On Thursday 21st October 5th and 6th Year Art Students had an enjoyable trip to Dublin. Firstly we visited The National History Museum in Collins Barracks to view the very impressive Irish High Cross Exhibition. Here the students’ sketched and collected as much information as possible about Irish Christian Art, Metalwork, Manuscript Illumination and the High Crosses. After lunch in the city we visited the Hugh Lane Gallery where we had an unexpected view of Francis Bacon’s Studio (as he left it when he died) which was a treat for us all. Finally we visited the Sir John Laverys PASSION AND POLITICS Exhibition. A historical exhibition as it brings both sides of Lavery’s, “Island of Ireland” collection together for the first time. A rewarding and fruitful day was enjoyed by all and valuable learning for the Leaving Certificate Art History and Appreciation exam was achieved. J.C.S.P News

Celebrations and Congratulations to all 2nd years J.C.S.P Students St. Nessan’s JCSP students are about

to receive fabulous new folders. Now all the good colourful, wonderful, creative work can be stored in these folders. Big thanks to JCSP head office and Isabel Baker.

New FoldersRead Read ReadAll J.C.S.P 1st year students are taking part in a new reading pilot programme. This is excit-ing news so look out Mr. Gale, the library is going to be busy next term.

National Game Playing week kicked off with Schools Game Playing Day on Friday 22nd of October. All 1st year students were asked to bring in a board game to play during class and the response was staggering. Draughts and chess and pictureka proved to be the most popular and games were shared and swapped within the classroom. Each class had a session in the lecture rooms playing board games and all 1st Years played on in their various classes during the remainder of the day. The lecture rooms were set up with board games from the libraries ample stock.Word games such as Boggle, Upwords and Hangman can be a fun way of developing and reinforcing literacy skills, particularly spelling ability and vocabulary development. All the teachers brought in board games from home and used them as a learning tool in the classroom.Hasbro is running this initiative and will be offering every school that participates a voucher for 6 free board games. School Game Playing Day helps to showcase how playing board games can enhance your child’s learning, all while they have fun.

2nd Years attended a D.E.A.R. workshop with Sinead Hourigan (Watch House Cross Library) on Tuesday 19th October, 11.15-11.55am in the demo room. Ms Toomey highlighted D.E.A.R. which is a great way of promoting reading across the whole school. The idea is that, at a set time everyone stops what they are doing and reads for 30 minutes. It is a shared experience, which gets people talking about books and reading while conveying a strong message that the school believes in and supports reading. Our Principal, Mr. O Brien supports and endorses D.E.A.R., so everyone feels they can legitimately stop regular classes for that half an hour., Sinead Hourigan the chief librarian at Watch House Cross Community Library spoke about reading as a hobby for life, benefiting a student far beyond the classroom and Ms Campbell-Cuddihy tied it all together under the JCSP banner, stressing that the more time a student spends practising reading the better the reader s/he becomes. The students were also reminded of all the various in-house reading events, the J.C.S.P. “Make A Book” exhibition,” “Who Wants to be a Word Millionaire”, “Reading Challenge “.Every box was ticked. The students reacted favourably to the discussions with many of them joining the library on the spot and taking up the many book recommendations.22nd October was the last day to sign up for MS Readathon-1DE and 2DE have already started reading. This is a motivational reading pro-gramme again encouraging students to read and to enjoy reading and see reading as a hobby for life, benefiting a student far beyond his/her classroom and school days.

Permanent TSBOn the 3rd of November T.S.B visited our school to discuss interview techniques, jobs, C.V preparation, planning, interview questions and dress code with the transition year class. They also commented on the current economic crisis and the fact that school leavers now have to be more focussed and switched on with regard to Job applications and interview techniques. The banks are still hiring but obviously now have the pick of the crop. It’s down to us, the students to work hard in school and to impress with our curriculum vitae At the end of the talk. TSB distributed gifts, pens and books. The talk was very informative and interesting and we thank Permanent TSB for their time North Side Learning HUB. Every Tuesday at 9am and Thursday at 1pm, Transition year students pack up and head for the HUB. Once there we begin our programme on creative writing and film making. The Hub gives us a presentation on film making and hints and tips on writ-ing articles. Next we compose our own stories and type them up. It is very challenging and creative and it gives us an opportunity to write about things that interest us.

