We have some exciting news that we want to share! Starting with the Ghostly Gecko 5K and all series events going forward, Running Zone Foundation will provide FREE child care during the race. We have partnered with Planet Kid just south of Running Zone to provide safe fun child services. Planet Kid will strive to make sure parents feel comfortable and have complete trust in leaving their children during the race.

We are offering the “Gecko Kid’s Zone” starting 30 minutes before each race and up to an hour after the start of the race for any child 8 or under. Anyone want-

ing to utilize this service will be able to sign up in advance or

at the race site on race day. Also, any child under 18 months would need to be signed up two days prior to race day.

Running Zone Founda-tion and Planet Kid are very

excited to partner together to offer this additional service

to make it easier for individuals and families to participate in our foundation events. We will be posting further details about the Gecko Kid’s Zone on www.runningzone.com/series in the upcoming weeks.

Think you’re too old to start run-ning? Think again. Meet Anne Dockery, a delight-fullyBritish63-year-oldretiredhighschool teacher who didn’t begin to run until after she turned 55. well as the top age-graded female award in the Space Coast Runners’ Runner of the Year Series. Below we share, in her own words, a glimpse of her running life. We hope that you will be encouraged and inspired!

Began Running Before departing the UK for Poughkeepsie, NY in 2004, I was misdiagnosed with a lung disease. To strengthen my lungs, my newly-acquired husband, Mike, suggested I take up running and unilaterally en-tered me in a hill-ridden cross-coun-try race. And so on Nov. 4, 2004, I laboredthroughmyfirst5k,finishingin28:40-and,oddlyenough,findingthe ordeal enjoyable.

unuSuaL nicKnaMe My Poughkeepsie TNT coach who trained runners at a local prison dubbed me ‘the inmate’ because I showed up in baggy trousers, a faded sweatshirt and Mike’s knitted black wool cap, reminiscent of prison attire. A far cry from my fashionable RZ outfit!

Running DeVeLoPMenT In 2005, after some solo running, I was invited to join the Poughkeepsie TNT runners who introduced me to the delights of running the Hudson Valley hills and the fun of training while chatting with friends.MyfirstraceinMelbournewasthe2006RunfortheLight10katWin-doverFarms(49:16),afterwhichIjoined SCR. Around that time a few experienced runners told me that I was fairly fast for my age and had the potential to go faster. When my husband, Mike, challenged metoruna7:30mile,Iputmarkersalong A1A and eventually managed a 7:08.Sometimesyoujustneedapushin the right direction to encourage you to explore your capabilities. Getting to know Sue Strout (StroutisfiveyearsDockery’sju-nior) was great for my running. For twoyearswewerefiercebutfriendlycompetitors. I’d beat her by two sec-onds and she would beat me by four.

She was getting the better of me when she was sidelined by an injury.

iDeaL TRaining WeeK Running three times each week with one speed work session either locally or at Hoover; a tempo run (the most arduous workout), and a long run ranging from six to 10 miles Cross training includes road cy-cling or spinning class, weight train-ing and Pilates classes - great for the core and that end-of-race kick - and tennis once or twice a week.

DeVeLoPing MenTaL TougHneSS Training the mind is vitally im-portant in getting better results. As the physical effort and intensity increase, I try to learn to accommodate dis-comfort - perhaps even welcome it. When training or racing I focus on keeping pernicious negative thoughts-what the poet William Blake called “the mind-forged manacles”-at bay. There are limitations enough without entertaining self-imposed bogeymen. So when the hounds of negativity begin to bark inside my head, it’s back to the kennel for them.

RecenT inJuRY I was training for the half-marathon (2011 USATF Masters Half-Marathon Championship) and whether I trained too hard, I don’t know. The week before the race I ran over the bridge to loosen up and felt a gripping tightness in the back of my leg. I ended up walking. Iranthehalf-marathon(1:42:21,third60-64)andthenlaidoff.Thephysiotherapist diagnosed a pulled hamstring. I’m now running again but speedworkisstilldifficult.

Being PaRT of THeRunning Zone Race TeaM I enjoy being part of the RZ team

- especially when some one hollers out ‘come on, Anne’. That type of generous encouragement makes me grit my teeth and push harder. To be associated with such an im-pressive group of athletes and friends is a pleasure and a privilege.

MoST MeMoRaBLe RaceS I have always enjoyed the Down-town Melbourne 5k in which men and women run separate races and so have the opportunity to support each other. The high-energy atmosphere helped me last year to run a 5k PR of21:14.(Shewonthe60-64divisionbyalmostsixminutesandwas7thfemaleoveralloutof263womeninthe race.) And of course the zoo races (The Running Zone Foundation Race Series annual 3K event at the Brevard Zoo. ) and the Space Coast half-mara-thon are always great fun. My fourth race (ever) was a half-marathon in Poughkeepsie which I entered at the very last minute. I started off slowly, chatting and enjoy-ing the fall foliage. I gradually picked upmypaceandfinishedin2:04.I

was thrilled to get second place in the 50-59 age group.

on TaKing TWo 2010oVeRaLL feMaLe WinS Lucky! I just happened to run well on those days when speedsters like Jessica(Crate) weren’t compet-ing. These local events were par-ticularly gratifying, especially the Coconut 5k which raised money for our library, Melbourne Beach’s little treasure trove for bibliophiles.

cuRRenT goaLS Break 20 minutes in the 5K this season or, more realistically, beat my 21:14PB. While I was injured, Mike began teaching me how to swim freestyle. I’d like to attempt a sprint triathlon sometime next year.

will get you out the door when you least feel like training. People say ‘ oh I couldn’t do whatyoudo’,yetwhenIfirststarted,I’d run a half mile and be exhausted. Ittakestimetobuildupyourfitness, but it is well worth the effort and dedication. Improvement may come infitsandstartsbutaslongasyoupersevere it will come. I was told that after you start running, you have just ten years in which to improve. A valid axiom or one more mental shackle? Time will tell. Set an an achievable goal and enjoy the challenge. Duringyourfirstracesit’sgreatto have an experienced runner by your side, offering guidance and encouragement. I was lucky enough to have the sage advice of Tom Ward (another Running Zone race team member from Melbourne Beach) who would calm me down at the start and give me tips such as ‘slow down, you’re going out too fast’. So lace ‘em up, come join us, and together we might just show the young whippersnappers a thing or two!

Who doesn’t like pizza? They’ll be plenty of the tasty-topped crusty goodness at the post-race tailgate party following the I Run for Pizza Football Kickoff 5K on Saturday, August 13 at The Avenue in Viera. “The pizza never stops coming,” said race director, Denise Piercy. “It’s cool because the race is staged from the beautiful courtyard behind the Pizza Gallery and Grill. Chris (Conneen, Pizza Gallery owner) is right there and he keeps bringing out all different kinds. He makes so many pizzas that day.” But there’s more to this race than the delectable pies! The 3.1-mile out-and-back course is one of the county’s quickest. Staged on wide, open roads with plenty of trafficcontrol, theflat, fastroutehashelped many athletes score an early season personal best. Check out the course map at www.runningzone.com/calendar/docs/Course%20Map%202010.pdf In addition to the shouts of family and friends, participants will also be sent off and welcomed by the rousing cheers of the Suntree/Viera youth foot-ball and cheerleading league. The chase for this year’s top spot is wide open as two-time winner and course record holder, David Kilgore, has left Brevard to begin his collegiate running career with the University of Colorado in Boulder. There’s more at stake this year, too. The 5K is race number two in the seven-race Running Zone Foundation Race Series. The points earned at the finishlinewillhelpdeterminewhowill

earn a piece of the $10,000 prize purse – the largest ever in a Brevard road-racing series – at the end of the season. All participants will receive an awesome moisture-wicking race shirt; the festive post-race tailgate party and a chance to win great door prizes includ-ing two NFL football tickets to any Florida team game plus one hotel night stay for two! Everyoneisinvitedtoflythecolorsof their favorite football team and there will be a special award for the most supported team! And all participants, volunteers and sponsors can feel good knowing thatproceedsfromthisracewillbenefitWEGO Ministries, the Suntree/Viera youth football and cheerleading league and the Johnson family of Palm Bay. “Someone asked us to put on a 5K benefitfortheJohnsons,”saidPiercy.“We asked the Foundation if we could take a portion of the proceeds for them at this race. Hannah’s Helpers David and Susannah Johnson, together with their four children, were involved in a horrific traffic accident while on vacation in north Georgia. Susannah, 32 and 20 weeks pregnant, broke close to a dozen ribs and eight-year-old Kathryn, will be wheelchair-bound for the next few months with two broken legs and a crushed pelvis. While David and oldest daugh-ter, Brook, were relatively unscathed, six-year-old Hannah was killed and 3-year-old Owen became paralyzed from the neck down as his spine was severed by the impact of the pickup truck slamming into the family’s van. Learn more about this tragedy and the way that our community is helping this family at Hannah’s Help-ers on Facebook.

David Kilgore set the current course record of 15:33 in 2010.

neWTonNeutral ShoesThe Newton Gravity for men and women is Newton Running’s top-of-the-line neutral per-formance trainer. It is a light weight, neutral shoe designed to handle the rigors of daily training and encourages you to land on your mid to forefoot. Get a fast, flexible ride with greater energy return and less impact.

The Newton Sir Isaac – and Lady Isaac for women - is a good starting point for runners seeking a more “natural” foot landing position. The shoe design encourages mid-foot and forefoot striking, while the actuator lugs ab-sorb impact and return energy. Best suited for runners who looking for a daily training shoe with a focus on durability and protection.

Lightweight Neutral ShoeThe Newton Distance for men and women is all about moving forward on your foot and moving fast. A small heel to forefoot height

differential encourages a mid-foot strike and Action/Reaction technology in the forefoot provides energy return at toe-off. The Newton Distance is best suited for tempo runs intervals or racing. This light weight, high mileage trainer is perfect for everyday training, or racing any distance from a 5K to an ultra-marathon.

Stability ShoesThe Newton Sir Isaac S – and Lady Isaac S for women - provides support for over-pronation while encouraging a mid-foot/fore-foot strik-ing pattern. Thanks to actuator lugs in the forefoot, the Sir Isaac S provides excellent shock absorption and energy return. This shoe is great choice for runners who have been in traditional support shoes, but now want to try moving up on the foot to be more “natural”.

The Newton Motion for men and women of-fers support for over-pronation, in a light-weight package designed for daily training. The structure of the shoe encourages you to land forward on your foot and actuator fore-foot lugs deliver a responsive toe-off.

All Terrain ShoeThe Newton Terra Momentus for men and women is an off-road trainer designed for all types of terrain, from groomed bridle paths and roads to technical mountain trails. The outsole features a protected stretch mem-brane and increased traction, while the upper

is designed with a closed mesh to keep out debris and medial and lateral webbing to provide increased upper stability.

ViBRaM fiVe fingeRSThe Vibram Bikila for men and women promotes barefoot running by encouraging a more natural, healthier, and more efficient forefoot strike. This is the first model from Vibram intended specifically for a more natural running experience. The Bikila is built on a completely different platform than other FiveFinger models, featuring a Dri-Lex covered 3mm polyurethane insole (thickest under the ball) and a 4mm anatomical pod outsole design that offers more plating protection, and distributes forefoot impact without compro-mising important ground feedback essential to a proper forefoot strike running form.

The Virbram KSO for men and women is best for Light Trekking, Fitness Training, Climbing/Bouldering, Running, Water Sports, Traveling, After Sport, Yoga and Pilates.

The Vibram KomodoSport for men and women has combined the KSO and Bikila to provide the perfect shoe for the core barefoot demographic. It’s great for running, walking and sports in general while being comfortable, supportive and stylish, to become part of your everyday wardrobe.

HoneY STingeRHoney Stinger Organic Waffles make a great tasting snack. Inspired by Lance Armstrong who suggested we produce our own version of similar waffles that are sold throughout Europe and eaten by profes-sional cyclists. Honey Stinger Organic Waffles are the only product of their kind that’s certified organic and available in a single-serving wrapper.

Honey Stinger Energy Gel packets include pure honey from the USA, water, sodium, potassium, B com-plex vitamins and all-natural flavors. Strawberry and Gin-sting flavors contain kola nut extract which is a natural source of caffeine.

Honey Stinger is more versatile than other energy gels. Consume it straight from the packet for a long-lasting boost of energy or spread it on toast or stir it into tea. All flavors also mix well with water to make a natural energy drink.

Honey Stinger Organic Energy Chews are formulated specifically for health-conscious individuals and athletes seeking a great tasting energy snack. Honey Stinger Organic Energy Chews are unique as they are the first to include naturally occurring fiber and protein derived from 100% organic tapioca syrup and honey.

nunnNuun is a portable sports drink mix that con-tains the necessary electrolytes to keep you properly hydrated without all the sugars like most sports drinks.

Nuun can help alleviate cramps by keeping you hydrated better than water alone. Each sip gives you a consistent mix of water and elec-trolytes to ensure you stay properly hydrated and cramp-free.

Nuun is sugar free, so it’s nearly calorie free, but there are a couple calories from the stuff that makes it fizz and dissolve. When you add them up it comes out to less than 8 calories per 16oz drink. Drop a Nuun in a bottle of water and you’re good to go!
