How We Are to be Receiving Holy Communion

The life of the Church revolves around the sacraments, with the Eucharist at the

center. In the Sacrament of the Eucharist, we receive Christ Himself and are

nourished by His body and blood. Receiving the Eucharist changes us, unites the

community, and strengthens the Body of Christ.

In our Maronite tradition, communion is distributed by way of intinction, this

means the priest dips the consecrated host into the consecrated wine and

communion is given on the tongue. For reasonable reasons, other arrangements

can be made with the approval of the bishop. Due to the health circumstances,

communion will only be given in the hand and under one form (the Body of Christ,

consecrated host).

What we need to know when approaching communion:

• Approach communion with reverence. You are about the receive the body

and blood of Christ.

• While waiting for the person in front of you to receive recollect yourself for

a moment and bow your head as a gesture of adoration.

• Step up when it is your turn.

• Upon approaching the priest to receive communion, extend the hands with

the left hand extended and the right hand under the left in support making

a thrown for the King of Kings.

• Do not remove your hand until the Priest has placed the Sacred Host on

your hand and removed his hand.

• The response of “Amen” is given to the proclamation “The Body of Christ,”

and the Host is received.

• Once you have received the Sacred Host, consume the Host immediately

and directly in front of the Priest and then reverently move on.

• Remember “Who” you are receiving.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem (4th century) explains

the way of receiving communion in the hand:

"When you approach, do not go stretching

out your open hands or having your fingers

spread out, but make the left hand into a

throne for the right which shall receive the

King, and then cup your open hand and the

Body of Christ, reciting the 'Amen.' "

The centrality of the gospel is the cross; but fortunately it does not stop there. Jesus shows us the way and gives us the

power to overcome sin, despair, and death. Just as the first disciples were commissioned to bring the good news of

salvation to all the nations, so, we, too, are called to be witnesses of the resurrection of Jesus Christ to all who live on the

face of the earth. Do you witness to the joy of the gospel to those around you?

After Jesus announced that he wants to go to Judea, the disciples said to him: “Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to

stone you, and you are going there again?” What are the obstacles today that obstruct me from imitating Christ? What am

Before death, desperation, while facing the departure of a loved one, Martha kept her faith in Christ! Are we able to do so

in our daily lives? Despite the problems that we face, the pain and the suffering that we experience, do we keep our faith

in the Lord or is our faith subject to exterior circumstances?

In every action, Jesus had always one purpose: communicating life to us. Are we trying in our lives, as Christians, to imitate

Jesus? Are we trying to give life to all the people we meet? When and why we fail to do this?

Thursday: (Acts 1:1-14; Mk 16:15-20 ) Liturgy for Bjorn Aune req. by Regina Aune

Jesus' departure and ascension into heaven was both an end and a beginning for his disciples. While it was the end of

Jesus' physical presence with his beloved disciples, it marked the beginning of Jesus' presence with them in a new way,

through the Holy Spirit. We have been given the task to be ambassadors for Jesus Christ. Do you witness to others the joy

of the gospel and the hope of the resurrection?

Friday: (Phil 4:8-14; Jn 3:12-15 ) Liturgy for Susan Garza, req. by Joann Reed

Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit that we may have power to be his witnesses and to spread and defend the gospel by word

and action. The Holy Spirit gives us his seven-fold gifts of wisdom and understanding, right judgment and courage,

knowledge and reverence for God and his ways, and a holy fear in God's presence (see Isaiah 11). Do you thirst for new in

the Spirit?

and happiness of a life surrendered to Christ?
