1. Blessing of Icons, Crosses, Medals – March 1st is the Sunday of Orthodoxy.

Everyone is welcome to bring their icons, crosses, medals, rosaries, or other holy items to church and have them blessed after the Liturgy. Place them on the Tetrapod.

2. EASTER DUTY—The Church requires that every Catholic receive the Mysteries of Repentance and Eucharist at least once a year, during the Lenten/Easter season.

3. Annual Parish Meeting - will be held March 1 at 11:45 AM (in the church hall). On Agenda: Financial Report, Plans for the Future.

4. Meetings: Pastoral Council – will have their meeting on Wed., Mar. 4th at 6pm. Our Mother of Perpetual Help – meeting on Mon., Mar. 16 at 1pm.

6. Presanctified Gift Liturgy - During Lent, the Presanctified Gift Liturgy will be offered on Wednesday in Ukrainian and on Friday in English. Please make all efforts to come. Delicious homemade soup and bread will be served after the English Presanctified Gift Liturgy during Lent.

7. Parish Mission and Confessions—scheduled for March 13-15th

. The mission will be given by Rev. Ilie Babota. Mark your calendar and plan to attend.

The Church teaches that every Catholic is to receive the Mysteries of Repentance & Eucharist at least once a year, during the Lenten/Easter season. Confession will be available with Fr. Ilie Babota every day of the Mission and with other visiting priests on Saturday, March 14th from 9:00 -12:00 AM.

9. Lenten Memorial Services "Sorokousty - will begin on Sunday, March 1st

, at 1:00 p.m. Please give Fr. Mikhail the names of those whom you wish to remember in these services.

Where does the word "Sorokousty" come from? The word "Sorokousty" literally means "forty mouths" (sorok = forty; ust = mouth). Originally, this was a prayer service offered by forty mouths or by forty priests. Historically, families would honor their deceased by holding services for them in the cathedrals on the 3rd, 9th and 40th day after their death -- with 40 priests celebrating the

10. Liturgy of St. Basil the Great - will be celebrated every Sunday during the Great Fast. Except for some minor differences, it is the same as the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. The difference lies in the silent prayers, which add about 15 minutes to the Liturgy. The chants sung by the Cantor are more involved to cover what otherwise would be an extended period of silence.

Although our Church traditionally prescribed abstention from meat and dairy products in days gone by for the entire duration of the Great Fast, the following are the minimal Lenten regulations today:

Abstinence from meat and all dairy products on the First Day of the Great Fast and on Good Friday.

Abstinence from meat only on all Fridays of the Great Fast as well as Holy Saturday. It is also traditional to abstain from meat on Wednesdays during the Great Fast.

Reception of the Holy Mysteries of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist during the period from the onset of Great Fast to the Wednesday before Ascension Thursday.

The Fasting and Abstinence regulations are not binding on persons 60 or older, the very poor, sick, nursing or pregnant women, children below the age of 14, and those who engage in physically very hard labor. However, all are urged, if able to do so, to observe the fasting and abstinence regulations.

All the faithful are urged to attend the Lenten services such as Vespers, Presanctified Liturgy & the Commemoration of the Deceased (Sorokousty).

Such good deeds as almsgiving, visitation of the sick, Bible reading and praying for vocations to the priesthood and religious life are most earnestly recommended to all the Faithful.

1. Освячення Образків, Хрестиків та Ікон у Неділю Православ’я – у неділю 1-го березня бажаючих освятити особисті речі релігійного вжитку: ікони, хрестики, медалики, вервички та інше. Просимо принести із собою та покласти на тетраподі перед Богослуження.

2. Реєстрація – Вітаємо гостей до нашої Церкви. Ласкаво просимо усіх бажаючих стати членами парафії, повідомити церковний офіс 273-6752 / office@cerkva.com.

3. Великопосні нормативи – Великий Піст – це час духовної віднови. Св. Церква зобов’язує вірних утриматись від споживання м’яса та молочних страв у

2)Велику П’ятницю та Суботу та в усі п’ятниці Великого Посту.

Піст зобов’язує вірних від 14-го до 59-го року життя. Звільненими від посту є хворі, вагітні, матері, що годують немовлят, ті що залежні від інших та що за станом здоров’я не можуть постити, а також ті, що тяжко працюють. Для усіх обов’язковим є постити у Велику П’ятницю. Великий Піст – це не лише утримання від їжі. Піст це перш за все час покаяння, прощення, та роблення добрих діл. Піст – це час виявлення любові, молитов, та повернення цілого нашого життя до Бога.

4. Парофіяльні Місії – з отцем Ілією Баботою від 13-15-го березня. Зазначіть це у календарі. Нагода приступити до Св. Сповіді буде у суботу 14-го (9:00 -12:00 ранку) та неділю 15-го березня. Церква зобов’язує вірних приступити до св. Тайни Сповіді та Св. Причастя бодай раз у рік у часі Великого Посту та Великодня.

5. Сорокоусти – відправи за померлих членів наших родин відправлятимемо у наступні 5 неділь, починаючи із неділі 1-го березня. Просимо подати імена членів родин, щоб виголосити їх в часі сорокоустних відправ.

6. Збори Церковних Комітетів та Організацій: Пасторальної Ради – у середу.4 березня о 6 год вечора у церкві. Наша Мати Неустанної Помочі – у пон.16 березня о 1 год дня у церкві.

7. Відвідини - деякі наші парохіяни відсутні через недомагання, хворобу, чи перебування у старечому домі. Наші відвідини, телефонний дзвінок, чи сердечний лист матимуть цілющий ефект на їхнє життя. Принесім отож жертву приємну для Господа.

8. Вітаємо з Днем Народження - усіх, хто народився у місяці березні. Нехай Господь поблагословить їх щедро небесними ласками на Многії літа!

9. Вітаємо з Ювілеєм Вашого Подружжя - заносимо наші молитви за подружні пари, що святкують свій Ювілей у березні. Нехай радість, мир та любов переповнять келихи вашого життя на Многії Літа!

10. Служба Ранішеосвяченних Дарів – відправлятиметься в часі Великого Посту у кожну середу (Укр) і у п’ятницю (Анг). Ласкаво просимо усіх до Церкви на молитву.

First Sunday of Lent - Sunday of Orthodoxy; Troparion (5): Let us, the faithful, acclaim and worship the Word* co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit,* and born of the Virgin for our salvation.* For He willed to be lifted up on the cross in the flesh,* to suffer death and to raise the dead,** by His glorious Resurrection.

Troparion, (2): We bow before Your most pure image, O kind Lord,* and beg pardon for our sins, O Christ our God.* Of Your own will You consented to ascend the Cross in the flesh to free Your handiwork from enslavement to the enemy.* In thanksgiving we cry aloud to You:* by coming to save the world, our Saviour, You filled all things with joy.

Epistle (Hebrews 11:24-26; 32-12:2): Brethren, by faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called a son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to share ill treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered abuse suffered for the Christ to be greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to the reward. And what more should I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets— who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, refusing to accept release, in order to obtain a better resurrection. Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned to death, they were sawn in two, they were killed by the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, persecuted, tormented— of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground. Yet all these, though they were commended for their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better so that they would not, without us, be made perfect. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.
