SET Planning WHAT IS A SET PLAN?

A SET Plan is a ‘Road Map’ to assist young people in achieving their learning goals during the Senior Phase of Learning. It assists young people to examine options across education, training and employment sectors and allows them to communicate with personnel at the school who work collaboratively to achieve their goals.

SET Plan Timeline at Rochedale State High School

Year 10 - Term 1 & 2

IDP lessons - Students are exposed to a variety of activities in IDP which enables them to develop their SET Plan, SET Plans are also recorded electronically on ‘One School’ so can therefore be accessed at any time by both students and parents.

Preparing for learning in Years 11 and 12 Senior schooling is an exciting time and an important step in planning for your future. In Year 10, your school will work with you and your parents/carers to develop a plan to help you:

think about your education, training and career goals after Year 12

tailor your learning in Years 11 and 12 to your abilities, interests and ambitions

map your pathway to a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

Once your plan has been developed, your school will register you with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and will open a learning account.

The Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) The QCE is Queensland’s senior schooling qualification. It is internationally recognised and a sign of academic and personal success. The QCE is also flexible and allows you to design a pathway that’s right for you — whether you plan to:

study at university

look for skilled work

complete technical and further education (TAFE) or other training.

How does the QCE work? To receive a QCE, you must achieve 20 credits of learning, at the set standard, in a set pattern, while meeting literacy and numeracy requirements.

Typically, students will study six subjects/courses across Years 11 and 12. Many students choose to include vocational education and training (VET) courses in their QCE pathway and some may also wish to extend their learning through university courses or other recognised study. In some cases, students may start VET or other courses in Year 10.

What can I study? The QCE lets you choose from a wide range of subjects and courses. There are three categories of learning — Core, Preparatory and Complementary — and some subjects and courses are worth more credit than others. The table below lists the types of courses, their QCE category, credit values and Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) eligibility.

Vocational education and training VET is an important part of senior schooling for many students. Approximately 60% of Queensland senior students achieve VET qualifications. In recent years the most popular courses have been in business, information & communication technology (ICT), hospitality, construction, fitness, and sport and recreation.

Assessment How you will be assessed in Years 11 and 12 depends on what you study:

QCAA General subjects General subjects have three internal assessments (set and marked by schools) and one external assessment (set and marked by the QCAA). In most subjects, the external assessment contributes 25% to the final subject result. In Mathematics and Science subjects, the external assessment contributes 50%. Students in each subject will sit the external assessments at the same time in schools across Queensland.

QCAA Applied subjects Applied subjects have four internal assessments (set and marked by schools). In Essential English and Essential Mathematics, one of the assessments is a common internal assessment (set by the QCAA and marked by schools).

QCAA Short Courses Short Courses have two internal assessments (set and marked by schools).

Page 6: Student Name: IDP Class: IDP Teacher: · 2020-06-18 · This booklet is not only a paper version of your SET Plan, it is also required for your SET PLAN INTERVIEW. You will also formalise

VET VET assessment will vary, depending on the type of course. It may include observation, written assessment, questioning, work samples or third-party feedback.

Other courses Assessment in other courses will vary, depending on the course.

Access arrangements and reasonable adjustments If you have a disability, impairment and/or medical condition, or experience other circumstances that may be a barrier to your performance in assessment, you should talk to your school.

Results and reporting Your final subject results and QCE can be accessed in the Student Portal via the myQCE website in December — at the end of Year 12. You will need your 10-digit LUI to access the Student Portal.

Tertiary entrance

ATAR The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank will be used to select school leavers for tertiary entrance from 2020. It is used nationally and indicates a student’s position relative to other ATAR-eligible students.

If you intend to go to university, your school can help you plan your senior studies to meet ATAR eligibility requirements and the QCE requirements.

