I. Fr. Michael Charles Ajigo, ordained a priest on Saturday, May 30, will celebrate Mass here on Sunday, June 7, at 7:00AM, and at Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 10:00AM. Fr. Michael Charles’ new assignment will begin Tuesday, June 9, as parochial vicar at St. Thomas More church in Paducah, with Fr. Brad Whistle as his pastor. Congratulations, Fr. Michael Charles!

II. Corpus Christi Devotion: Today is the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. In addition to receiving the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass, you will have the opportunity to gather at Saint Stephen Cathedral for prayer before the Blessed Sacrament at 6:00PM, followed by a short procession around the SSC property with the Blessed Sacrament at 7:00PM. We will crown our devotion with Benediction. This will be followed by a ice cream social coordinated by the graciousness of Lupe Ellis!

III. The Fourfold Action of Jesus: In our Gospel today (Mark 14:12-16, 22-26), repeated by Matthew and Luke and in two accounts of Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, we hear of Jesus’ fourfold action of taking the bread, blessing it, breaking it, and giving it to his disciples. Jesus then tells them, “Take it; this is my body.” In a similar way, he took the cup of wine, blessed it, and gave it to the disciples with the words: “This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.” Christians from the very beginning celebrated this event as a perpetual memorial of the death of Christ. Read the Last Supper account of John 13:1-17, written a tad later as the early Church community be-gan to grow and struggle. Note how the essential element of service is connected to Eucharist early on! The account of the Last Supper according to Mark, which Jesus celebrated with his disciples before his suffering and death, belongs to the earliest stages of the written Gospel accounts. Scholars believe Mark’s account was written in 70 A.D. Before that, the sequence of events from Jesus final entry into Jeru-salem to the discovery of the empty tomb comprised the original oral Gospel among the original followers of Jesus. So, “oral” tradition gave way to the “written” tradition, which we have in our sacred Scriptures. Today, in our Church through the Sacrament of Eucharist, we continue the fourfold action of Jesus: taking the bread, blessing the bread, breaking the bread, and giving the bread to His disciples! This holy or consecrated bread, the Body of Christ, is given to us that we might be transformed, that we might become more and more like Jesus in our thoughts, words, and actions.

IV. Encouragement! It’s easy to be negative! It’s becoming normative to put others down! Are you good at “lifting up” people? Are you conscious of encouraging others? On Thursday, June 11, we celebrate the me-morial of Saint Barnabas who is known as the “son of encouragement.” In honor of this Apostle, may each of us be a source of true encouragement, an instrument of evangelization in sharing the Good News!

In Joy and Hope, Fr. Jerry

WORD OF LIFE

A perfect family does not exist. We should not be fearful of imperfections, weakness or even conflict, but rather learn how to deal with them constructively. The family, where we keep lov-ing one another despite our limits and sins, thus becomes a school of forgiveness. Forgiveness is itself a process of com-munication. When contrition is expressed and accepted, it be-comes possible to restore and rebuild the communication which broke down. A child who has learned in the family to listen to others, to speak respectfully and to express his or her view without negating that of others, will be a force for dia-logue and reconciliation in society.

YOUTH GROUP PANCAKE BREAKFAST

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend”. A big Thank You to everyone in our St. Stephen Cathedral family for sup-porting the Youth Group Pancake Breakfast last Sunday. We raised $1,542, which goes toward our fund for taking our youth to attend the NCYC (National Catholic Youth Confer-ence) in Indianapolis in November. All donations are so val-ued and appreciated. A VOCATION VISTA

The media can help communication when they enable people to share their stories, to stay in contact with distant friends, to thank others or to seek their forgiveness, and to open the door to new encounters. By growing daily in our awareness of the vital importance of encountering others, these “new possibilities,” we will employ technology wisely, rather than letting ourselves be dominated by it. (We must learn) how to live in a media environment in a way consonant with the dignity of the human person and service of the common good.

EUCHARISTIC MEDITATION

“We wish to proclaim the Eucharist, that is, Gratitude. This Sacrament is the sign of the gratitude of the whole of creation for the Creator’s visit. This Sacrament is the sign of man’s gratitude because the Creator became a creature; because God became man; be-

cause he took a human body from his Mother Mary Immaculate to raise us again to the Father; to make us Sons of God.

“We wish, furthermore, to proclaim the Eucharist as the sign of the covenant that God concluded irreversibly with us by means of the Body and Blood of his Son. This Body was exposed to the Passion and death. It shared our earthly fate after original sin. This Blood was shed to seal God’s New Covenant with us: the covenant of grace and love, the covenant of holiness and truth. We are participants in this covenant even more than the People of God of the Old Law.

“Everyone, finally, has been called to the Banquet of eternity. And here on earth the Lord God invites each one saying: ‘Take and eat... Take and drink!... in order not to stop on the way!’ How admirable is our God! How wondrous he is when he wish-es us to embrace him, love him and worship him, according to the human dimension of our faith, under the species of Bread and Wine! ‘Ave, verum corpus, natum ex Maria Virgine….Hail, oh true Body, born of the Virgin Mary.’

CHRISTIAN INITIATION

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process by which one inquires and explores Christianity as a way of life in the Catholic Church. Have you ever

asked yourself: How is the Catholic Christian faith different from other

Christian religions? Will being a Catholic help me develop and strengthen my

relationship with God? Will the teachings of Jesus enhance the fullness of life for me

that is promised in the Scriptures? Will being a member of the Catholic Church make a differ-

ence in my life? The RCIA process helps answer these questions. Life is a jour-ney where a person is constantly learning, growing, and chang-ing. This process is a step in the journey and lays the ground work, through information and experiences, in helping one de-cide to be a member of the Catholic faith. It provides the op-portunity to ask questions, pray, and experience what is meant by being a Catholic and entering into a relationship with God and the Catholic community. RCIA typically meets on Wednesday evenings in the Media Center. However, there will be a break from weekly sessions meeting until July 15. For more information, contact Donna Murphy, 270-852-8424, or [email protected].
