MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

Dr. Peter Kreeft leads Diocesan Women's Conference on "Angels and Demons" March 15! Dr. Kreeft, Professor of Philosophy at Boston College and Kings College and Mary Ann Hayes, MSW, will be speaking at the 2014 Women's Conference on

Saturday, March 15, 2014 at St. Joseph's in Herndon. This year's conference is titled "Angels and Demons: Who They Are and How They Influence Us." Bishop Loverde will celebrate the opening Mass at 9:15am. Continental breakfast and lunch are included. Online registration is now available! Space is limited. No registration at the door. Cost : $40 on or before February 14th, $50 after February 14th. Register online at www.arlingtondiocese.org/women.

Today is February 2nd and many people will travel to a rural town in Pennsylvania to see if a groundhog will see his shadow. Again, I’m dating myself but does anyone remember the movie Groundhog Day? In this movie a weatherman named Phil Connors (played by Bill Murray) goes to Punxatawney, PA (a short drive from our motherhouse in Loretto, PA) to cover the story of the weather predicting groundhog. What happens though is that he suddenly finds himself living the same day over and over again. After much indulgence in hedonism, he begins to re-examine his life and his priorities. The pleasures he once sought don’t provide him with any long term satisfaction. So often in our lives we find ourselves in the same predicament that the character Phil Connors was in. Perhaps not living the same day over and over again, (although the tediousness of our work can, at times, make us feel that way) but that the pleasures we once sought don’t fill us up, instead they leave us empty. As an example, I’ve seen commercials for a cell phone provider who, for a fee, allows one to trade up their phone every year instead of waiting the two year period of the contract. We continually seem to need the newest and the best. We’re not happy with the model we once had, but now we seem to always need bigger and better, new and improved. We think bigger and better will somehow satisfy us. But eventually we find that material ‘things’ don’t really satisfy us. (As a Franciscan it’s easier for me to look at this with a food analogy: material things are like junk food; it tastes good at the moment, but has no real nutritional value to fill us up.) So what does fulfill us? I think the answer lies in the Church’s readings for the Feast we celebrate today. We celebrate what is known as the Purification of Mary. According to Jewish laws after a women has given birth to a male child she was to go to the temple 40 days after and offer sacrifice. She was to bring a lamb (of if poor a turtle dove) for a holocaust offering (which represents a total surrender to God) and a turtle dove for a sin offering (and, no, Mary didn’t need to bring a sin offering, she was sinless, but just as Jesus didn’t need to be Baptized, Mary was obediently following the laws of the Temple). But back to the question of what fulfills us. Looking at both the characters of Simeon and Anna, I think that in their years of living, they came to the understanding that having things didn’t fulfill them. Instead they learned to look forward to the fulfillment of God’s promise of a savior. It is in their looking and believing that God would remain faithful to his people (who often were unfaithful to Him), that allowed them to recognize Jesus as that promise of God. In fact, Simeon’s response recognizing Jesus as the light of the nations is where we get the tradition of blessing Candles (Candlemas Day), as candles enlighten things so that we can see clearly. Again, they were looking for the promise of God in their lives. They stopped looking for ‘things’ to fulfill their lives, but rather looked to God. What is it we are looking for? An easy life? A bigger TV? A newer car? Are we simply setting our sights on acquiring more things? Or are our eyes open to seeing God working each day in our lives?
