be willing to share some of what we have in excess with those who do not have enough?

GOSPEL Your faith has saved you (Mark 5:21-43 [21-24, 35b-43]). In the ancient world there were three different types of miracles: nature miracles, exorcisms, and healings. In this Gospel Jesus calms the storm at sea (nature miracle). There is an account of a great exorcism. At the end of the Gospel reading we hear a healing story. There are in fact, two healings. The smaller healing is that of the woman with the hemorrhage, and the larger one of the raising of the daughter Jairus. Mark put these miracles together to show us that Jesus had the power to do all things. REFLECTION In the Law of Moses, menstruation was understood to bring on “ritual impurity” that, among other things, made women unable to participate in the religious life of the community until one had stopped menstruating and undergone a ritual of purification. Moreover, this ritual impurity was thought to be “contagious,” so that anyone who touched a menstruating woman was also thought to be ritually impure. So the woman in Mark’s Gospel who had suffered from a hemorrhage for 12 years had been excluded from the life of her community and from human contact for that entire period of time. In addition to her physical suffering, what we might call her “social suffering” must have been immense. She was literally untouchable. When she summoned the courage to touch Jesus, He too should have come ritually impure. But instead of her impurity being transferred to Jesus, His healing power was transferred to her and she was healed. The logic of impurity’s “contagion” was reversed. Just as Mark uses Jesus’ stilling of the storm to show His divine power over nature, here He uses the story of Jesus’ healing of the woman with the hemorrhage, and the story of the healing of the synagogue official’s daughter that surrounds it, to show Jesus’ power over death, sickness and exclusion. In the Book of Wisdom we read that death entered the world through the envy of the devil. Death too is like a contagion that spreads throughout the world and has infected us all. Just as Jesus reverses the normal course of ritual contagion in His healing of the woman with the hemorrhage, so too He reverses the contagion of death in His passion and resurrection. He lets death grasp the edge of His death into life. As Paul says in the Second Letter to the Corinthians, Christ gave up the riches of immortality and shared our death, so that He could enrich us who were dead in our sins.

The Holy Spirit is given to the Church as the source of strength to conquer sin. Only God has the power to forgive sins, because He alone sees right into the human person and can measure human responsibility completely. Sin remains, in its psychological depth, a secret which God alone has the power to enter, in order to say to a person the efficacious words: “Your sins are forgiven you, you are pardoned.” MASS WITH YOUTH HRADEC KRALOVE, CZECH REPUBLIC, 1997 The modern technological world can offer us many pleasures, many comforts of life. It can offer us temporary escapes from life. But what the world can never offer is lasting joy and peace. These are the gifts which only the Holy Spirit can give you. A PRAYER FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY

HEAVENLY FATHER, let me take this holiday celebration to thank you and resolve to always do my part to keep my country strong and overcome its weaknesses. Teach me to meditate on the teachings of Your Son

who brought us a message of peace and freedom and instructed us to live as brothers and sisters. His message took form in the vision of our founders as they fashioned a nation where people might live as one. May this message live on in our midst as a task for people today and a promise for tomorrow. Amen.

This Fourth of July let us remember to pray for our country and all those who have served and those currently serving in the military to defend our freedom. We especially remember:

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY In today’s Gospel we see how in faith, Jarius asked Jesus to heal his daughter and how Jesus then answered his prayer. In prayer we also come to know that we are loved by God, and in that trust we ask for healing for ourselves, our loved ones and all those who are suffering.

This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brought the love and care of

Jesus to the poor by assisting families, providing in food, for utility, rent and other bills, etc.

Thank You!

L ike the wailing mourners at the little girl’s

bedside, we sometimes give up and give in to death as the logical conclusion. Jairus’ love for his daughter enables him to risk his considerable standing in the community to approach the controversial rabbi Jesus. Through such complete and unconditional love – like the love of God our Father for us, His children – we can lift up the fallen, heal the sick and suffering. Jesus shows us the life and hope we can bring into our world through the influence of God and the goodness we all have inside of each and every one of us.

For Adults: When have you felt enriched by a sacrifice you made for another?

CATECHIST CORNER

Why did Jesus show so much interest in the sick?

Jesus came in order to show God's love. He often did this in places where we feel especially threatened: in the weakening of our life through sickness. God wants us to become well in body and soul and, therefore, to believe and to acknowledge the coming of God's kingdom. Sometimes a person has to become sick in order to recognize what we all, healthy or sick, need more than anything else: God. We have no life except in Him. That is why sick people and sinners can have a special instinct for the essential things. Already in the New Testament it was precisely the sick people who sought the presence of Jesus; they tried "to touch Him, for power came forth from Him and healed them all" (Lk 6:19). Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are called to invite, inform, inspire and ignite the community in our faith journey by fostering stewardship through sharing of our gifts of time, talent and treasure. We are further called to share our faith through active evangelization and charitable outreach.
