Traditionally, landfill sites have been used to bury of all typeswaste collected from households that had been placed in dust-bins, black-bin liners etc, to larger household items. When thispractice first started little thought was given to ‘what happenswhen the landfill sites are full’. This has already happened insomeway as Lean Quarry is being used a site to dispose of wastefrom the Plymouth area.It is necessary, not only to be aware that the use of landfill sites isstrictly limited, but more importantly, to play an active part inensuring what landfill space is available is used only to dispose ofun-recyclable waste.Disposing of waste whether recyclable or not should be done verycarefully. Normal household waste should be placed in refuse orrubbish bins. If refuse sacks are used please cover them to stopanimals and gulls from opening sacks and getting to the contents.Collection of large household items can be arranged by contactingCornwall Council. It may also be possible to reuse larger house-hold items, the organisation in such cases the organisationRe:Source should be contacted. It is also possible to have garden waste collected, such wastemust be placed in special sacks available from Cornwall Council. There is also a household recycling centre at Connon Bridge,

Cont from page 4.East Taphouse. This site can be used by the public to dispose ofhousehold and garden waste. There is also a financial reason for reducing the use of landfillsites. In the near future Cornwall Council will be set targetsrelating to the use of landfill sites. The more waste that isdeposited in a landfill site the larger the tax bill will be for CornwallCouncil. This could mean that the larger the tax bill, the lessmoney there will be available for basic and core services providedby Cornwall Council. Kerbside recycling collections are untaken inmost parts of the Parish on Fridays. History Snippit by Jenny Wallis
The secrets of the 2011 Census will not be revealed for 100 years! We will never know if the couple down the road were living in sinor if anyone actually claimed to be Cornish! I went to LiskeardLibrary to look at the information gathered in 1851 for our parishwhich then included the Barbican and Kellow right across toHessenford and Seaton.
The 1851 Census took place for the night of 30th March andcollected the names and ages of households and their relation-ships and place of birth. It also surveyed the numbers of deaf, blind, dumb and lunatic inhabitants and recorded occupations.
St Martins-by-Looe was agricultural. Most of the population wereagricultural labourers. But we managed to record a dumb farmer,a blind basket-maker and a deaf pauper – no lunatics! Otheroccupations have now passed into country lore – a miller, ablacksmith, a canal boatman and a limeburner. A lad in Great Treewas apprenticed to a wheelwright and a nurserymaid lived in thevicarage. One of the three poor families living on the edge inSeaton was a cordwainer, something surely belonging to a Ken-neth Williams’ sketch! Not a lot of call for men with an NVQ incordwaining these days – you can’t get the leather!
I had a look at No Man’s Land - in Morval. Six households wererecorded. All were born locally except Thomas Syms who camefrom Lostwithiel and married a local girl, Ann. Her widower fatherobviously lives next door. He is 75 and was a mason. His name isHenery Soady and Ann’s youngest is called Henery Soady Syms!Another single occupant is the widow Edgecombe who was alabourer’s wife. William Night is still working on the land at 57. His49 year-old wife is Abigail ; daughter Mary, 22, is a dressmakerand 9 year-old John is a scholar. The neighbouring Jays – Franc-es and Ann – in their early thirties have two under-fives but thereis a hint of scandal as 14 year-old Jane belongs to Ann. Childrenstarted school at 4 and left at 13 to become agricultural labourersor home assistants. Margaret aged 16 is recorded as ‘unwell’.

VERYINTRIGUING!
This year there arefour unusual dates –1/1/11, 1/11/11,11/1/11 & 11/11/11.That’s not all… takethe last two digits ofthe year in whichyou were born, nowadd the age you willbe this year and theresult will be 111 foreveryone! For example, Harrywas born in 1957and 57+54=111.Good eh! This year,October will have 5Saturdays, 5 Sun-days and 5 Mon-days – this happensonly every 823years.These particularyears are known as‘Moneybags’.
Before leaving No Man’s Land it is interesting to dwell on the entryfor Mr and Mrs Toms! Mr Toms was born in Morval in 1810 andmarried Mary Ann from Pelynt. Now in his early forties he has fivechildren under 14. And yes! He was christened Thomas! I wonderif they called him Tom or Tommy? Tom Toms! I wonder whatbecame of the family!

STROKE:*Remember the 1st Three Letters..... S. T. R.
During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assuredeveryone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...shesaid she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. Whileshe appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herselfthe rest of the evening.Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had beentaken to the hospital - (at 6pm Jane passed away.) She hadsuffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify thesigns of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Somedon't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this.A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. Hesaid the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, andthen getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, whichis tough.
RECOGNISING A STROKEThank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Readand Learn!Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortu-nately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victimmay suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail torecognise the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystandercan recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:S * Ask the individual to SMILE.T ** Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE(Coherently) (i.e. It is sunny out today.)R* Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergencynumber immediately and describe the symptoms to the operator.
New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your TongueNOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick'out their tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side orthe other that is also an indication of a stroke.

They are limits are NOT targets! Now that spring has sprung, the annual holiday period will not beclose behind. This of course, means that the much renowned visitoror tourist, will once again be using the local roads to reach theiraccommodation, beaches or local attractions.Whilst we might be familiar and comfortable with using the narrowroads within the Parish, confronting vans, tractors etc, visitors mightnot be. To reach this part of the country it is necessary to usemotorways and dual-carriageways, also they might not be suchnarrow roads and type of traffic in the area they live in. Therefore, inorder to keep the roads safe over the coming months please makeallowances for those who are not so familiar or comfortable with localroads and traffic. Most of the roads used to reach the Monkey Sanctuary, Millendreath,Seaton etc, are governed by the national speed limit of 60 mph. Itshould be remembered that this is a ‘limit’ and not a ‘target’ that hasto be met each time you drive on the road. The Highway Code statesthat you should always drive to the conditions around, the drivingconditions on the roads within the Parish cannot realistically supporta driving speed of 60 mph, so please watch your speed. It has also been reported to the Parish Council that people have beenseen using mobile phones whilst driving. Whilst this is illegal andpunishable by a fine and a licence endorsement, it may also beconsidered to be dangerous if you are not in proper control of vehicle.Drivers should be also be aware that people do walk the roads of theParish, and as such, should be given due consideration by slowingdown so they can be passed safely. Also remember that roadsidegrowth may restrict the movement of walkers. So by using the roads within the Parish carefully, sensibly and legallyeveryone should have an enjoyable and safe journey.
