April Newsletter
The month of March was a very busy month of activities and holidays and sadness.
On March 15, 2018 we said goodbye to Ms. Melody Ferrante our Lunch Supervisor
who had helped out and been a support for St. Mary of the Angels for over 34 years.
We continue to pray for her and her family. Here is a picture of Ms. Ferrante (right)
and Ms. Carpanzano (left), another of our Lunch Supervisors who retired in June who
also gave over thirty years of service to our St. Mary of the Angels Family.
The month of April signals the beginning of Crunch and Munch, a time when we en-
courage all of our students to bring healthy snacks of fruits and vegetables in reusa-
ble containers so that we are supporting our health and we are supporting the envi-
ronment. Tallies will be taken each day in all of the classes to record how many stu-
dents are bringing in healthy snacks that are nutritious and filling. We look forward to
excellent results and we hope that everyone can learn from the experience.
Along the lines of good health, we will also be having Dental Screening on April 23, 24
and 30 of the month and a Hearing and Vision Clinic on Thursday, April 26th. We are
encouraging all students to take advantage of these opportunities that promote well-
ness. Our entire staff will also be trained by our school psychologist and social worker
on the board program “The Mentally Healthy Classroom” that looks at student men-
tal health and adds elements of support for students who are struggling.
Our Parent Council will also be hosting two Thursday evenings of information with
Toronto Public Health Nurse Stephanie Forestell on the topic Kids have Stress Too, an
opportunity for parents to come and learn more about their child’s mental health
and the stresses that are a part of our world today. The workshop is open to all par-
ents but it is designed for students ages 4-10. We look forward to seeing you there.

March was the Month of Forgiveness
Congratulations to our students who went out of their way to be kind and for-
giving with others so that they could learn from their mistakes.
Hearing and Vision Clinic Thursday, April 26th
We will be hosting a Hearing and Vision Clinic in
our Library for all students. More information will
be sent home closer to the date. This is a chance
for you to check your child’s hearing and vision,
something that can change from year to year.
Dental Screening
Toronto Public Health will be checking our teeth on April 23, 24 and 30th . We look forward to learning
more about oral hygiene and health.

Fraga’s Fours to Laser Quest
On Wednesday, March 21st, the
Gr. 4s went to Laser Quest. First
you have to get the gear on, Neil
(aka Fairy Godmother) and some
employees along with Ms.
Araujo and Ms. Pontello helped
us get it on. After, you have to
activate your laser by putting the
silver part on the green sensor.
You wear a vest that has sensors
on it. To tag someone the laser
has to hit one of the sensors. We
learned that the laser beam is
invisible without the fog because
the laser light needs moisture so
we could see it. Without the
moisture we could only see the
end point. The laser beam trav-
els in a straight line and doesn’t
bend. When we were to scared
to get out in the open we used
mirrors to reflect the laser beam
to hit the sensors.

Work in our Library
Money from the Pic-
tures with Santa and
from our Pizza sales
has gone towards en-
hancing our Library.
We have purchased
rugs and pillows, bird
houses, twinkle lights,
encouraging sayings ,
stools, new books on
Science and Aborigi-
nal authors and we
have had the artist
Candace Bell in to cre-
ate a reading bear
mural and an animal
mural. Thank you to
our parent communi-
ty for their generosity
which allows us to use
these funds to give
back to the school so
that all of the stu-
dents benefit. Thank
you to Ms. Ruffolo our
amazing Library Tech-
nician.
New Lines in our Parking Lot and School Yard
On Monday, April 16 we are hoping (depending on the weather) to have a company in to re-line the parking lot for
Staff Parking and to draw new lines and play areas in our back yard. There will be re-defined basketball courts, two
soccer courts, two squares for games, new hopscotch lines and circles for volleyball. We will come up with another
date if it rains that day. If any parents can find “Poof” balls (that is the company name, soft, squishy balls that help
make contact in our yards safe) please let Mrs. Pontello know where, it has been impossible to find them this year.
Stations of the Cross with
our
Grade 8 Leaders
On Holy Thursday Ms. Machado
Dias’ class led Grades 3-8 in our
gym in the Stations of the Cross.
They did a wonderful job and
our students were attentive and
thoughtful during the experi-
ence. We are so proud of our
leaders and all of our students
and their respectful behaviour.
Pita Pit
We will be sending new Pita Pit forms this
week for our last day of the previous or-
der is Wednesday, April 4th.
Head Lice Prevention
We want to let you know about the common problem of head lice. Head lice can affect anyone, but most often it affects younger school-age children. Head lice are parasites. They are considered by health officials to be a nuisance when they are difficult to eliminate. They are not a health hazard and are not connected in any way with long hair, dirt, neglect, or not being clean. Head lice can spread quickly from head to head when a group of children have close contact school, camp, day-care. They can be spread by sharing hats, brushes, combs, etc. Prevention of head lice is everyone’s responsibility. Cooperation and prompt action on the part of parents, school staff, and the public health department will help to reduce the inconvenience to children. We encourage parents to look at their children’s hair on a regular basis. When checking for nits (eggs), the hair should be dry. A convenient time for a visual check may be just before washing your child’s hair. If you find any head lice or nits (eggs), obtain and use a medicated head lice shampoo or medicated cream rinse from your pharmacist, and contact the school to inform then that your child has been treated. The school needs to be informed so that other parents and school officials can be advised to check the heads of others. Finding and treating head lice early will stop your child from getting a severe case and stop the spread of head lice to other children. Further information and reference about head lice can be obtained from the school or local office of the Toronto Public Health Department by calling 416-338-7600.
Crunch and Munch
Healthy eating and snacks are the focus of the school for the month of April. Our classes are asked to
bring in healthy and crunchy snacks. Stay tuned for more information on our results from the month.
We would like this healthy eating to continue for the entire year.
Kids Have Stress Too Workshop April 19th and 26th
Thanks to the efforts of our Catholic School Parent Council, we will be hosting Toronto
Public Health Nurse Stephanie Forestell who will be leading us in two evenings of infor-
mation and support on Thursday, April 19 and Thursday, April 26. Both evenings will run
from 6-8 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
This workshop is a chance for parents to learn with
other parents about how to help their children han-
dle stress and learn to be resilient and confident
young people. The workshop is two evenings with the learning building from one
workshop to the next. There will be information on the signs of stress, the rea-
sons for stress, strategies to help your children handle stress and help for both
students and parents. You must commit to both evenings to be a part of the
workshop. Availability is based on a first come, first served basis. We will be cap-
ping our numbers so that the parents attending can get the most out of the work-
shop. Sign up sheets will be sent out the first week of April.
If your are concerned about your child’s stress level and would like to learn more about how you can help your child
become strong and resilient, please come and join us. The forms will be sent home this week. Refreshments will be
provided both evenings. Forms are due back Friday, April 13, 2018.
