School Scoop
From the Editor’s Corner…. The clock is ticking, there are things to do, and as always, one more gift to purchase or recipe to prepare. When do we really have a moment to stop and smell the roses? Life, for most, seems to become busier every day; we always seem to be on the fast and furious mode. As we prepare to bid farewell to 2016, let us not forget to take time to give thanks for all that we have in our daily lives and for those who enrich us in a variety of ways. Family, friends and acquaintances are probably the three groups of constants that we sometimes even take for granted. Enjoy special moments and the trivial memories that enable us to endure each day. Take time to help someone with an errand or even just to listen. You might be surprised by the kind of impact it has especially upon those who mean the most to us. Enjoy the coming days and this special holiday edition of the Scoop. -Sandy Fusco

Yellin Blue and Gold Choir
Under the guidance of Mr. William Conn, Choral and Music Director in the Stratford School District, the Samuel S. Yellin School choir earned second place in the More FM Holiday Choir Competition. “It’s a Marshmallow Christmas” was the tune that the More FM fans seemed to love and voted on, leading this talented group of young singers to second place. In addition to this, Mr. Conn will receive a check for $2,000.00 adding it to the much-needed music budget. On behalf of the Scoop staff, we congratulate Mr. Conn and his young singers on a job well done!
An Evening of Holiday Tunes December 8, 2016 was the date and the gymnatorium was the place for the annual Yellin School holiday concert. Yellin’s Beginner and Advanced Bands entertained this well-attended musical event, and the now famous Yellin School’s Elementary choir serenaded parents and other guests with a variety of holiday tunes. “It’s a Marshmallow World” and “It’s Snowing” were two choir favorites while the Advanced Band nicely played its renditions of “Concerto for Sleigh Bells and Band” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of Year.” Our Beginner Band showed off a jaunty performance of “Jolly Old St. Nick” as well as a favorite of many, “Jingle Bells.” Here’s to another uplifting performance by our young musicians enabling all who attended to join in the holiday spirit. Congratulations to Mr. William Conn and his talented musicians!

Hoops for Hearts
Seventh & Eighth Graders Shoot Hoops for Hearts
As in the past, Yellin School once again participated in the American Heart Association’s Hoops for Heart fundraiser. Students in the upper grades were afforded the option to participate in the “four on four” basketball tournament. There were ten teams and fifty students; raising a total of $210.00 to donate. Many thanks to all who contributed and participated in this worthy cause.
Patriotic fun in Mrs. Johnston’s Class
Mrs. Johnston’s First Grade Class
collected items from Parkview School
students to be put into holiday care
packages for our soldiers currently
serving in foreign lands. All items were
donated to The Military Support Group
of New Jersey and were sent in time
for our soldiers to receive them for the holidays. The first
grade classroom collected leftover Halloween candy for
Operation Gratitude, too! Over 100 pounds of candy was
donated and sent to our troops!
The 1st graders also honored veterans with a presentation
to celebrate the bravery, courage, and strength of our
American heroes. The children learned the importance of
Veteran’s Day, symbols of our country, and what a veteran
is. Thank you to those special veterans who were able to
visit!
-Special thanks to Mrs. Kara Johnston
Leo Club and NJHS… 2017 Activities
Ms. Donna Scheurenbrand and Mrs.Carol Forrest are joining forces to sponsor Pennies for Patients . Beginning in January, members of both organizations will be actively collecting spare change during homeroom benefitting children with cancer. This special Yellin School event will continue through February. As in the past, this has proven to be one of the most popular fundraising endeavors in our district and one that will make many children and their families very happy. Needless to say, this is an ex-ceptional way to commence the new year.
“Hats off” to these two vital organizations!

This year, Mrs. McTague, Mrs. Taylor, and Mrs. Kozieja will direct yet another in a long series of Yellin’s fabulous musi-cal productions. They, along with the cast and crew, will produce Mulan. When our stage transforms to Ancient China, the title role of Mulan will be played by Julia Filipkowski. Mushu, her faithful dragon guardian will be played by Sara Sanislo-Thomas, and Captain Shang will be portrayed by School Scoop’s very own Kathleen Ortiz-Torcellia. With the help of Yao, Quean-Po, and Ling, who used to be Renee Cordon, Ashley Connearny, and Samia Jan-natul, they will join forces against the evil Shan-Yu, formerly know as Will Materazzo under the watchful eye of Stephanie Kelly, now known as Chi-Fu. Be sure to keep your eye out for more updates on this fabulous play.

