Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 14, 2018

Hello,

My name is Alex Hernandez and I am studying to be a priest for the Diocese of Knoxville, Tennessee with Bishop Richard S ka. I was raised in Florida but moved to Tennessee with my parents and we have been living there for 15 years. I have been coming to Kenrick Glennon Seminary since August of 2011, when I entered the seminary out of high school. It was a big and in mida ng step for me in my faith life, but I pushed on through with the support of my family, the parish communi es back home and most importantly with Christ's grace guiding me. This summer I am hoping to be ordained a deacon. If I could choose any superpower it would the power of omni-lingualism, meaning that I could understand and speak any language in the world.

Dear Parishioners of St. Mark’s,

Thank you for the kind welcome to your parish over the past month and a half! It has been great visi ng with you briefly a er the Sunday Mass celebra ons and at the fall fes val. You have certainly made me feel welcome and at home! As Father Hambrough men oned in the first weekend, my name is Ben Armentrout. I am a second year Theologian at Kenrick studying for the Diocese of Kansas City- St. Joseph in Missouri. I grew up in Salisbury where I a ended St. Joseph Catholic School for 9 years. Upon comple on of grade school, I a ended High School at Salisbury R-IV. A er High School, I went to Benedic ne College in Atchison, KS for one year. Upon entering the seminary for the diocese of KC-SJ, I started my studies of Philosophy and the Liberal Arts at St. Gregory the Great in Seward, Nebraska. This year marks my fi h year at seminary and

my second at Kenrick. The first me I thought that I was called to the priesthood was in second grade as I a ended the first Mass of a newly ordained priest. At the same me, we were blessed with a new parish priest who encouraged the parish in its spiritual journey. A er years of learning the faith and encountering God in prayer I decided to join the Seminary. I am s ll fairly certain that this is the path God is calling me down! Some of my hobbies include hun ng, fishing, sports, chess, and reading a good book. I am very thankful for my parents, my family, many priests God has placed in my life, and for the support of so many generous people. This year I look forward to serving the parish in the liturgy on Sundays and fulfilling the apostolate of taking Communion to those who are unable to make it on Sundays. I appreciate the prayerful support you offer personally and as a community to help form the other seminarians and me to the priesthood of Jesus Christ! Please feel free to talk to me a er Mass on Sundays!

Hello everyone,

I am Deacon Emmanuel Lopez, originally from Mexico City but I am studying for the Diocese of Kansas City Saint Joseph. At the age of fi een, I met some young missionaries who were working at my home parish and they invited me to join the youth group and I went. They taught us biblical courses and we went through sacred scriptures from the History of Salva on to the Sacraments. It was a helpful tool for my voca on. In the group, we did our apostolate visi ng the sick in hospitals; giving food and clothes to poor families, and the best thing….we visited a hospital of lepers. This was the best and most powerful experience I had that convinced me to answer God’s call. At first I didn't want to go because I thought, “What if I´m not polite with these people? I do not want to hurt them.” Anyway, mo vated by my parents, I went to that place and it was just

wonderful. I was ready to bring them comfort and peace and share with them happiness. But guess what? It didn’t happen the way I thought because they were the ones who gave me peace, comfort and happiness. God was there in all His splendor, calling me. I started going to Mass every day in the morning which I enjoyed a lot because my pastor, Fr. Juan Valle, is such a holy priest. Each day his homilies were just what I needed to hear. Moreover, I started doing my holy hour of adora on every day, so by this

me, 2002, a er I talked with my pastor who was my spiritual director, I was sure I was ready for the seminary and I entered it. I joined a religious community called Missionaries Servants of the Word. I did all the regular studies in this seminary plus a few years of missions all over my country and in Cuba. In April 2011 I had an accident with my right foot. For this reason I le the seminary and joined again in 2014, but now in the diocese of Kansas City Saint Joseph. Right now I’m in my last year of forma on at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary and with the grace of God I will be ordained a priest on May 25th, 2019 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Concep on in Kansas City, MO. I’m super happy to be here at St. Mark’s and I’m looking forward to serving you.

Dear Parishioners,

This week the students and teachers will be

participating in Red Ribbon Week. This is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States. This week offers parents, teachers, and our DARE officer to take an additional opportunity to talk with children about the dangers of drug use.

Our 1st quarter of the school year ends on Wednesday. The teachers will be diligently completing report cards and preparing for Parent-Teacher Conferences next week. Our Scholastic book fair will be setup in the cafeteria later this week and should be open for business for next weekend. Finally, I hope you can join us for the chicken luncheon on October 21st from 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm. The menu sounds delicious!

St. Mark, pray for us. Julie Bingham

Many thanks to all those St. Mark parishioners making donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box (located in the back of Church). Your contributions, which totaled $1,661 in September, allow us to continue to serve our neighbors in need. In September, St. Mark’s St. Vincent de Paul spent $2,978 serving 16 families in need.

St. Mark’s continues to support the Affton Food Pantry. In August and September, parishioners donated 27 bags of canned goods and other items. Please look for the black container marked “Food Pantry”. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely, St. Mark’s St. Vincent de Paul
