FROM FATHER PAT'S PEN

I have been delighted during the last year to meet

with a small group of people who have been tasked

with working on one of our remaining objec�ves of

the long range congrega�onal development plan.

That objec�ve is to evaluate how we do liturgy with

an aim of enhancing our worship experience, and

to consider if there is a need to offer addi�onal

liturgies in order to a ract new members.

Our task force on liturgy has now prepared an

instructed Eucharist which we will be sharing

during weekends in September and October as one

way of enhancing our worship experience together.

An instructed Eucharist is a means to educa�ng the

congrega�on on the various components of our

liturgy, about their purpose and some on their

development and rela�onship to the whole liturgy.

We will be offering these snippets of informa�on in

the context of the actual liturgy, but only doing a

por�on of the service at each of the four weekends

we have scheduled so that everyone is not

overwhelmed by informa�on. Our hope is that this

will enhance everyone's experience in worship.

The teaching components of the instructed

Eucharist will be printed into an instruc�onal

pamphlet for ongoing use once we have completed

the presenta�ons in October. It is our hope you will

discover new ways of making the liturgy more

meaningful for you.

There will be other opportuni�es for further

educa�on about our liturgy, and those will be

announced as we move through the winter

months. We will look forward to your involvement

and any feedback you would offer.

ST. LUKE’S GUILD Monthly meetings resume Tuesday, September 1 11 a.m. in the Parish Hall

The next St. Luke’s Guild mee�ng is scheduled for

Tuesday, September 1, at 11 a.m. in the Parish Hall

with lunch to follow. Barbara Webb will begin

discussion and planning for December’s Snowflake

Faire. Carl Bessent will present a program with his

guide dog, Norice.

All women of St. Luke’s, visitors, friends, and women

of faith are welcome to join the Guild. We are a

diverse group of women of all ages who meet

together in fellowship to support the efforts of the

clergy and other service groups of the church. We

meet on the first Tuesday of each month (September

-May) at 11 a.m. for a luncheon in the Parish Hall.

The Guild raises money through the Snowflake Faire,

which is an annual vendor event, Treasure Trove

rummage sale, and luncheon held on the first

Dinner Circles Are Starting Up Again!

A:er a summer break, it’s �me to sign up for

Dinner Circles for September, October, and

November.

Dinner Circles consist of six to eight people

who meet once a month for three months for

a potluck meal at the home of one of the

members. Dinner circles are fun, they’re

delicious, and they’re a great way to get to

know others at St. Luke’s…whether you are a

newcomer or an old hand.

Fall Coffee Hour Hosts Needed

Can you help us with a coffee hour following the 10:30 a.m. service this fall? A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall for dates in September through December.

Orientation to the Episcopal Church Beginning Sunday, September 6

As an ongoing effort to welcome and orient

new members to St. Luke's, Fr. Pat is offering

a course to persons who want a basic

background to the tradition and spirituality of

the Episcopal Church. The course will

comprise three separate sessions and will lead

to membership and service within the

community of St. Luke's. It may also serve as a

refresher course for those who already are

members.

Fr. Pat will offer these courses on Sunday

September 6, 13 and 20 at 9 a.m. in the Alison

Library. Each class will last one hour.

Getting To Know...EVE ARMSON

Eve was born in Nelson, B.C., and arrived in Coeur d’Alene about a year

ago. She studied Interior Design at Parson’s School of Design in New York

City before launching a successful design business in Sea le.

A:er ten years in St. George, Utah, where her daughter and son-in-law

owned a business called “Cowboy Living,” Coeur d’Alene seemed like the

ideal place for her and her dog, Luke, to be close to B.C., where she s�ll has

family. Eve looks forward to her daughter, son-in-law and their two children moving to Coeur d’Alene some

�me in the near future.

Eve told me that her first friend in Coeur d’Alene was Gwen Letson. “She took �me to call me in Utah a:er

visi�ng St. Luke’s for the first �me,” Eve said. It didn’t take Eve long to become involved at St. Luke’s,

joining the Pain�ng with a Friend group and St. Luke’s Guild, as well as modeling clothes for the Bishop’s

Guild fashion show this past spring. By the way, did anyone no�ce that well-dressed cowgirl waitress at the

St. Luke’s Men’s Western Ca lemen’s Steak Dinner?

We are grateful that Eve has chosen St. Luke’s as her church family and look forward to ge!ng to know her.

Belonging Weekend, Saturday & Sunday,

As a part of our ongoing congregational development effort, we want to provide regular opportunities for newcomers to make a public commitment in joining, or belonging to, the community of St. Luke's. The next such opportunities will occur at all services during the weekend of October 3-4.

A Liturgy of Belonging has been developed for use on these occasions. This will be the time for our current congregation to embrace and support our newer members, and for the latter to pledge their involvement as active participants within our community.

Anyone who would like to become a member of St. Luke's and would do so within the context of our common life is invited to be presented during any of the weekend’s services. Please contact Father Pat (208-659-2325) or the church office (208-664-5533) to indicate your desire.


Got Joy? Care to Share It? Join the Bryan Elementary Partnership

St. Luke’s and Bryan Elementary School offer

an opportunity for you to be a mentor and

role model to a child. Ten percent of Bryan’s

census (approximately 30 students ranging

from kindergarten through fi:h grade) are

iden�fied as “at risk” due to academic, social

or behavioral challenges. You could be a

posi�ve part of a young person’s life.

Let your light shine! Enter into a rela�onship

with a child who is hungry for posi�ve

a en�on and uncondi�onal support.

Whatever your passion — reading, math,

art, gardening, biking — you can be an

inspira�on to a youngster. Volunteers’

interests, e.g., subject ma er, grade level,

availability, are matched with the needs of

the children. Training is provided and

includes training to safeguard children. Also,

a background check is performed at the

school office on your first volunteer day.

Join us in this most wonderful adventure.

THE PRAYER CHAIN

Members of the Prayer Chain pray faithfully at your

request for anyone in need of whatever sort. We

use e-mail for those members who prefer it;

however, we s�ll use the telephone tree to send out

new names for those who would rather get them

that way.

On each Wednesday, at exactly 10:30 a.m.,

members will stop what they are doing to take a

moment to pray for those on the list. It is exci�ng

and humbling to be praying to God at the same �me

for the same people and the same needs.

To add a name to the Prayer Chain so that prayers

can be said for someone in need, remove the name

of someone no longer in need or become a member

of the Prayer Chain, please contact Anne Salisbury

FPNI’s 8th Annual Cardboard Box City

Friday-Saturday, October 9-10

Please join Family Promise of North Idaho (FPNI) in the fight against homelessness and save the date for the 8th Annual Cardboard Box City event on Friday, October 9. The City will be located at Community United Methodist Church, 1470 W. Hanley Ave. in Coeur d’Alene.

The Cardboard Box City shines a light on the plight of homeless families by giving participants a brief taste of what it would be like to be homeless. Each fall participants build a city of cardboard box shelters which they sleep in for the night. The event includes dinner, breakfast, prizes, and entertainment. Funds are raised through pledges collected by participants and by business sponsorships. Individual participants are asked to have a personal goal of $125 per person. In addition to raising awareness, the event produces much needed funds to keep our program going.

This event is a chance to give back to the community, help raise awareness, and raise funds to help us help families in need. It is a chance to be the difference. Volunteers are needed, too.