Welcome Mrs. Marinucci
Yellin’s newest Basic Skills teacher is
a Stratford resident and Yellin School
graduate, Mrs. Shannon Marinucci s
a graduate of Rutgers University.
While at Rutgers, she earned a
degree in teaching and psychology.
A mother of three children ages
eight, eleven and six, Mrs. Marinucci
enjoys spending most of her time
with her family. Crafting is one of her
favorite hobbies, and of course,
reading too!
When asked about her experience so
far in the Stratford School District,
Mrs. Marinucci commented that she
“loves” being back in her “old” school
and is excited about working with so
many fabulous children.
We, at Yellin, are especially proud to
have Mrs. Marinucci among our staff
as she is one of Mrs.Fusco’s former
eighth grade students.
Welcome aboard!

Welcome Ms. Shissler!
We are pleased to introduce Ms. Sara Jane Shissler, Yellin’s newest Teacher of Special Education. A native of Haddon Heights and grad-uate of Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pa., Ms. Shissler completed her student teaching experience at the Hershey Elementary School. Her love of soccer led her to play while in college. In fact, Ms.Shissler was assis-tant coach for the Lady Squires this year. In her spare time, Ms. Shissler enjoys cooking and loves to make pizza! A lover of the outdoors, Ms. Shissler is also an avid hiker.
Welcome aboard, Ms. Shissler !

In a beautifully decorated gymnatorium, Yellin’s middle school students celebrat-ed the holiday season in style. As always, students were asked to dress in their finest outfits, setting the stage for a joyful evening for all! Seventh and eighth graders danced the night away and took some time to visit with Santa to make this a fun-filled memory. A huge thank you is extended to the dedicated Student Council members and their advisors, Daria Phillips and Jeff Tompkinson.

Lady Squires Finished Strong The Lady Squires had an great season this fall with a new assistant
coach! Miss Shissler was welcomed into the “Squires’ family” this season and did a phenomenal job coaching. With new drills, and running sprints with the team, she was truly an asset and loved by all players. Mr. Moore did a fantas-tic job coaching the lady squires once again this year through their ups and downs. The team worked well together always supporting each other through everything.
This season’s team captains were Grace Michelli, Kathleen Ortiz, and
Maddie Sheehan. The manager was Ayanna Hobbs who did an excellent job. At the end of the season, the Lady Squires scrimmaged the Squires nailing a win! What a fabulous feat for these young women!
To conclude this memorable season, the eighth grade team members
received gift bags and were thanked for their hard work and given a special sendoff as they prepare to enter the next level of their educational careers.

Boys’ Basketball is in Full Swing
As always, Coach Joseph Cogan, Yellin’s well-
known and victorious leader, is off to a strong
start with a new Yellin School boys’ basketball
team. Although tryouts were challenging, a
dynamic team was selected, and the young
players are motivated and consistently prepar-
ing for another memorable season. Thus far,
the Squires have defeated the following teams:
John Paul, Voorhees, Brooklawn, Merchantville,
and Magnolia, adding up to a 5-0 record. The
next key game is on December 20 when Yellin’s
boys meet the Somerdale Cavaliers.
In terms of team philosophy, anyone who knows
Coach Cogan realizes that he trains hard so that
his boys capture their league basketball cham-
pionship. If achieved in 2017, this will be the
third consecutive championship win!
These aggressive young boys love the game but
are also thrilled when their fans show up to
support them. We wish Coach Cogan and his
Yellin players the best of luck as they endeavor
to make this a bigger and better season than in
previous years.

We live in a world surrounded by technology , and we know that in whatever field our students choose, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on un-derstanding how technology works. However, only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. In fact, fewer than half of all schools teach computer sci-ence.
That is why our entire school joined in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 5-11). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code.
Our Hour of Code made a statement that Samuel S. Yellin School is ready to teach these foundational 21st century skills. Considering this idea of bringing pro-gramming activities to your students, it is extremely vital that you speak with your child about this great Hour of Code event.
This is truly a chance to change the future of education in Stratford, N.J.
See http://hourofcode.com/us for details, and help spread the word.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Tracy Taylor

Creative corner is a space for students to express their creativity through art and writing.
Students can submit work to Mrs. Fusco at Yellin and Mrs. Richards to Parkview for con-
sideration to be published in the next issue of School Scoop!
Congrats to the winners of Stratford’s Holiday Contest!
Thank you to all of the participants who helped to spread cheer, positive
messages and focused on giving rather than receiving this holiday season.

If I could give any gift that I wanted to someone I would choose my parents. I would buy them a new car because they help me through school. When I get in college, I will be so smart because my mom and dad teach me new lessons every day. They work so hard and always find the time to take me and my sister everywhere we need to go. They have boring old cars, and a new car would put a smile on their faces! I love when they buy me fun things like my Kindle, so I would like to give them some-thing special. My parents are so wonderful and this gift would make them happy.
