Dear Parents/caregivers Welcome to Week 7! Education Outside the Classroom—Year 0 to 2 Camp Day What an exciting day the year 0-2 children had at our Camp Day. The children’s highlights were: setting up their sleeping bags with pillows and soft toys, spending time in the tents, making a ‘campfire’, singing campfire songs and making s’mores. Thank you to our fantastic parent helpers who provided tents and helped with the setup, barbequed the sausages for our lunch treat and helped the children with the s’more assembly and cooking. Thank you Mrs Stedman, Miss Hunter, Mrs Adam and Mrs McLennan for your hard work with the organisation and running of a successful day, Megan McVerry, (Mahuri Team Leader). I played in the huge tent with Noa and Natalie.B. Next I got some wood for the campfire. We ate a sausage and a s’more. Next I found a ladybug with my magnifying glass. Charlotte Avery Room 12

WaterWise As you will know from the last newsletter we are desperately seeking help to run the Waterwise programme. Thank you to those who have already volunteered, however, we need more instructors! Our aim is to have a pool of instructors that we can rotate to ensure that the school can sustain the programme. This week we will be sending home a letter which explains the specifics of the role. Beside learning to sail for free this is a great opportunity to support the students in a worthwhile initiative. If you are considering becoming a Waterwise instructor please contact Fiona Bower on 021 057 8007 or email [email protected]. We will have two sessions left this term on 22 March and 5 April (noon to 3pm) to come and see Waterwise in action! International Competition for Schools (ICAS) To provide students with an opportunity to extend their learning, each year we offer the International Competitions for Schools (ICAS). The ICAS competitions, organised by Educational Assessment Australia of the University of New South Wales, are an optional test for students to take part in. The aims of the competitions are to promote higher order thinking and problem solving skills while motivating and challenging students. The tests also allow students to practice exam techniques. This year we are offering the following options; Science (y3-6) English (y3-6) Mathematics (y3-6) Writing (y4-6) If you would like to enter your child there will be a letter coming home this week and also a copy on the website. Please return the slip to the red letter box by 6 April. Please note that we are unable to accept late entries due to administration deadlines. Payment may be made by internet or EFTPOS at the office. More information about the competition and practice papers can be found at - https://www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/icas/subjects/ Staffing News Sarah Simpson, our long standing and super efficient Special Needs Co-ordinator, is leaving us at the end of March. During the past six years Sarah has taught many children through the Reading Recovery Programme and provided the school with extensive special needs support. We wish Sarah all the best on her new adventure. Jill Etchells will take over the role of Special Needs Coordinator. Jill has many years experience as a special needs coordinator and Reading Recovery teacher. Most recently she has worked as a Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour and SPELD tutor. Jill has worked in many schools on the peninsula and we are looking forward to welcoming her to the team. Paid Union Meetings Reminder A reminder that NZEI are holding a number of union meetings to form a claim regarding the Primary Teachers Collective Agreement. The union meetings will be held on 14 and 23 March, during which time the school will remain open for instruction. Easter Holiday Weekend Easter will soon be upon us and I am sure we are all ready for a long weekend. The school will be closed for the Easter holiday weekend from Friday 30 March and will reopen on Wednesday 4 April. Please note that on Tuesday 3 April the school will be closed.

Connecting with our Community - Blue Day for Plunket On Wednesday 7 March we all wore a symbol of blue in support of PLUNKET. The children were in high spirits and the school was a sea of blue hair, lips and clothes. Thank you to the children who participated and donated a gold coin to this wonderful organisation that helps so many. We are pleased to have raised $247 for Plunket. Bake Sale for Cyclone Gita A huge thank you to the SBS community for supporting the bake sale to raise funds for the victims of Cyclone Gita. The event was organised by a very motivated group of students who had been moved by what they had seen and heard in the media and problem solved to find out how they could help. What authentic learning! There was overwhelming support for the bake sale which resulted in $448.60 for the victims of Cyclone Gita. Assembly – Thursday 16 March On Friday we will be hosting an event for the teachers and leaders of the peninsula schools in our hall. So this week assembly will be on Thursday at 2.15. We look forward to seeing you all there. Nga mihi nui Lucy Naylor, Principal/Tumuaki

Fundraising for 2018—we need your input! Dear Stanley Bay School Families Thank you to everyone for your hard work in supporting Stanley Bay School to achieve the fundraising target for 2017. We had a fantastic year where we raised $88,344 well exceeding our $40,000 target and achieving the second target of funds for the school playground upgrade! This year our target is $50,000 and we would like your advice / input into how we go about raising this money and building a strong school community as part of the journey. To make this easy on everyone we have put together a short survey where you can have input into possible fundraising and community events for this year. These include existing events that have been part of our calendar for what seems like forever and new proposals. This is intended as the starting point so you can help us shape a plan by letting us know how we may improve, what new events you are interested in or how you can help out. This last point is really important to us, as all the events rely on community participation to be successful for our school & children. As usual your responses are confidential and we will only publish the overall results. Once we have the survey results we will get back to you with what we think is an achievable and engaging events calendar for the year.

Please complete the survey by 25 March as your feedback is key to our success together - click here Thank you for your time we do appreciate it! SBS Fundraising Team
