My ambition when I arrived at school was to make students realize that French was not only something that you can see in books, but an authentic, well-spread speaking language. Just by hearings questions in the corridors, I had won my bet: “Is she French? “; “She can’t speak English...?”; “Is she related to Madame André?” The most common question from students was “Is she a teacher?” Here is my answer: No, not yet. But that’s what I want to be. I deeply appreciated the warm welcome and the support of all the staff during this year. Because more than just being a first professional experience that confirms my desire to become a teacher, my year in St Nessan’s was a beautiful human experience. Through the work I achieved here, I discovered a new culture and a new edu- cational system; I created new friendships and came to learn more about myself. There were ups and downs, but I hope I could have given you, all what you, students and staff of St Nessan’s, gave me this year. Thanks to every person who involved me in the life of school and made me feel useful. A big thank you to the French Department who gave me the opportunity to live this experience, and to all my Leaving Certificate stu- dents with whom I spent most my time here. I’ll never forget the chance I had to stay with you during these eight months. Hope to come back soon in Ireland, or to see you all in France! Avec toute mon affection A bientôt, Clémence. Arriving at the same time in a foreign country and in a new school for my first concrete working experience was a big deal for me.At first a terrifying undertaking, my stay in Ireland turned out to be one of the most enriching experience in my life. TY recently attended The Fresh Film Fes-tival,2012 at the Lime Tree Theatre, Mary Immaculate College. The group really enjoyed the unique selection of beautiful and quirky films which presented the lives of young people as lived around the world. There was a very interesting discussion of the films after the event which afforded the students a very real opportunity to look carefully at how films are made and the way in which they can create a meaningful story for their audience. The stu-dents learnt how to read a visual image such as a film in the same way as they have learnt to read a book or a play. Two of our students, Jenny and Jodi attended a workshop with the Young Irish Film Makers and produced a short film at the end of the day. The class thank Ciadra (Fresh Film Fes-tival) for her interest and individual attention on the day.Ms M Toomey.

Reading Film.

As part of a whole school initiative to develop literacy, Minister Jan O’Sullivan, launched an E-Reading programme during her recent visit to the school . The purpose of the initiative is to enhance and expand the reading experience for students in the library, the classroom and ultimately as a fulfilling life skill. Having done some pilot work with students it was obvious that they were very keen to use the readers and, unlike some of the teachers, they had no problem with the technology. As access to ma-terial increases it is hoped its expand usage of the readers into textbooks. In addition to the novelty effect of this for students, the benefits of lighter schoolbags, ease of storage of mate-rial and reduced costs would be felt by parents and students alike.Mr John Gale, Librarian.

Green Flag Committee

On Thursday 17th May 2012, representatives of the Green Flag Committee, Kelly –Anne Blackledge and Cillian Cassidy were awarded on behalf of St. Nessan’s’ Community College the school’s first international Green Flag. The Students were accompanied by Mmd. Clemence Depois, and Ms. Dennison. What an exciting day they had. On arrival to the Silver Springs Hotel in Cork the students met Mr. Darragh Bee and Mrs. Ellen Bin. Next an official photograph was taken to mark the official occasion. The ceremony itself was electric and all the students vibrated with anticipation of the importance of the occasion. The students of St. Nessans’ – Kelly Anne & Cilian represented the school with honour and pride. On Thursday they held in their hands the much sought after International Green Flag, which they presented on Friday to Mr. E. O’ Brien (Principal) Mr. M. Treacy (Vice Principal) on their return to school exhausted from the previous days award events.I will take this opportunity to thank every single person who helped out in any way large or small in making this fantastic achievement such a whole school success. WELL DONE EVERYBODY – take a bow!!!!Ms D.

Recently the LCA 1 group completed a task and as part of the task they exhibited their work for the examiner. They produced a banner made up from much batik. This ban-ner will be used as part of their graduation ceremony next year.Ms. Murphy

‘Be Cool - Stay in School’ SMILE School Completion Programme

On Friday 25th May,the 3rd Year school tour headed of for Lough Gur-In the Countryside, uurrhh! Mr J was definitely outside his comfort zone, whereas all our class tutors took it in their stride. But, hey what a day. the sun shone and the 3rd Years swam. The day began with’ a gentle walk’ - Ms Toomey’s words –which gradually got harder and harder as the climb took its toll on even the fittest of 3rd Years. Only one member of the team made it to the summit-and that turned out to be a teacher! OH the shame, but we blamed it on our P.E. teachers! Lough Gur is one of Ireland’s archaeological and historical gems. The beautiful and enchanted lake lies 21 km south east of Limerick city and we must have visited it on the best day of the year-29 degrees at lunchtime. From the level surrounding countryside it unfolds its beauty its placid waters and rugged hills – a fairyland of stone circles, ancient habitation sites, megalith tombs, crannogs and castles. So lots of hill walking, swimming and not forgetting bird watching!! Nice costumes girls.Massive thanks to Mr J and to our class tutors, Ms Toomey, Ms Aherne, Ms Campbell Cuddihy - We will miss ye.Keith Meade and Calvin Prendergast, 3DE.

5th year trip to national print museum

12 of the 5th year art (options) class travelled to Dublin to attend a workshop with The National Print Museum in April. They worked with a retired printer/typesetter Con who brought the museum to life with practical demonstrations of composing typeface and printing. The students participated by composing and printing their own written words, which they had been working on as part of the Rachel Joynt public sculpture for St Nessan’s school. They then printed individual pieces some which they will keep and more which will be framed for the school. Rachel had set up this workshop and was there to document the pro-cess. The students worked hard all day and their attitude and manners were excellent. They really engaged with the process and kept up enthusiasm all day from 11 till 3.30. The museum, Rachel, and Con the printer mentioned how impressed they were with the group behaviour and eagerness to learn. Con said they had taken exceptionally fast to a medium that takes people normally a lot longer to learn. Con remarked that St Nessan’s community college can be very proud of this group of young people. well. It was also a first for the museum who had not worked with this age group before. They had not worked in such a creative manner either where students used their own words. The students remarked how they enjoyed the process and were very well behaved on the trip down home. All in all a great day.

On Thursday the 24th May the Transition year group accompanied by Ms. Carew headed off to the Hub to attend a workshop given by Dell engineers on Hardware. The group really enjoyed looking at the internal circuit boards of a machine and learning about all the differ-ent internal PC components. In the afternoon the Class visited the Dell Command Centre in Raheen. Much amazement was expressed at how impressive the centre was with one student saying, “It is like the Star Ship enterprise”. The students were given a tour of the Centre and in each department they were given a demonstration and a talk about the Command centre daily activities. They got a taste of meetings in the Fish bowl, viewed Dells list of open sup-port Items from around the World, walked around the huge server room and got to use some of Dells new Technologies from 3D graphics and medical software to Alienware Gaming Laptops. A great day was had by all. Dell expressed an interest in taking on St. Nessan’s stu-dents for Work Experience next year, which really got the attention of some of the TY boys. Many thanks go out to Vinnie, John and Claire from Dell for their enthusiasm and attention throughout the day.Ms. Carew

Transition Year dell workshop

1st year Gary Dillon recently stayed late to make a banner to wish the 6th years well for their graduation. This was indeed an impressive gesture for a 1st year to do for his fellow students. Well done Gary.
