Today, we begin our annual Forty Hours Eucharistic Devotions. This is a period of prayer and praise centered on the Most Holy Eucharist, the Blessed Sacrament, and corresponds to our patronal feast day. The origin of the devotion known as Forty Hours is obscure but there is historical evidence that it began in Milan, Italy. St. Charles Borromeo, the Archbishop of Milan, wrote about and supported the practice of continual prayer before the Eucharist. Locally, the practice of Forty Hours was begun in the then Diocese of Philadelphia under the leadership of the fourth bishop, St. John Neumann. The plan was to have this period of worship and prayer, intercessory and thanksgiving, ongoing continually. One parish’s Forty Hours Devotions would end and another one would begin thus establishing a perpetual act of adoration throughout the diocese.
Remember that during Neumann’s administration there was the beginning of an immigration move-ment from Europe reaching its apex in the early 20th century. There was also at that time a groundswell of anti-Catholicism. In some of the original colonies of our country, anti-Catholic bias was legislated, and anti-Catholic sentiment was strong. The worst of it produced a violence that caused death and the destruction of parish churches in Philadelphia, New York and other cities throughout the country.
The [Louisville, KY]cathedral was invaded by the mob and was saved from destruction only by the prudence of Bishop Spalding, who, in a letter to Bishop Kenrick summing up the results of the day's proceedings, said: “We have just passed through a reign of terror surpassed only by the Philadelphia riots. Nearly one hundred poor Irish have been butchered or burned and some twenty houses have been consumed in the flames. The City authorities, all Knownothings, looked calmly on and they are now endeavouring to lay the blame on the Catholics” (see "Life of Archbishop Spalding", by J.L. Spalding, p. 185).
The Know-Nothings, as they were called, instigated the violence. When arrested, if the law enforce-ment of the day even did that, they were questioned by authorities only to respond that they “know nothing.” The Know-Nothings actually emerged as a political party nominating a candidate for the Presidency. In the face of that violence, Neumann established the Forty Hours Devotions as a powerful form of intercessory pray-er.
This year we will expose the Blessed Sacrament after the 11:00 AM Mass on Sunday and then gather for Solemn Vespers each evening on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at 7:00 PM. I ask that you take time on these beautiful late summer days to come to church and sit with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Pray with oth-er parishioners who gather at the evening Solemn Vesper Service and Benediction.
Ours is not a safe and secure religion demanding only 45 or 50 minutes on a weekend. To take it seri-ously is to walk a challenging path. The first step on our journey of faith may be a small one, not a quantum leap. Nevertheless, small steps are necessary to move us toward the goal of professing and witnessing to Jesus with our lives as well as our lips. In our efforts to make the journey of discipleship to which we are called, we need strength - a spiritual strength - that is provided for so beautifully and mystically in the Holy Eucharist. Please take advantage of these holy days and spend some time with Jesus, inviting Him to be a part of your journey.
Faithfully,
Msgr. Diamond

St. Katherine Day School, Wynnewood, PA: Saint Katherine Day School opened in 1953 and was the first day school for special needs students in the United States and the first of its kind in Philadelphia. Saint Katherine Day School serves students with unique needs and multiple impairments. They are the only Archdiocesan school that provides a school program for students with multiple impairments. Saint Katherine strives to meet the needs of students ranging from ages 5-21 years old with an I.Q. below 70. Programs at the school consist of life skills classes, functional academics and vocational training. The school also offers occupational therapists, physical therapists, personal care assistants and speech therapy.
Because of donations from the Catholic Charities Appeal, students who would not be able to afford tuition are able to receive the specialized education their needs require. Donations also help provide important technology, supplies and transportation for the school.
We encourage you to share this information on your parish web-site and with your parishioners.

40 HOURS DEVOTION The Forty Hours Devotion is a special forty-hour period of con-tinuous prayer made before the Blessed Sacrament in solemn exposition. Of course, the focus of this devotion is on the Holy Eucharist.
“I myself am the living bread come down from Heaven. If anyone eats this bread, He shall live forever; the bread I will give is my flesh for the life of the world”
(John 6:51). The number forty has always signified a sacred period of time: the rains during the time of Noah lasted 40 days and nights; the Jews wandered through the desert for 40 years, our Lord fasted and prayed for 40 days before begin-ning His public ministry. The 40 Hours Devotion remembers that traditional “forty-hour period” from our Lord’s burial until the resurrection. Actually in the Mid-dle Ages, the Blessed Sacrament was transferred to the repository, “the Easter Sepulcher,” for this period of time to signify our Lord’s time in the tomb. The Forty Hours Devotion can be seen almost like a parish mini-retreat or mission. This year Fr. Patrick Welsh, pastor of St. Mat-thew’s in Philadelphia, will lead us in three evenings of prayer and reflection. An on-line sign up opportunity is available at the link below for you to select your day and time for adoration: www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0D48AAAC28A5FF2-40hours1 Sunday, September 15 11:00 AM Mass Exposi on at the close of Mass 12 noon Rosary 4:45 PM Repose Blessed Sacrament for 5 PM Mass 5:00 PM Mass Exposi on at the close of Mass 7:00 PM Evening Prayer / Homily / Benedic on Repose Blessed Sacrament

Letter to a Suffering Church: A Bishops Speaks on the Sexual Abuse Crisis. Feeling hurt, angry, or demoralized about the sexual abuse crisis plaguing the Catholic Church? Our parish wants to help, and that’s why we’ve ordered 400 copies of a new book titled Letter to a Suffer-ing Church: A Bishop Speaks on the Sexual Abuse Crisis by Bishop Robert Barron. We invite you to pick up your free copy after any of the Masses the weekend of Sep-tember 14 & 15. We have a lim-ited number of copies, so please only one book per family. The parish will then host two evening meetings on Tues-day, October 1st and Tuesday, October 15th at 7:00 pm in the PLC. Sr. Patricia Talone, RSM will be our moderator who will guide us through a discussion of Bishop Barron’s book.

Eucharistic Adoration As Pope Leo once wrote, “Rosary is the most excellent form of prayer and the most effica-cious means of attaining eternal life. It is the remedy for all our evils, the root of all our blessings. There is no more excellent way of praying.” Have you been thinking about doing something extra for your prayer life? Consider being a Permanent Adorer and praying to Jesus, face to face for your all your needs. PLEASE call us to schedule a time that’s convenient for you. We need an extra person for Friday mornings and afternoons. We would like to have 2 people with Jesus at all times. Contact:
