stages of construction - front cover

Stages of Production – Front Cover I imported original image from file and set it onto an A4 sized document as this is the size of the magazine itself. Here I have edited the front cover photo using lens correction, a couple of hue and saturation filters, a brightness/contrast filter, a curves filter and a solid colour with a small level of opacity for a tint of colour. This editing creates the vintage/indie look that I’m looking for; quite dark and mysterious, yet urban and unique.

Stages of Production – Front Cover

I imported original image from file and set it onto an A4 sized document as this is the

size of the magazine itself.

Here I have edited the front cover photo using lens correction, acouple of hue and saturation filters, a brightness/contrast filter,

a curves filter and a solid colour with a small level of opacity

for a tint of colour. This editing creates the vintage/indie look

that I’m looking for; quite dark and mysterious, yet urban and

unique.

Here I created my masthead to be used mainly on the front cover, and also throughout

the rest of the magazine. I used two layers; one with red text and a black stroke on the

bottom, and one with red text and a white stroke (with an inner bevel) on top. I used

red, black and white as the main colour scheme for the magazine as red is a primarycolour (so it’s naturally eye-catching) and black and white are very contrasting

colours.

Above, I created a gradient coming from the bottom-right corner of the cover, as to

draw the focus of a potential buyer to the masthead and main image of the band. The

area where the gradient has been placed is going to be populated with features such as

the barcode and footer.

Above, I created three parallelograms by using the rectangle tool, filling with the

colours used in my set colour scheme, and then I slanted the rectangles using Ctrl + T

to free transform, in order to create a quite obscure looking object on which the text

will be placed, to label the new band. I also put a drop shadow on the shapes (using

the  fx tool) to make them appear to hover off of the page slightly. Finally I added the

all important barcode, date, issue number and price.

Here I used the rectangle tool with a light but bold blue as the colour to fill them,

along with a thin white stroke to separate them from the image of the band. The blue

appears abstract to the reader as it doesn’t follow the gloomy feel of the image, nor

the uniform feel of the colour scheme. The effect used here is to divert the reader into

seeing the header/footer to see the features that could potentially be quite interesting

to readers interested in other bands. I also think that the use of ‘PLUS!’ gives the

impression of the magazine pushing the boat out to provide free/extra features to the

buyer. I used the word ‘exclusive’ in order to give the buyer a special feature that

separates it from other magazines.

I used a large red rectangle, a smaller white rectangle and a black one as a background

for the images of extra bands to go on top of them. I also added text onto the black

parallelograms above and below ‘THE SUMS’ for visual effect and to give the reader

a small insight to why they are the cover band. I used a yellow rectangle as a

background for the ‘FREE POSTERS!’ so to make it appear striking against the rest

of the colours. I used a font called ‘Sam’s Town’ from dafont.com for the ‘PLUS!’and the ‘FREE POSTERS!’.

Here I added two images that we’re taken at the Cavern, Liverpool, as the posters of

bands. The bands were named and labelled with a red rectangle and white text to fit

the colour scheme. I accommodated the black rectangle with red text to appear

bold/contrasting so that the reader sees that there are more posters to be seen, if they

look inside.