Hooked on O laighléisOn Friday 1st October, all 2nd Years attended a reading by Ré O Laighléis at Watch House Cross Community Library. The readings were in both Irish and English, so we got a nice bi-lingual flavour of his work. His best selling novel, Hooked dealing with teenage drug addic-tion was a first in the Irish language and was so successful that an English version has recently been published. Class Tutors accompanied the 2nd Years along with Ms. Ware, Ms. O Driscoll and Mr. Doody. The 2ND Years settled into the talk very quickly and soon Ré was recounting to a captive audience. The students really enjoyed the interactive element of the ‘talks’, and enjoyed hearing about character, storyline, plot, timing, setting. Ré O Laighléis con-cluded by saying “I could stand here and talk to you all night, but I don’t know whether you would thank me for it. My last message to you is always try and do something with your life and be proud of yourself “We certainly were on the day!

Soccer Update u14’sThe Under 14s kicked off their North Munster League campaign with an exciting 2-2 draw against Pallaskenry. Two goals from Jonathan Woodland secured a point, but it could so easily have been three. Pallaskenry opened the scoring early in the first half, only to be pegged back when an excellent through ball from James Cleary, cutting in from the left, found Jonathan Woodland in the box, to make it 1-1. Nessan’s unfortunately then went on to spurn two glorious chances (hitting the crossbar with one), before half-time. The second half brought another early goal for Pallaskenry. Nessan’s failed to push out after a corner, leaving a Pallaskenry striker unmarked to slot into the net. 1-2. Fortunately, Nessan’s still had more in the tank, and a wonderful through ball from Stephen Hannon was slotted away by Jonathan Woodland to make it 2-2. Despite a late surge from Nessan’s, including a free-kick off the crossbar from Michael Guerin, that was the way it would stay. A creditable result, but one that could have been so much better. The 14s now face the two remaining group games, away to Croom this month, and at home to Gort in December.Team (4-2-3-1): Antone McNally; Albeau Kaya (Anthony McInerney), Michael Guerin, Ross Bowen, Eric McNamara; Evan Kelly, Daniel McInerney ©; Jason O’Callaghan, Stephen Hannon, James Cleary; Jonathan Woodland Man of the Match: Stephen HannonThe story so far for the 14s….Munster Cup 1st Round – (L) 2-4 vs. Desmond College (Woodland, Guerin) MOM – Ross BowenNorth Munster Friendly – (W) 3-2 vs. Doon CBS (Woodland x2, Cleary) Joint MOM – Jonathan Woodland & Anton Mc NallyNorth Munster League – (D) 2-2 vs. Pallaskenry (Woodland x2) MOM – Stephen Hannon

Trabolgan 2010On Friday15th October Flawless School of Dance went for a dance competition in Trabolgan. 8 girls and 1 boy from St Nessan’s Community College went. Erin Sheehan, Jodie, Josie Hannan, Megan O Brien, Sarah Cassidy, Danielle Meehan, Jess lamb, Ellen Tobin Hogan and our one boy Shane Guerin. We went down on a bus on Friday morning and stayed there for four days and came back on Monday. It was an all Ireland Competi-tion. A range of girls form first year to sixth went. We performed very well there. Our hip-hop team came first and won 1000 euro, two big trophies and 16 small ones. At night time down there we went to the discos and had loads of fun. There were loads of other dance schools there but only two from limer-ick, Flawless and Xpose. We are very good friends with them. Our dance teacher is the one and only Billy Franklin. He does every thing for us. We did loads of different dances such as freestyle, slow dance, hip hop, hip hop pairs, freestyle pairs, grand pree and team. There were loads of judges judging us and loads of big trophies. We train for dancing 6 times a week from Monday to Saturday at 6 – 7.30 pm .We have over 90 dancers involved in the dance school and are increasing numbers all the time. If you’d like to give dancing a try, come down to St Munchin’s Community Hall on Monday at 6pm and join the fun!

