Seeking to Know, Grow In, and Show the Ways of Jesus

Letter from the Pastor

I have a friend who likes to think of herself as 99 years young. She recently let a group of us in on her

secret. “I found a quote,” she told us, “that helped me think about growing older. The quote is—Life is ageless.”

What that meant to her was that birthdays are irrelevant. The important thing about life is the present

moment and the way you spend it. “I choose to spend my moments cheerfully and gratefully,” she admitted.

I admire my friend. She reminded me that we are all children of eternity; that the times of our lives are

connected—whether we are 99 years young or six minutes old. Whether we live in ages past or along the

future’s broadening way. Whether we reside in Marthasville or in Istanbul. We all share something remarkably

similar. We all bear in our soul a semblance of the Eternal One.

By that semblance we are made to be something more than ourselves. We are made to be family,

community, companions—one to another. We are made to be partners with the whole human race along the

whole of the journey of life. We are made to be reflections of the Holy.

I have another friend who likes to say, “We are all made of stardust.” By that she means we are all made

of the same elements, with just a bit of Heaven mixed in. I hope this Christmas we can all exercise that bit of

Heaven as we think about the world around us. I hope we can bring a little “star-power” into the far corners of

our globe. I hope we can celebrate the “starlight” in each of us. I hope we can continue to shine—for a long

time to come.

A Poem

(adapted from a poem by Thomas Curtis Clark)

Above a world entrapped by fear,

The Light of Love shown down

Shining there a silver star

A way through field and town.

Through desert lands the Wise Ones made

Their way past mountains wild.

Until they came to Bethlehem

And found a little Child.

Our hearts grow heavy through the years,

But still there shines a star.

It leads our steps through fear and night

And guides us from afar.

May you and your family have a very blessed Christmas—Pastor Donna and Carl

CONFIRMATION FIELD TRIPS During the new year I have arranged for our class to visit some other

churches and worship communities, as a way of experiencing the

wider church.

On Sunday, January 24, 2016 we have a visit scheduled for Christ

Church Cathedral in St. Louis. Christ Church Cathedral is an

Episcopal Cathedral. Worship is at 10 a.m. After worship the Dean

of the Cathedral will talk to us about the cathedral and their mission

to the homeless of St. Louis. As an activity after church, you might

want to consider lunch at a fast food place and then a visit to the

Arch.

On Sunday, February 14, 2016 (Valentine’s Day) we are scheduled

to worship at the Emmaus Chapel—on their campus. Worship begins

at 9.30 a.m. After worship we will be given a tour of the campus,

there will be an activity with the residents, and then a chance to have

lunch together—a brown bag affair. The 14th was chosen because

the Emmaus choirs are not scheduled to sing anywhere—which

means more residents will be at church that day. I think we are

providing the activity—such as making valentines. I will find that

out for sure, however.

In March or early April we will visit Christ the King UCC in

Florissant, MO. Christ the King is a predominately African

American Church. The worship should be fun and exciting. After

worship we may meet with some of the youth from Christ the King.

Please get these dates on your calendars.

I will need drivers of course, so if you can drive, let me know.

Thanks for all your support and help,

Pastor Donna

Christmas Eve Service