The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) will calculate ATARs for students at the end of Year 12. QTAC will calculate your ATAR based on your results in either:

5 General subjects, or

4 General subjects, plus one Applied subject, or THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED

4 General subjects, plus one VET qualification at Certificate III or above. THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED

To be eligible for an ATAR, you must successfully complete an English subject. In addition, the following subject combination rules apply:

only General English subjects or Applied English subjects can be included in the ATAR, but not both

only General mathematics subjects or Essential Mathematics can be included in the ATAR, but not both

if you complete the same Language subject (e.g. Chinese) as both an internally-assessed subject and a Senior External Examination, only one result can be included in your ATAR.

You will find more information on QTAC’s website: www.qtac.edu.au.

Other tertiary entrance pathways Each university has its own policies regarding school leavers without an ATAR.

If you are not eligible for an ATAR but wish to gain entry to a tertiary course, check with QTAC and/or the relevant university. Depending on the university, you may be able to gain entry with other qualifications.

Your school guidance officer can also help you understand the different tertiary entrance pathways and the best options for you.

PATHWAYS OVERVIEW

Every student, regardless of pathway, is expected to maintain progress towards the attainment of a QCE/QCIA at the end of year 12.

Success Criteria for both pathways is based upon Year 10 Academic Results. Students eligible for a Red Pathway will be informed via a letter from the Principal. Any student who has not met the 92% Attendance requirement necessary for both pathways will be allowed

provisional enrolment only and will be subject to close monitoring to ensure attendance target is met and maintained.

Red Pathway

ATAR: Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank

Prerequisites English B or above Academic Grade Point Average 3.5 or above Individual Subject Prerequisites

Criteria for success Attendance 92% or above

Description Six subjects are selected and the five ‘best’ subjects at exit will contribute to the

ATAR A minimum of five General subjects are selected, although six General subjects

are recommended as weighting and final subject grades will be dependent upon external assessments

One Applied subject OR one on-campus Certificate III Vocational Education and Training subject can contribute to the ATAR, however this combination is generally not recommended.

Off-campus certificate courses (school-based traineeships, school-based apprenticeships, and TAFE Vocational courses) CANNOT be studied on the Red Pathway without prior Principal approval.

All General subjects have external assessment held in Term 4 of Year 12 and this assessment accounts for 25% of a student’s final grade per subject – except for Maths and Science subjects, where the external assessment accounts for 50%.

Blue Pathway

Flexible Options, Workforce, TAFE, Apprenticeship, Traineeship

Criteria for success English C or above Academic Grade Point Average 3.0 or above Attendance 92% or above

Description Six subjects are selected May select up to two General subjects (meeting subject prerequisites), which may

include General English and General Mathematics Must participate in external assessment for General subjects, which contribute

25% of a student’s final grade per subject – except for Maths and Science subjects, where the external assessment accounts for 50%

Off-campus certificate courses (school-based traineeships, school-based apprenticeships, TAFE, and Certificate courses) CAN be studied on the Blue Pathway

Essential English will be compulsory for students who have not achieved a C or above in Year 10 English

*All final pathway approvals are at the discretion of the Principal

GUIDE TO ATAR

What is the ATAR?

The ATAR is the standard measure of overall school achievement used in all other Australian states and territories. It is a rank indicating a student’s position overall relative to other students.

The ATAR is expressed on a 2000-point scale from 99.95 (highest) down to 0, in increments of 0.05.

ATARs below 30 will be reported as ‘30.00 or less’.

ATAR eligibility

To be eligible for an ATAR, a student must have:

satisfactorily completed an English subject completed five general subjects, or four general subjects plus one applied subject or VET course at AQF certificate III

or above accumulated their subject results within a five-year period.

While students must satisfactorily complete an English subject to be eligible for an ATAR, the result in English will only be included in the ATAR calculation if it is one of the student’s best five subjects.

ATAR calculation

The ATAR will be calculated by combining a student’s best five subject scaled scores. Scaled scores will be derived from a student’s subject results as reported to QTAC by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA), using a process of inter-subject scaling.

Inter-subject scaling

Inter-subject scaling is where raw scores for a given subject are adjusted so the results for that subject can be compared fairly with the results of any other subject.

