COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT TAKING TIME TO REFLECT Fr. Richard Leonard makes the observation that when anyone asks how we are many of us will respond by saying how busy we are or how exhausted we are. The reality is that we live very frantic lives as we struggle to meet family and work commitments. This is not conducive to finding inner peace. Nor is it a good basis for creating living and respectful relationships. We all know how important it is to have an inner peace and to be truly loving people. To achieve this we need to take time to stop and reflect. For most of us that time can only be found at the start or the end of very busy days. The rewards for taking some time to pray, reflect and be ‘mindful’ cannot be underestimated. If we are more at peace within ourselves, more thoughtful and more loving, our relationships will be stronger and our lives so much happier. This is certainly a challenge in a fast paced world. This is what Pope Francis said about these pressures in a recent talk: “Life is often wearisome and many times tragically so… work is tiring; looking for work is exhausting. And finding work today requires much effort. But what is most burdensome in life is not this; what weighs more than all of these things is a lack of love. It weighs upon us never to receive a smile, not to be welcomed. Certain silences are oppressive, even at times within families, between husbands and wives, between parents and children, among siblings. Without love, the burden becomes even heavier, intolerable… Jesus wants our joy to be complete! He said this to the apostles and today he says it to us. Here then, is the first thing I would like to share with you… and it is a saying of Jesus: Come to me, families from around the world, Jesus says, and I will give you rest, so that your joy may be complete. Take home this word of Jesus, carry it in your hearts, share it with the family.” The Director of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Lismore, David Condon, acknowledges that ‘families make the greatest contribution to the identity, wellbeing and education of our children”. This is why the Diocese is giving parents the opportunity to develop their understanding of the important partnership they have with the Catholic school. He says that “our parents are doing everything they can to give their children the best chance to grow into well-rounded adults, capable of living worthwhile and meaningful lives. You are not alone in this life-giving responsibility. We in Catholic education want to walk with you in friendship and support”. In October of this year there will be “Proclaim Parent Gatherings.” This will be an opportunity for parents to join us in partnership to assist children to have the best chance for a life full of love and hope. NEWS FROM THE ACTING ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL This week Year 8 and 9 students were able to come together to be part of a Reflection Day led by Youth Retreat Coordinator, Chris Doyle. Reflection Day was certainly a great event judging by the responses of Year 8 and 9 students. One of the reasons for the retreat being so positive is the willingness of students to be open to new experiences and willing to take advantage of what is being offered. While at St Joseph’s Regional College students have the opportunity to develop their faith as they grow and experiences like the Retreat provide that opportunity. I thank Ms Nora Swain and the Leaders of Pastoral Care for their organisation and the teachers and students for their positive involvement. New Leadership Roles for the Remainder of the Term and Term 3

On behalf of the College community I would like to congratulate Mr Sean Jennings who will be filling the new leadership role for the remainder of Term 2 and weeks 1 to 4 of Term 3. Mr Jennings will fill the role of Leader of Catechesis and School Evangelisation during Ms Nora Swain’s Long Service. We wish Mr Jennings the very best in his leadership role and additionally wish Ms Nora Swain a very restful break during her leave

I would also like to thank the casual teachers for their fantastic work this term, particularly those who have done blocks of time for permanent staff on Long Service Leave.

Best wishes for year nine for a successful excursion As Year 9 venture off to Canberra next week I wish them all the best for a successful excursion. REPORTS and AWARD CEREMONIES

Year 11 reports will be issued Friday 27th June after the Award Ceremony in the College Performing Arts Centre (PAC) at 9.00am. Year 7-10 Academic Award Ceremonies will be held on Friday 18th July. Students will receive their Semester one report at the completion of the ceremony. These reports contain valuable information on student’s progress so far, and will identify areas upon which students need to concentrate in order to improve further in the second half of the year. I would strongly encourage all students and parents to read this report carefully, and be willing to implement any suggested strategies from the start of next Term. The times for the Year 7-10 Award Ceremonies will be confirmed in next week’s newsletter.

Students are given awards based on effort and application in all subjects. Listed below is a brief explanation of the awards:

EXCELLENCE AWARD: Given to students in Years 7 -10 who receive an “A” in the Common

Grade scale. (Year 11 students must be in the top 10% to receive this award).

APPLICATION AWARD: Given to students who have consistently applied themselves in

their Approach to Learning

EXCELLENCE AND APPLICATION: Awarded to students when an excellent academic

standard is achieved with consistent application.

