St. Nessan’s Art Students are supporting a Pitch For Shane. Almost three years ago Shane Geoghegan , a young rugby player from Limerick was murdered in a case of mistaken identity. In his memory and in memory of all innocent victims of crime his family are asking people to make a small terracotta figure . These figures will be assembled shoulder to shoulder at an Exhibition in City Hall on the 9th November, the 3rd Anniversary of Shane’s death. Shane’s Aunt visited the school and gave a little talk to students on the project. Moving to the more sedate - Cuisle, the Limerick City Interna-tional Poetry Festival kicked off on Friday with poetry reading by Paul Durcan and Carolann Duffy, both of whose work is included in the LC English Syllabus.TY attended this event with Ms Toomey on Friday morning 14th October at the Belltable. Paul Durcan read from a large volume of work especially his recent publication, Life is a Dream; Forty Years of Reading Poems 1967-2007.More importantly Paul spoke to the students after the event and stressed the importance of reading and writing every day. He encouraged them all to keep a diary and write down your thoughts, ideas, observations daily.Paul happily posed for a photo afterwards and all the Transition Year were delighted to meet such a distinguished Irish Poet especially as his work is included in the Prescribed Leaving Cert English Syllabus. Thanks to all who contributed to our student display table on our opening night, all the bits are winging their way back to their rightful owners. Thanks to all the 3rd Years, esp James D, Calvin, Sarah, Aoife, Naomi, Shane, Leanne and Jessica who set up the display and dismantled it effortlessly and promptly. Thanks to TY students, esp Jodi, Robert, Ryan, Alyson, Megan, Donal & Kate who served up tea and biscuits to the thirsty hordes and did the wash up afterwards! And not forgetting the student council who made a great impression. Recognition in some shape or form is on the way - a free lunch Mr O Brien?? The place looked great ,many parents commenting not just on ‘ the state of the art facilities’ but also the warmth of the welcome from Principal and staff. Ms M Toomey.

Just to say thanks...

They sat together in sunlit grassInnocent at just seven years oldHe said close your eyes and hold out your handShe did as she was toldHe ran off to the nearest gardenTo pick her a single white roseShe sat in the grass with her arms outstretchedAnd her eyes still firmly closedHe placed the flower inside her palmAnd told her she could lookHer eyes flickered open, her face lit upHe smiled as her hands shook“I love it,” she said, “it’s beautiful”Tears welled up in her eyesAs he said “I love you, you’re beautiful,I will never leave your side.”Twelve years had passed and she hadn’t heardFrom him in quite a whileThough she could still hear the sound of his laughAnd she really missed his smileShe wouldn’t blame him if he forgotBut she really hoped he rememberedShe was awoken by knocking upon her front doorOne cold dark day in DecemberShe rushed out to answer, her hair still a messCold nipping at her bare toesShe looked around, saw nobody thereBut on her doorstep a single white rose

The Giggler TreatmentOn Friday 21st of October, 2 teams from 1st year in St. Nessan’s took part in “The Giggler Treatment” table quiz in the libaray at Watchhouse Cross. St. Nessan’s came joint second on the day and were only one point behind the winners from 6th class (Ms.Conway’s class) from Corpus Christi. They named their teams “The Bloody Marys” and “The Flexible Tables”. Ms. Beaumont and I were so proud of our two teams. They answered some very difficult questions on the day including questions about the Eiffel Tower, Dogs, Cream Crackers and of course, “The Giggler Treatment”. We all said that we should have table quizzes in the library more often. Thank you Ms. O Brien for orgainsing what was a great event. Bloody Marys Team & Flexible Table Team members : Brittany Ryan, Kim Kiely, Cillian Cassidy, Nicole Hayes, Mark Angley, Jake Sheehan, Nathan O Brien & Ronan Lau. Ms. Coffey

Just to say thanks...LCA Students and a number of first year students recently used the PR system to practice voting in the Presidential Election. Students were surprised that their number two and three votes came into action after the first Count. In a close contest Michael D Higgins emerged as the choice of St. Nessan’s students for President. We await the real result on the 27th October. Ms. M O’Brien

Transition Year News

Transition Year Students recently paid a visit to City Hall where they met Cllr Jim Long Mayor of Limerick. Cllr Long filled the students in on the duties of the Mayor. They were particularly interested to hear that the Mayoral chain costs in the region of a quarter of a million Euro! Cllr. Long told the group that in 2014 Limerick would have a Mayor directly elected by the people. Then the Mayor would need 60,000 votes approx. to become Limerick’s first citizen. He spoke about receptions in City Hall and the group were glad to learn that there would be one shortly for Na Piarsaigh. He was motivated to become involved in politics at the age of 14 when he became interested in the History of the Country. The Principal Mr. O’ Brien would like to thank the Mayor for meeting our students and for hosting refreshments for them.Ms. M O’Brien

