Selecting GlassThe birds in these patterns represent actual North American species. The accompanying color samples offer a simple guide to what colors ofglass might be used for the various pieces. If you want your project tohave more complicated colors and plumages, consult a birding guide orcolor photographs to help you choose streaky or multicolored glass thatmatches what you see. Have fun!

Using the PatternsThe birds in this book are all relatively small and so the patterns willwork great used actual size. You can simply solder loops for hanging tothe circle’s edge. (You can also, of course, enlarge the patterns on acopier to make the projects in a larger size.)

You can easily add surrounding pieces to the patterns to createsquare or rectangular panels that incorporate the circular bird patternsbut have the dimensions you want.

Creating EyesMany of these patterns include eyes. To create the eyes, cut a small gapin the glass along the appropriate edge and fill the gap with solder. Oryou can cut and foil a tiny piece of glass to fill in the gap. Another wayto create eyes is to paint them directly on the glass (using paints madeespecially for glass). If you do this, make sure the glass is clean and drybefore you paint.