OUTSTANDING APPLICATION AWARD: Students who receive Application Awards in all, or

all but one, subjects receive this award.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: Students in Years 7 and 8 who are nominated for

Excellence and Application awards in more than 6 subjects will receive this award. In Year 9

and 10 this award goes to students who have achieved Excellence and Application in more

than 5 subjects.

COMMUNITY SERVICE: Awarded to students who have participated in 10 hours or more of

community service throughout the semester.

As we reflect on the past term and achievements, often attained through students using their talents, I include the following prayer for reflection. We can use our unique talents to make a difference to others, however we all have one talent that can certainly change lives.

Japanese Exchange Students – Host Families needed

An expression of interest is sought from families to host visiting students from the Sorachi region of Hokkaido in the northern island of Japan. The Hokkaido Australia Society request that one student be accommodated per host family with the buddy being of the same gender. In this way, each student can undertake the same challenge of immersing him/herself into a family without being compared with another student. The Hokkaido Australia Society has been conducting non-profit education projects for more than 30 years, believing that it is important for students to have the experience of visiting another country, exchanging with students of similar ages, attending schools and interacting with families to broaden their knowledge and understanding of life and a world outside of what they are used to. This project is an opportunity for the Japanese students to be exposed to other customs, other languages and other people through having the opportunity to attend school for one week. It is also an opportunity for St. Joseph's students to gain practical experience through communicating with Japanese students of similar ages and being exposed to a different aspect of the language they have chosen to study. The program is fully voluntary and students are aware that without support from families of the College allowing them into their homes for one week that this opportunity would not be available to them. This is the planned schedule for this year:

Monday 28th July –Friday 1st August Attend school

Saturday 2nd August With host family

Year 11 Street Retreat Good luck to our Year 11 students who have headed to Brisbane this week with Mrs Gilbert for the annual diocesan Street Retreat. Our students will join students from other secondary schools throughout the dioceses to work in a variety of facilities focused on a range of social justice initiatives. We wish them well and look forward to the students sharing their experience at our next school assembly. Year 8 Retreat Day – Chris Doyle On Tuesday, 17th June 2014, Year 8 participated in a Retreat Day, facilitated by the amazing Chris Doyle. The students laughed, sang, danced, wrote songs, built human structures, choreographed, hugged, affirmed each other, made decisions and laughed some more as they focussed on the importance of being selfless - not selfish. Chris’s unique style of combining music, humour and pop culture to ignite the spirit of the students certainly brought many out of their comfort zones and left the students (and staff) with a closer bond by the end of the day.

Many thanks to Chris Doyle and other star performers of the day – particularly Father James who belted out a great rendition of the INXS hit “Never Tear Us Apart” and Benen Livermore with his soulful performance of “Smells Like Teen Spirit“. Change of Report Descriptors

In Week 1 of Term 3, students in Years 7-10 will be receiving their Semester One reports. As part of the College’s ongoing commitment to excellence in education and the effective feedback to parents on their child’s academic progress, the approaches to Learning descriptors have been modified to be more reflective of the student’s performance and progress in class. Helping kids in Papua New Guinea Amy Webb, one of the Youth Ministry Officers at St Paul's High School, is embarking on a mission’s trip to Papua New Guinea this school holidays. She will be spending some time in Port Moresby and Mt Hagan, helping to run equipping schools for local youth leaders, rallies for young people and spending time with orphans. If you are able to donate any pencils, crayons, kids clothing, school books, colouring-in books, any kind of school accessory/stationery or toys (teddies etc.), she will carry these things over to those who need it in Papua New Guinea. If you could drop these into the school office, St Agnes’ Presbytery Office or to the Youth Ministry Officer at your school before Wednesday 25th June, your support would be very much appreciated.

