General Informa on From the desk of Father Barnes “Acclaimed as son of David, as the one who brings salva on (Hosanna means ‘Save!’ Or ‘Give Salva on!’), the ‘King of glory’ enters his City ‘riding on an ass.’ Jesus conquers the Daughter of Zion, a figure of his Church, neither by ruse nor by violence, but by the humility that bears witness to the truth (Daily Roman Missal. Midwest Theological Forum. p. 373). The culture in which we currently live is becoming incredibly unhospitable to the Catholic understanding of life and our understanding that we need to be saved by God. Yet even as Catholics, have we come to the realiza on that we need to be saved? Is there that sense of sin or that sensi vity to sin in which we know we are in need of Jesus? Many of the people who lined the streets of Jerusalem were looking for a po-li cal hero who would save them in worldly terms. But Jesus came to save us from our sins, so we would be free to worship God, both in this world and in the next. Lent helps us to think deeply about what we need to be saved from in our own lives, it is a reality check! As we call out ‘hosanna’ and ask God for salva-

on, we realize that Palm Sunday is far more than a sen mental thing. We really need Jesus to save us! God bless, Fr. Barnes

Everyday Stewardship When I was younger I used a reflec on on youth retreats that depicted a disciple of Jesus and his concern about how much Jesus loved him. The disciple would several mes over his life ask Jesus the ques on, "How much do you love me?" Each me Jesus would simply shake his head, wondering why the disciple would ask such a ques on. Then Jesus was arrested and sentenced to death, driving the disciple crazy with his inability to get an answer from Jesus. He was inse-cure and needed reassurance that the Jesus he loved cared for him just as much. Finally, he met Jesus before the mo-ment of his execu on and cried out to him to please ease his soul over the concern of how much he loved the disciple. Jesus then answered, "I love you more than you know. I love you this much," holding his arms out to his side as far as they would go. Then Jesus was seized while in that posture and nailed to a cross, making that gesture a permanent one for the disciple and everyone else to see. I then would play a song en tled, "Thankful Heart," which contained the lyric, "I have a thankful heart, that you have given me, and it can only come from you." It was a moving reflec on every me. A er all that concern about how much the Master loved him, what else could he have but a pro-found sense of gratefulness? He received his answer, and with that answer, a symbol of the ul mate sacrifice of love. Gratefulness is a primary characteris c of an Everyday Stew-ard. On a day like Passion Sunday our gratefulness should overflow. Because of Jesus' death and resurrec on, all things are made new and all things are possible. We are called to be thankful for all the gi s in our lives because the only rea-son any of the gi s ma er is because of his ul mate gi : his life. Liturgical Publica ons, Inc.

Q & A What is the most important holiday on the Catholic calendar? In our day-to-day life, we o en refer to holidays. They are days set aside to commemorate special occasions or cele-brate feasts and anniversaries. Holiday comes from the words "holy day" which we take from our life of faith. More than a significant day, it connects us with God in a unique way, allowing us not only to remember, but also share in the events which are part of God's plan of salva on. Our humanity is joined to the divine and we are made holy. The most important "holy day" is Easter. When Jesus died and rose again, he destroyed the ul mate weapon of sin, which is death, and made it possible for us to have eternal life. There is not another day of more im-portance. Without the Resurrec on, St. Paul tells us, our faith is in vain. Easter is commemorated each me we cele-brate the Mass. It is the ritual-the making present again-that recalls to the present moment the paschal mystery. We proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Some feasts may be celebrated with more fanfare or secular a en on, such as Christmas. But Jesus was born for Easter. Without Easter, there would be no Christmas. Easter is at the very core of what it means to be Chris an. Liturgical Publica ons, Inc.

Why is Easter so Early this Year? By Daniel King and Tyler Langford As you all know, Easter celebrates the Chris an belief of Jesus’ Resurrec on, but how do they determine the date of this special occasion? Easter is set around the me of the March equinox. The dates of other Chris an holidays depend on the date of Easter. These in-clude: Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Ascension Day, and Pentecost. Some churches celebrate Easter on the day of Passover and some on the Sunday a er. It all depends on which calendar one follows; the Julian Calendar or the Gregorian Calendar. All in all, the date of Easter is determined by what year it is, what calendar one follows, and which religion one is a part of.