The U18’s got their North Munster Campaign off to a flyer with a superb display against Crescent Comprehensive. The first half was one of the finest displays of soccer put on by Nessan’s in recent times. Alex Purcell’s clinical finishing had Nes-san’s 3 – 0 by half time, Cian Hinchy playing a vital role in 2 of the 3 goals. It was a hat trick that shocked Crescent Comprehensive and they came back strong in the second half. After scoring twice in quick succession against a defence that was impregnable in the first half proved that the Crescent were far from beaten. Step forward Dean O Brien. Like so many times in the past, Dean scored a beautiful goal from just outside the area which restored the confidence and kick started Nessan’s second half display. It proved a turning point and relieved the pressure on the de-fence which had been put to the test on several occasions. John Sheehan and Stephen Stokes were immense at the back and a string of fine saves from Ger Meehan allowed Nessan’s to continue attacking and with Shane Wharton and Christopher Mc Inerney added a fifth and sixth on the break, the game was effectively over. Nessan’s took their foot off the gas in extra time which allowed the Crescent Comprehensive to add another 2 goals to their tally to finish an entertaining game 6 – 4. Man of the Match: Alex Purcell.Team (4-5-1) Ger Meehan, Jamie Leahy, John Sheehan, Stephen Stokes, George Molloy, Paul Whelan, Cian Hinchy, Dean O Brien, Christopher McInerney, Shane Wharton, Alex Purcell, Edward O Neill, Ben Johnson, Adrian Mitchell, Josh Whelan.

Soccer Update u18’sThe 1st years are continuing to develop as a soccer team and recently won 2 - 1 in a friendly against the Crescent Comprehensive. The girls and boys also took part in the Limerick FAI Fut-sal Competition and it proved to be the girls who won out the competition and will go on to represent Limerick in the Munster Futsal Competition to be held in the Nenagh Arena in November. We congratulate them wish them the best of luck in Nenagh. Training for the 1st year teams takes place every Monday for the boys and every Tuesday for the girls.

Soccer Update 1st Year

About Andreas... Born in Slovakia, Andreas Varady has been playing the guitar since the age of four. Although only thirteen years old and a 1st Year student at St Nessan’s Community College, he is already an accomplished and imaginative musician, inspired at an early age by Django Reinhart and later George Benson, Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass. Andreas plays by ear and is taught by his guitarist father, Bandi. He has lived in Ireland since 2008, and gained his first experiences from busking, and attending Limerick’s weekly jazz workshop. Andreas first reached a national audience on RTE’s ‘The Guitar’ competition in 2009, and has since been featured on BBC and RTE television and radio. He has also performed at many international festivals, including headlining spots at Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, Sligo Jazz Festival, Derry Jazz Festival and Cork Jazz Festival. This summer, he attended New York’s Skidmore Jazz Institute, under scholarship from the combined Arts Councils of Ireland. Irish drumming star David Lyttle regularly features Andreas in his group, often alongside international guests such as Soweto Kinch, Terell Stafford and Michael Janisch, and performs in Andreas own quartet. Andreas has also appeared with guitar heroes Louis Stewart, Andreas Oberg and Martin Taylor, who recently featured him as a guest on his ‘Spirit of Django’ show at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival. Andreas’ first studio recording, ‘Questions’, co-leading with David Lyttle and featuring Michael Janisch on bass and Bandi on rhythm guitar, was released in September. The CD includes two of Andreas’ originals, in addition to a solo version of ‘The Shadow of Your Smile’. Tokai Guitars recently built Andreas a limited edition ‘Andreas Varady’ signature model, which will be available to the public soon. Andreas is also a D’Addario endorsee, and plays their ‘Chromes’ strings.