• There is ample evidence of cell phones being a distraction in school.• Small size and inaudible, high-pitched ring tones make cell phones easy to hide and use. It is a proven fact that adults over 30 cannot hear

some of the high-pitched ring tones teens use deliberately for that reason.• Cell phones can be used to cheat, to call the wrong people and to bully classmates.• ‘Happy slapping’ is nothing to do with being happy. It’s a form of bullying where people are attacked and the attack is filmed on a mobile

camera phone. Attackers often share the videos with their friends. These assaults are not only hurtful and upsetting, but they are also illegal.• ‘Sexting’ is the sending or receiving of sexually explicit or sexually suggestive images or videos via a cell phone. A girl may agree to send

a nude photograph of herself to her boyfriend because of pressure from her boyfriend. After the relationship sours, the boy may then forward the photograph to a group of friends who may forward it to another group of friends. By the time the photograph has circulated through a high school the girl may be repeatedly harassed and called names. “Think before you post,” knowing that it is impossible to remove pictures from the internet.

For these reasons many teachers and administrators banned cell phones from school. Protect yourself and your friends. Madame Andre

Munster “A” Schools were the only unbeaten Munster under-age team this season and Stephen Murphy, 6th Year, played a significant part in winning this Introprovincial Series.Munster played 3 games during the series:

• 14th September V’s Connacht, in the Sportsgrounds, Galway • 28th September V’s Leinster, in Musgrave Park, Cork • 5th October V’s Leinster, in Donnybrook, Dublin

Ulster do not participate at this level. The panel for each of these games was:

Forwards:Niall Fitzgerald Villers Captain Andrew Gardiner Gaelcholaiste James Reeves CBS Sexton StreetMichael O’Neill YoughalStephen Carey Clonmel Aaron Hogan YoughalStuart O’Sullivan Midleton College Bryan Moore Midleton CollegeMichael Cooke John the Baptist, HospitalRichard Kingston Bandon GrammarRyan Meaney GaelcholaisteChristopher O’Meara Killaloe

1st Game14th September V’s Connacht, in the Sportsgrounds, Galway

Final score: Connacht 5 19 MunsterThis was a very exciting game with Munster scoring a try by Michael Cooke after 2 minutes which was converted by Tip Delaney. Connacht played exceptionally well after this, but some outstanding defensive work by Munster, ensured that the score at half-time remained at 7 – 0 to Munster. The second half opened very similar to the first, with Munster scoring in the corner through Stephen Scallon, Tip Delaney failing to convert. Connacht responded very quickly scoring an un-converted try, to make the score 12 – 5 to Munster. Munster continued to press, until Kerry Desmond scored under the posts, which Jaco Oosthuysen converted, 19 – 5 to Munster.

2nd Game28th September V’s Leinster, in Musgrave Park, Cork

Final score; Munster 30 - 11 LeinsterMunster – Leinster games always carry that little bit extra by way of the importance of who eventually emerges as winners and this was nodifferent. Leinster played some exceptional rugby only to come out second best in the defensive stakes to a very strong and well drilled Munster side. Both sides exchanged early tries, with Jaco Oosthuysen scoring a wonderful try, breaking from the base of the scrum on half-way, beating 5 tackles, to score under the posts. This was converted by Tip Delaney. Leinster responded quickly to leave the score 7 - 5, to Munster, after 13 minutes. This was quickly followed by a Tip Delaney penalty after 20 minutes leaving the score 10 - 5 to Munster.Leinster responded with a penalty 10 - 8 to Munster at half-time.In the second half, Munster played some outstanding rugby, with tries from Tip Delaney and Jaco Oosthuysen, both converted by Tip, who also added two penalty kicks. Leinster kick a penalty in reply to leave Munster running out as comfortable winners at 30 - 11.

3rd Game5th October V’s Leinster “A” Schools, Donnybrook, Dublin

Final score: Leinster 11 22 Munster This was a totally different game with Munster taking the field in a complacent mood which they failed to shake off until the Mid-way through the second half.Leinster started very well, taking the game to Munster at every opportunity, only to be repelled by some outstanding defence work by Munster. Leinster scored two early penalty kicks to lead 6 - 0, with Munster responding with a penalty kick, to make it 6 - 3, after 12 minutes. Leinster continue to press, until Munster pinched a Leinster lineout on the Munster 22, which they immediately passed out the line, releasing Stephen Scallon, who scored in the corner. Munster, 8 - 6, against the run of play at half-time.Leinster started the second half exactly as they had started the first, retaining posession and driving the Munster team back at every opportunity. The Munster defence withstood all this pressure and on the 58 minute, Stephen Scallon finished off a forwards/backs move, to score under the posts. Tip Delaney converted. Leinster continued to dominate in every department, except on the score board, with Munster defending as if their lives depended on it. Munster where awarded a scrum on halfway, which they won, worked an excellent backrow move, which released number 7 Richard Kingston, who raced in to score a try. This was converted by Tip Delaney.Leinster scored an unconverted try in added time to leave Munster winners 22 - 11.Mr. O’Brien