If a student of a given ability studies an easier Maths subject they might get a 90/100. But if the same student studied a harder Maths subject they might only get a 70/100. However, if scaling works, they should end up with the same scaled score for inclusion in their ATAR calculation.

If subjects were not scaled, students could maximise their ATAR by studying what they believe are the easiest possible subjects to get the highest possible best five subject results to comprise their ATAR.

Inter-subject scaling will not enhance or diminish a student’s performance in their subjects. The student’s ranking relative to other students in their subjects does not change. Scaling simply allows for performances to be compared across all subjects, and then only for the purposes of including these in the calculation of a student’s ATAR.

Students should choose subjects that:

they enjoy think they will achieve well in that are subject prerequisites for tertiary courses that they will be seeking entry to.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) and the ATAR

Each VET qualification level (certificate III or higher) will have a single scaled score that can be included in a student’s ATAR. For example, a Certificate III in Hospitality and a Certificate III in Laboratory

Skills will each have the same scaled score; this will be regardless of the duration or area of study of the certificate III.

It is expected that the scaled score for a completed VET diploma will be higher than that for a completed VET certificate IV, which in turn will be higher than the scaled score for a completed VET certificate III.

Choosing your subjects

Courses It is important to investigate tertiary courses NOW. Tertiary courses often have prerequisites that you must study in school.

RED Pathway Investigation:

QTAC is the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre. They receive and process applications for the majority of undergraduate programs offered by universities in Queensland.

BLUE Pathways Investigation:

RSHS offers several certificate options that are designed to give students an industry ready qualification which you can complete in your normal school timetable. You can also combine TAFE AT SCHOOL or a SAT into your timetable with the approval of the Head of Senior Schooling. To apply for these alternative options see the PATHWAYS OFFICER IN THE HUB.

See the TAFE at school course guide: https://az659834.vo.msecnd.net/eventsairaueprod/production-tafeqld-public/387cc799fe534e34bfecaf4b769667d0

VETIS FUNDING

It is important to consider how you are going to use your one off VETIS (VET in Schools) funding. You can only use you VETiS funding ONCE! Regardless of the cost of the course. For example, the Cert II in Hospitality at RSHS is either a USER PAYS cost of approximately $400 or FREE if you opt to use your VETiS funding. However, Cert II in Plumbing at TAFE is either a USER PAYS cost of approximately $7000 or FREE if you opt to use your VETiS funding. Would you rather pay for the $400 course or the $7000 course?

A full list of RSHS subjects and their eligibility for VETiS funding can be found in the year 10 subject guide on the schools website. https://rochedaleshs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/senior-school

With your goals in mind, your strengths, and your future career possibilities thought out, it is now time for you to select your success pathway and nominate your school experiences.

Prior to completing your pathway experiences, you need to ensure you understand the prerequisite requirements to study senior subjects at Rochedale State High School. You will receive this information in your Senior Secondary Subject Selection Book and it is included on the next page. Highlight the subjects you are considering studying and tick if you have met the prerequisites. If you have – you can nominate the subjects in your pathway planning.

You will also find the list of ALL subjects that can be studied at Rochedale State High School on the following page.

Complete the pathway form on the following pages.

The hardest subjects don't always equal the best education. Remember to pick subjects that are at the

right level for you, even if that means being in a different class than your friends.

Don't choose subjects because you think they will be easy; they are often boring to you and you won't do

as well as you could in a more challenging subject that you enjoy.

Your guardian should be included in the decision, but subjects should be chosen for you, not for your

parents.

Don't choose a subject only because it has a teacher you like; the teachers may change from year to year.

Just because your friends take a certain class does not mean you have to take it. Don't break under peer

pressure; choose what's best for yourself, not your friends.

Make sure you consider the prerequisites for your desired university preferences

Students applying for an Alternative Pathway program (TAFE SATS) must indicate which subject of their top 6 they will replace with an off line spare. If a student has already meet the literacy or numeracy requirements of the QCE this can be Maths or English as well.