Year 10 Nambus Visit

On Thursday, 19th June our Year 10 students were again lucky enough to have a visit from the Nambus. They listened to Vietnam veteran’s war experiences, viewed displays and had a hands on experience with military items from the Vietnam War. Year 7-11 Debating

Our debating students from St Joseph’s Regional College attended the inaugural Combined Schools Debating Day, hosted by St Columba Anglican School on Thursday 19 June. Our College was fortunate to have several teams competing in this prestigious event and I must commend them for their exemplary behaviour in both the preparation of their debates and their studious efforts when at St Columba for the day. Under substantial pressure, these students represented us with pride and their studious, cooperative approach is noteworthy. Prepared debate topics such as, “Single sex schools are better for students”, “Social networking does more harm than good” and “Sometimes free speech should be restricted” allowed our students to showcase their research skills, their application of logic and their persuasive, oratorical skill in their respective debates. Successful groups were then chosen to compete in an impromptu debate –Topics such as, “That reality TV does more harm than good” and “That education should be free” tested the debaters’ ability to think quickly and form reasoned, logical arguments under time pressures. All teams performed well on this day. I must make special mention of our Year 7 team (Joshua Dietrich, Jazmin Lindsay-Farelle, Toby Fraser and Amelia Stennett) who succeeded in their final debate to take the title of first place in their section. Year 8’s team of Emily Shelley, Jess Gardner and Paul Olsen performed admirably on the day. Year 9’s Cane Wilkins, Jo Cutler, Courtney Newell and Bill Robinson should be similarly proud of their efforts. Congratulations to the Year 10 team of Miranda Cropper, Mary Shelley, Kaes Besseling and Maddi Sinclair who were the victors in their division. Congratulations should also be given to the Year 11 team of Darcy Howard, Eleanor Wright, James Searle and Grant Shea, for their impressive second place in the highly contested senior debating section. It should be noted that the spirit of the day is to foster interest and excellence in debating across all schools and that, whilst the victories and losses above are of interest, students gain much from the process of organising their own logical arguments and skilled rebuttal and also from being exposed to other skilled debaters around our local area. The Senior Soiree is a showcase of the talented work that our Year 11 Creative Arts Students produce. It is a celebration of the work produced by our Year 11 Drama, Music and Visual Art students and gives us a chance to reflect on how truly gifted our students are. It will be held in the Creative Arts block on Wednesday the 25th of June, beginning with the art exhibition at 5pm, and the performance starting at 6pm.

Complimentary canapes and sweets will be served from 5pm by the Year 11 Hospitality students. There will also be tea and coffee available.

WALKATHON – 8th August 2014

This year’s Walkathon will be held on Friday, 8th August 2014 and is a major fundraising event for the College, giving students the opportunity to raise funds for items they feel will enhance their learning and make their time at SJRC more enjoyable. In recent years money raised has purchased outdoor seating, BBQ tables and chairs, sporting and musical equipment, comfortable lounge style seating for the library, F5 Open Learning and Student Services rooms. In addition to these items $$$$ have been put aside over the past three years toward the purchase of a College mini-bus to be used for sporting, cultural and community service activities. This will in turn reduce the cost for parents.

All students are strongly encouraged to raise money and next week will be given their Sponsorship Envelope. There will be prizes for students who raise the most money in each year group, PCs that earn over $1000, the highest earning PC and all students who raise over $50 go into the draw for a $500 gift voucher at a store of their choice. Every $50 earns an extra ticket in the major prize.

Families and local business are also welcomed to sponsor with monetary donations or with suitable prizes for the students. Please contact Mrs Joanne Williams in the office if you would like to become a sponsor. Alternatively if you would like to discuss a major sponsorship of a College Mini-Bus please phone Mr Chris Kalchbauer at the College.

Term 1 Photography Competition – My Town This competition was widely supported across the whole College community, and it has been a very difficult task making a decision as to the winners. Crowd power was used to find “Peoples’ Choice” winners, and they were determined to be Anais Bleasdale with her beautiful photo of the beach and headland as the winner with 38 votes, and Jye Rousell with his peaceful rural depiction was the runner-up with 34 votes. . The Judging panel chose two winners - Jamieson Williams with his image of a dense fog, and Andrew Hyde with his creative view of a distant town with water as the feature.

Congratulations Andrew and Jamieson.

Highly commended entries were received from Jackson Vercoe, Josh Burridge, Jack Handley, Emily Camilleri and Tom Walker, and they are showcased below. Congratulations to these photographers and to all who entered – the standard was exceptional across the board and makes judging very difficult. Mid Coast Careers Market

Congratulations to Ben Schneider who won the Master Builder’s Association of Oxley Division Prize for his accurate construction project on the day. He was the successful winner from nearly 200 participants in this competition. His prize was presented to him by Mr Ian Scanes, Head Teacher Building Trade, Southern Area, North Coast TAFE.

Congratulations also to Danika Ahern. Her involvement and participation on the day saw her successfully win the Mid Coast Connect prize of a $50 voucher for JB Hi-fi.
