H O W T O C A T C H A F R O Gand Other Stories of Family, Love, Dysfunction, Survival, and DIYby heather ross
Much of Heather Ross’s creative work as a fabric designer, illustrator, and crafter has been inspired by having been born into, but rarely actively supervised by, an eccentric family of artists and idealists in a rural corner of Vermont during the 1970s. In How to Catch a Frog, Ross looks back at her childhood and recounts how she found her own place in the adult world. Each essay includes her signature illustrations, and with some she shares a corresponding DIY project or lesson. A lively, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking memoir and a testament to the richness and strength of the creative spirit. 240 pages, 5 5/8 x 8 1/2", hardcover with jacketisbn: 978-1-61769-098-3 us $24.95 can $27.95MAY

HOW TO Make a Teepee with Plastic Flowers
The trouble with making a beanpole teepee is that summer usually ends before all the beans reach the top, or that the beans stop reaching for the top before summer ends. You can trick a sunflower by putting a paper bag over its head for a few hours out of the day; it will think that it’s in the shadow of another sunflower, and it will try to become bigger and taller. But you must always take the bag off by noon, because if it doesn’t get any sun at all, it will simply give up, and it will lie down, with its flower still facing the sky, which is far too sad a sight for summertime. Beans, however, once comfortably stretched out on a net of sticks and string, tilted toward the sun, will get sleepy and thick but will have no reason to continue to reach. The other trouble with a beanpole teepee is that nothing grows beneath it. You will wait all summer long, which for a child is both a lifetime and an instant, and then you will crawl inside and find it to be unexpectedly dark and damp. You will feel the cold wet on your knees through your jeans before you are even all the way inside because you have watered it so many times, hoping to make it grow thick and tall, that the earth inside will be almost black with mud because the sun can’t get inside. You will drag in a towel or a blanket or something else, but that too will eventually feel wet, and then you will not want to go back into your beanpole teepee, and you will forget that you left some of your favorite things inside it when you went there on the longest day of the year, before its days became numbered. This is why you should make a teepee out of plastic flowers. I know you must think I am very tacky, or very lazy, but here is what I can promise you: that when you are finished and you crawl through the opening and into your small house, you will feel whole, and satisfied, and your mind will be settled. To make anything by hand, whether it is to feed or to warm
or to shelter yourself, to succeed in meeting some small—or not small—need that exists within us, this is what we and every other thing with a heart that walks this earth are meant to do with our hands and with our
days. And when you are inside a structure that you have built yourself, whether your walls are made of plastic or grass or brick or beans, you will
be at home. I know this because, when I was a child, I lived on land inhabited by
people who lived in houses that they had built for themselves, by hand. The only thing that these three houses had in common, apart
from their rural route delivery address, was that they were built without a working knowledge of architecture or construction.
All three houses, plus a century-old farmhouse that we all called The Red House, were within distant sight of each other, along the last half mile of a narrow dirt road that
climbed into the mountains, growing narrower and grassier and eventually becoming a simple trail that could be easily lost before it disappeared completely into
the woods.STC CRAFT | MELAN IE FAL ICK BOOKS 9

Introduction
Now that people know I paint—I’ve included my artwork in my books, made public my darling pleasure—they not only want to attend writing workshops, they ask me when I will teach painting. I jokingly say, Never. But if they pay close attention, I’m teaching painting all the time when I talk about writing. Writing is a visual art. You want the reader to see what you are saying. You can’t say, I love it, and expect the reader to know what you love. Instead you have to tell her how the mountain looked at dusk, the heavy creases seen from a distance, a canyon leading to a blue lake, how you knew there was water by the line of green cottonwoods, how the clouds gathered behind the twin peaks, a summer storm, and the sunset glazed the flanks of the mountain with the color of watermelon juice. Now draw it. But I don’t know how, you say. People used to tell me that all the time about writing, too. First, you need to understand that writing and drawing are natural human endeavors. Trees, apples, sauerkraut jars, cars, tables, lions, dolphins—none of these write or draw. Only human beings do. Even twenty-five thousand years ago, prehistoric mortals left images on the walls of caves deep in the earth. I had the privilege of visiting Peche-Merle in Lot, France, walking down many flights of stone stairs into dank, dark grottoes. We turned a corner and behold, two spotted horses etched on the craggy wall. Most moving was the full image of a five-fingered human hand pressed above one horse’s back—the artist’s signature—his greeting ringing out through the long lineage of centuries. Hello. I was here. This drawing is a testament. Isn’t that what we all want from writing and painting? We have a need to express ourselves in this transient world. To stop time for a moment. To show how we see and feel before we are gone.
